Doom, Heretic and Hexen: Now gibbing demons in-browser
Hey, how's it going? Having a nice day? Got a busy schedule, huh? Lots of work to do, right? We're sorry to hear that -- see, here's how we see the next week or so playing out:
[Via Rock Paper Shotgun]
- You'll fire up this recent, spot-on Flash port of Doom, Heretic and Hexen.
- You'll play them until you're about to starve to death.
- You'll eat.
- You'll repeat steps 2 and 3 until, regrettably, you forget to do step 3.

I love Hexen! Damn, that was a good game. It was the first and only game where I could transform my enemy into a pig, then freeze the pig solid, then shatter them into ice shards. Discs of Repulsion, Wings of Wrath, and of course the truly wonderful Wraithverge... ah, good times.
Thanks for the link, guys. I think I may go bask in some nostalgia.
Charlie_Six @ May 21st 2009 3:55PM
yea i'd love to see a reboot of the Hexen/Heretic games. Ah good times.

Hey, I can finally get rid of my Doom install floppies.
Funny thing is I'm only 1/2 joking, I actually did still have the floppies until like 2 years ago when I lost them in a move.
JDHexen @ May 21st 2009 3:47PM
You don't have to tell me twice =)
NaeemTHM @ May 21st 2009 3:49PM
And just like that...productivity done.
eugaet @ May 21st 2009 3:51PM
Heretic and Hexen, those were some great games (Doom as well, duh). Multiplayer Hexen was always fun, searching for the parts for your superweapon (Wraithverge, my favorite) while keeping the other player from doing the same.
Make sure you give a nod to Raven Software for Heretic and Hexen. They were the developers, id was merely the publisher.

Heh, thats pretty nifty.
15 years in the future we'll be reading about playing Crysis in a web browser.
Only we'll all complain about having to use your hands, as you would with a baby's toy.

Awesome movie reference is awesome.
Neuromancer @ May 21st 2009 3:54PM
I wonder how they're getting away with this, legally. Because they're all open source now?
Neuromancer @ May 21st 2009 3:54PM
Ah I see. Demo versions. Clever girl.
Nael M. @ May 21st 2009 5:32PM
The program executables to run those games are open source, yeah. The full game content (levels, graphics, sounds, etc.) however are still proprietary and you need to have a full copy of the game to get the open source ports to even run properly.
Neuromancer @ May 21st 2009 8:27PM
Yeah I know. Well I'm really not sure what all the fuss is about then. If somehow you could legally play the full game online in a browser, that'd be something.

Dave Bowman: All right, HAL; I'll go in through the emergency airlock.
HAL: Without your space helmet, Dave, you're going to find that rather difficult.
Dave Bowman: HAL, I won't argue with you anymore! Open the doors!
HAL: Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.

Goodbye productivity. We had a good run. I'll see you next week? No... probably not.

I still have my Heretic CD right here in front of me. No cover though....

Too bad Internet usage is very restricted with New York State Dept of Health jobs. Misuse of the Internet is one of the only ways you can get fired without involving drugs or violence.
I'm super bored right now too. Must be why I'm so addicted to Joystiq on my phone.

You're bored? I just played with my tea for 8 minutes! That's how bored I am. Do you know how you play with tea? You stir it. Then you watch it and see if it or the reflection cast does anything interesting. Then you stir it some more.
I want to go home and play L4D or WoW dammit!
Mike @ May 21st 2009 6:38PM
Oh MANNN! These games ruled my childhood.
SonicRift @ May 21st 2009 8:24PM
And for the man whose work computer is without real internet access or permission to run outside software, can I save this as an SWF or something to plug into my web browser?
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ May 21st 2009 8:34PM
My Childhood vidjagaems in a web browser, cool.
