Urine for a treat as TF2's Sniper practices 'jarate'
We've met the Sniper before, but now we learn what he actually does with all those jars of urine. The latest update in Team Fortress 2's continuing Spy vs. Sniper saga reveals the Sniper brandishing his liquid gold as a weapon. A thrown jar of "Jarate" on an opponent will increase damage by 35 percent (poor Heavy) and can disable the Spy's cloaking device. If it's used on a teammate (eww!), it'll put out fires and jellyfish stings ... if there were jellyfish in the game.
We may not be playing Team Fortress 2 that much anymore, but we're more than happy to let Valve keep chronicling the exploits of the well-developed TF2 cast.
[Thanks, Anthony]

Wait, wasn't this an April Fool's joke?
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/sniper-getting-next-tf2-class-update-still-working-on-360-updat/
So it's actually coming? Awesome!
Temidien @ May 21st 2009 10:08AM
Brilliant.
AsherR @ May 21st 2009 10:11AM
Sniper is easily my least played class. Perhaps that has to change now...
Greatest addition to a game. EVAR.
jynxycat @ May 21st 2009 10:56AM
Except you have to unlock the item through achievements. If you haven't played the Sniper at all, it'll be a long road to completing the achievements :P
Godstine @ May 21st 2009 10:58AM
It seems they've gotten rid of that whole achievements -> unlocks aspect.
Even then, there are achievement servers for a reason.

HighFiveJesus @ May 21st 2009 10:34AM
I have been shown who is the boss!
MrSpaceCowboy @ May 21st 2009 10:41AM
Who does that Sniper think he is?
R. Kelly?!
Derick @ May 21st 2009 11:10AM
Well, when you're standing around waiting for a target to expose their weak spot for massive damage, you don't have time for a bathroom break...
zero2dash @ May 21st 2009 4:01PM
THAT PISS WAS DIGITAL!
bamb0o-stick @ May 21st 2009 10:47AM
Nothing shows love for your teammates than putting them out with a big glass of Aussie juice.
Gemini Ace @ May 21st 2009 10:51AM
Enough with these stupid updates!
grover96 @ May 21st 2009 11:04AM
Are you just trying to get voted down?
ZaxCG2 @ May 21st 2009 12:54PM
YES. STUPID UPDATES. Why would Valve keep doing this to us...?! And what the CRAP do they think they're doing releasing them for FREE? THE NERVE.
Captain Planet @ May 21st 2009 10:55AM
You think he eats a lot of asparagus?
jynxycat @ May 21st 2009 10:57AM
This weekend will be FULL of sniper/spies, what with the updates AND the free TF2 offer.
It's a good day to be a Pyro.
Godstine @ May 21st 2009 11:00AM
Not gonna lie, I'm a whole lot excited. I wonder how the new spy watches work against my backburner?
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ May 21st 2009 12:29PM
I hope they are plenty of pyros I plan to Jarate my team mates into a non-on fire state.
BigD145 @ May 21st 2009 10:57AM
What, no Vodka?
Godstine @ May 21st 2009 10:58AM
'We may not be playing Team Fortress 2 that much anymore'
For shame, Joystiq. For shame.
Kizzle @ May 21st 2009 11:03AM
I also lost interest. No game is immune to this.
Godstine @ May 21st 2009 11:10AM
For shame, Kizzle. For shame.
I kid. Personally though, I see this game lasting me till at least a couple months after their f'real last update. I mean, I love TF2 enough to still play it on its slightly retarded cousin's version (Xbox) every now and then.
AsherR @ May 21st 2009 11:15AM
Yeah, I go through periods of time where I don't play the game, then they come out with an update and I get sucked back in. Lately, I've played hardly anything other than TF2 though.
This update and the scout's seem to have come really close together, so that's probably another reason why I'm still interested.
ZaxCG2 @ May 21st 2009 1:00PM
If you're bored with the game... I can understand. Its happened to me a few times... but I've always returned for more. Heres kinda my process:
1. Update released!
2. Play hardcore strait-edge official Valve map servers. EM ELL GEEEEE.
3. Kinda get bored... start to HLSS more often. Get angry at teammates for loosing.
4. Switch to auxilary servers (IE. Dodgeball maps, custom levels, non-srs-bsns)
5. Rage quit more often
6. Realize I need to play more L4D, beat Beyond Good & Evil, etc.
7. No TF2!
8. Go to Step 1
David @ May 21st 2009 11:00AM
I am playing this game more than ever..
AsherR @ May 21st 2009 11:01AM
Or an hour or two on an achievement map.
I don't do that for classes that I actually enjoy playing. I might do it for the Sniper. Not for the Spy though. Spy is my favorite class, along with the Medic.
And I didn't play the Heavy at all before the patch and in about 4 or 5 hours of gameplay, in legitimate servers mind you, I unlocked two of the weapons, so if they scale it correctly, it shouldn't take that long.
Also, based on the number of achievements that seem to involve Jarate, that will likely be the first unlock, which is the most important unlock for me. :P
AsherR @ May 21st 2009 11:02AM
Ugh, replying fail....
Einhanderkiller @ May 21st 2009 11:09AM
There will be an alternative method to unlocking weapons.
AsherR @ May 21st 2009 11:11AM
Oh really? I hadn't heard if that was going to implemented yet.
That will be pretty sweet then.
Wizzleteets @ May 21st 2009 11:03AM
I figure I'm entitled to one stupid question a month: Do these updates apply to the 360 version of the game too?
Zertoss @ May 21st 2009 11:07AM
Nope. I think they're planning on releasing all of the character updates in one big pack for XBL.
Wizzleteets @ May 21st 2009 11:24AM
Thank you, good sir!
cloud858rk @ May 21st 2009 6:01PM
I think that's the wrong strategy. If they release end of '09 or in 2010, the community will be long gone. It has to come out soon or it's likely that it'll never come out at all.
grover96 @ May 21st 2009 11:07AM
Heavys drink vodka, snipers drink Fosters. Silly rabbit!
XLM @ May 21st 2009 11:37AM
Actually he would most likely drink Victoria Bitter or Fourex.
Foster's is already piss, so there is no sense in drinking it.
Gemini Ace @ May 21st 2009 11:07AM
Maybe.

I played TFC until TF2 was released.
I plan on playing TF2 until the next one is out.
Longevity baby.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ May 21st 2009 12:22PM
This should piss off some spies but is better to be piss off than piss on.
(Hooray my new pc can run TF2 in high settings!!)
ZaxCG2 @ May 21st 2009 1:01PM
Yo dawg, I heard you liked piss.
rTwelve @ May 21st 2009 1:33PM
so we scheduled an appointment with the shrink, because that's effing disgusting
Poisoned Al @ May 21st 2009 12:30PM
The usefulness of this new weapon will depend on it's splash damage.
grover96 @ May 21st 2009 1:08PM
Jarate will show spys for what they truely are...yellow!
Doug @ May 21st 2009 5:36PM
Question:
If it can be used to douse your teamates, then will they get the 35% damage taken increase? cause I see a lot of FF in the future.
Sniper: "Why didn't you heal me you piece of shit medic"
Medic: "Screw you, I was helping my friend"
Sniper: *throws jar of urine on medic*
Billin @ May 21st 2009 8:13PM
I wonder what the reload animation on jarate will look like...?
