Just wait until next week when the big releases start rolling out. Those new games will be selling like....used games...?

They already are selling used games just like... new games. I bought Punch-Out!! there yesterday. The infamous open box with a "new" sticker swindle. I'm pretty sure it's the last thing I ever buy from them unless they have an amzing exclusive on something.

Disclaimer: The only reason I went there in the first place is that I had a gift card.

Also of interest: They tried to push some lame ass green Punch-Out!! controller gloves with the game telling me how much better it makes the game. Please.

Two reasons "new" games sales are down this quarter vs. the same quarter last year:

GTAIV
Mario Kart Wii

Both were released this quarter last year.

Also less money for consumer spending, means pawned games 5 dollar off price attractive.

I love the display hanging from the ceiling. "New games, used." That pretty much sums 'em up.

Especially with their AWESOME employee check out system. With their sophisticated shrink-wrapping techniques, you'll never know it was played!

Prepare for the onslaught of Gamestop hate.

hail2dking: You're right. This has been a very lackluster quarter for gaming. Not hard to see why new game sales would be down.

I only buy used games at Game Stop if they are $10 or less. I'm not buying a used copy of game that's been out for over a year for a mere $2 less.

I will only buy a used game from Gamestop if I can't find it anywhere else new or used.

Part of the problem is that Publishers need to continue to maintain an avaialble level of old releases marked to lower prices but sold as new...You can go get movies that were made 50 years ago but you can't get most less successful games that were made even 2 years ago.

The publishers could make some more money by rereleasing older games as new at a fair price. And I could fill out my game collection easier than ebay.

I just stopped in today, and I'm baffled by their pricing practice. Some "new' games are only 3 to 4 dollars more then the "used" games.

Why the hell would you buy used? Roughly 3 bucks more and u get a new one. The "gap" (or lack of one) needs to be greater between used/new games.

Doesn't matter because half the time when you buy new, they've already opened the box and taken your game out. It may as well be used at that point.

When does this happen? Unless you're looking for used versions of games that are new enough to buy new in the first place. I've never payed more than $35, and that was back in the GameCube days

So that's, what, about $2 billion a year that never makes it to _any_ of the people involved in making the games?

I'm all for used game sales, don't get me wrong. But I can't help but feel like GS is taking advantage of the entire industry, let alone consumers.

Hell yeah, I wanna pay an extra $2,000 to GM when I bought my used Chevy Impala. That would make a hell of a lot of sense, right?

Well that would work if GM owned all of the dealerships that bought and sold their vehicles (which would include used). Which really doesn't seem too far fetched. Although I know little to nothing about the car sales market other than it's broken.

If that was the case, then every game publisher would own a retail store and sell their games. Unless they do that, they can shut up about used game sales. You already made your sale, quit whining for more.

I am so sick of the used car analogy.

Used car sellers don't sell new cars right along side the used ones. They don't buy part of their stock from the manufacturers. They don't have the chance to push used car sales over brand new inventory. Even if they did, you bet your ass they'd give you more than a 10% discount on a used car.

The biggest issue is that retail used game sales are controlled by the same company that provides one of the largest retail source of new games. You don't see that very often when dealing with other new and used commodities.

I won't buy new or used there, unless it's some cheap game for under $15. Anyways, you can always end up paying more for used games there then getting the same game new on the net (buy.com, newegg or amazon).

Everyone should boycott Gamestop until they sell the used games for much less. You buy a game for $60, don't like it, return it same day, you are lucky to get $20 for it. Then they put it back on the shelf for $55 and push it hardcore to the next person that comes in for a copy of that game.

The last time I was there, I was buying a game for my nephew, had to get it right there. The employee there went on for 10 minutes about how I should get the used copy.

I think it hurts us in the long run to buy the used games there, do yourself a favor, sell them on ebay, buy new online.

What bothers me more about Gamestop isn't that they buy and sell used games, it's how obnoxious their 'sales associates' can be about it.

When you see me coming into your store with empty hands, why do you ask me if I have any trade-ins? Do you think I have games stuffed down my pants?

Video-game retailer GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) is seeing quite a sell-off in the wake of its first-quarter earnings report. This morning, GME reported net income of $70.4 million, or 42 cents per share, topping year-ago results by a nickel per share and beating analysts' estimates by a penny. Sales were on the upswing as well, gaining 9% to $1.98 billion to match Street expectations (same-store sales dropped 1.5%).

While all seemed fairly well and good for this reporting period, the future isn't quite so bright. Company officials project per-share earnings of 28 to 33 cents, falling considerably shy of the 40 cents expected by analysts. What's more, same-store sales are now projected to drop between 8% and 11%.
