update in
Team Fortress 2's continuing
Spy vs. Sniper saga reveals the Sniper brandishing his liquid gold as a weapon. A thrown jar of "Jarate" on an opponent will increase damage by 35 percent (poor Heavy) and can disable the Spy's cloaking device. If it's used on a teammate (eww!), it'll put out fires and jellyfish stings ... if there were jellyfish in the game.
We may not be playing
Team Fortress 2 that much anymore, but we're more than happy to let Valve keep chronicling the exploits of the well-developed
TF2 cast.

Except you have to unlock the item through achievements. If you haven't played the Sniper at all, it'll be a long road to completing the achievements :P

It seems they've gotten rid of that whole achievements -> unlocks aspect.
Even then, there are achievement servers for a reason.

I kid. Personally though, I see this game lasting me till at least a couple months after their f'real last update. I mean, I love TF2 enough to still play it on its slightly retarded cousin's version (Xbox) every now and then.

Yeah, I go through periods of time where I don't play the game, then they come out with an update and I get sucked back in. Lately, I've played hardly anything other than TF2 though.
This update and the scout's seem to have come really close together, so that's probably another reason why I'm still interested.

If you're bored with the game... I can understand. Its happened to me a few times... but I've always returned for more. Heres kinda my process:
1. Update released!
2. Play hardcore strait-edge official Valve map servers. EM ELL GEEEEE.
3. Kinda get bored... start to HLSS more often. Get angry at teammates for loosing.
4. Switch to auxilary servers (IE. Dodgeball maps, custom levels, non-srs-bsns)
5. Rage quit more often
6. Realize I need to play more L4D, beat Beyond Good & Evil, etc.
7. No TF2!
8. Go to Step 1

I don't do that for classes that I actually enjoy playing. I might do it for the Sniper. Not for the Spy though. Spy is my favorite class, along with the Medic.
And I didn't play the Heavy at all before the patch and in about 4 or 5 hours of gameplay, in legitimate servers mind you, I unlocked two of the weapons, so if they scale it correctly, it shouldn't take that long.
Also, based on the number of achievements that seem to involve Jarate, that will likely be the first unlock, which is the most important unlock for me. :P

I think that's the wrong strategy. If they release end of '09 or in 2010, the community will be long gone. It has to come out soon or it's likely that it'll never come out at all.

Question:
If it can be used to douse your teamates, then will they get the 35% damage taken increase? cause I see a lot of FF in the future.
