It seems like Sony's been talking -- surely thinking -- about a PSP music download service for years now. There was, of course, a survey in January that queried consumer interest in such a feature. The most surprising implication about the latest rumor that Sony has discussed the possibility of music downloads for PSP with other major recording companies (Sony itself being one of four big labels) is that CNET, whose anonymous sources are credited for the report, has dubbed the meeting of the music moguls as "only preliminary."
We suppose that Sony is really taking its time to get it right ... for the next one. Perhaps a digital music store is meant for the "PSP Go!" wish list? While we're at it, let's add phone capabilities and a touch screen, too. Oh, wait a minute ...

Was coming in here to say the same thing. That picture is hilarious in an absurd kind of way. She looks like she is visualizing herself as a tree swaying in the wind or some linens on the clothes line in moms back yard. I wish my PSP made me feel that overcome with joy.

She probably got a shock from pulling it in and out of her pocket too fast. (aka recent iphone story) Note the hand gesture!

If the fabled PSP Go is smaller and more compact, I'm totally behind this. However as it is now, the PSP is a monster I would NEVER want to carry around for music purposes.
But beyond the size, it's also far to delicate to throw in your backpack. I purchased my PSP on release day and dropped it like a spaz on the second day. The damn UMD drive stopped reading disc. I dropped it...on a carpeted floor mind you.

that's funny because I've dropped my psp onto hardwood floors, tiles, and carpets yet it has still survived to this day... its a ta-88 model and only has a few light scratches on the silver circle on the back... I don't know why but every time I dropped it (which was on accident of course) the umd drive sorta popped open to break its fall lol. Sorry for your misfortune XD.
I've been waiting to get a 3k model but I'm waiting to see if anything like the Go! is announced at e3 first. Downloable music on the psp would be pretty cool.

I'm sure I was just unlucky. The worst part was that Sony initially wanted me to pay 80 bucks for the repairs, even though it was under warranty. I had to fight to get the thing fixed for free. What a hassle.
Anyway, I've held out on buying a new PSP for the last 5 years because I've been anxiously waiting for PSP2. Hopefully they'll deliver this E3.

The 3000 series is the bees knees. I upgraded from a phatty launch model and have played more PSP in 6 monts than the previous two years. I'm not sure how much different it is than the 2000 series but compared to the 1000 series it's a revolution.
A PSP Go would be really cool especially if their intention is to have it priced lower than the DSi. Imagine if they could price the thing around $100 msrp! The thing would be flying off the shelves. I like the thought of an even more compact and portable PSP that had similar functions but removed unnecessary items. If it had on board HDD space that would be great but I could even do without that so long as there are expandable slots (memory stick is fine with me).
I told my friend the other day about this UMD less PSP and he thought it was a bad idea because a lot of people won't have access to the psn. That's understandable but the thing is this is geared towards people who want a more portable device without having to carry around UMD's. It's not like all the PSP's with UMDs are going to suddenly stop working. I would imagine most games would still be sold in UMD at retail, as well. Maybe they could do kiosk in certain stores.
I think this PSP Go is sort of Sony's counter to the Zune X which is really just a Zune that plays XBLA games. If this PSP Go has access to a music store, the PSN video store, downloadable games and the slight chance that it's a phone I'll dump my iPhone in a heartbeat. Even if it's not a phone I'll probably still pick one up for the portability factor.

Whatever they're thinking of doing, they should scrap it immediately and just team up with Amazon. It'll be the easiest on everyone involved, and it'll make for the first Extra Internet Button on the PSP menu that isn't completely pointless. That's just my two cents, though.

I think this is a waste of time and a fool's errand. The PSP is a mediocre music-listening device; that headphone jack causing the cord to jut out of the side is the whole experience in a nutshell.
If a new PSP is announced, I'm sure more hardware issues like that one will be addressed, and I'm sure a store is imminent - but there's a glut of music stores and music needs management software... Not something Sony has handled well in the past.
I don't know. I'd rather they just focus on nimble PSP audio playback and let the masses use iTunes or Amazon for acquisition of music. Or the old-fashioned 'rip my own CDs' method. Or just forget it; my iPod or iPhone handles the music, you handle the games.

Why in the world do they have to use white headphones? Is it to resemble the crappy Ipod ones? Come on Sony, be original and use some Sony Studio headphones!

I don't need a music store, I still prefer physical media and I can burn and put whatever music I want on my PSP in a variety of fomats- but if it makes them more money and others go for it, I think it's a great idea. More money for Sony means more development for better features and software, which can only mean good things...
The LAST thing I want on my PSP is a touch-screen, though. Why not add a waggle mechanic while they're at it? :(

It's great idea but not with the current PSP model. For people to use the PSP as a MP3 they'll have to make it a tad smaller, change the headphone jack, bundle it with better headphones and at least double the volume capacity.

I have been downloading music on the PSP for years and use its internet radio a lot. Also use its RSS for music.

I too use my PSP as an mp3 player. I love the internet radio function too. I hope Sony can get this downloadable music service to work. I'll certainly use it. Lord knows I don't use my PSP as a game player because of that one fucking joystick!! I wanna kick Sony in the balls for that decision.

If they do a music download service, I'd rather they just link themselves to a non-iTunes established service (preferably Amazon.com) so they don't even have to think about a library or setup.

Stop Sony...just...stop.
I tried using this as an MP3 player. You know the problem with it as one? Its friggin' huge. Not to mention iTunes and Zune both have much better interfaces with their MP3 players compared to this.

I think you aren't putting all the pieces together on this thing. The rumored smaller form factor PSP GO and this rumor about a music store as well as a game rental service via PSN all point to a new more media centric and portable version of the PSP. I'm sure current PSP owners will be able to use this music store if it come sinto fruition but I have no doubt the timing of all of this means it's geared towards the new device that will probably be unveiled at E3 here in a few weeks.

If the PSP gets a slide-screen, then it can automatically become smaller in width because the control would be behind the screen when closed. And the size of the PSP screen now, if pretty good. It's 4.3in compared to the iPod Touch's 3.5, which isn't terrible. Still music store, PSN, and maybe a PSP version of home wouldn't be that bad xD. Hoping for the best.
