Microsoft has been caught using misleading images to promote the power of DirectX 10. Digg user, LtGenPanda, has spotted a Games for Windows Live DirectX 10 product page featuring the dubious marketing images. In order to easily characterize the power of DirectX 10 versus previous versions, Microsoft compared pre-release rendered screens of 2007's Crysis (using DX10) against the 2003 PC release of Halo: Combat Evolved (running DX9). Considering Crysis can also be played using DirectX 9 (albeit at lower quality), we call shenanigans!
If the misleading images weren't enough, Microsoft adds some choice words to spin its web of deceit. In regards to the OMGness of DX10, the page reads: "The facial expressions, details of the face, the handle-bar moustache and the glazed looking eyes all add to the realism." Kids, the harsh truth is that handle-bar mustaches will only lead to a loss of friends and respect.

Bruce Wayne and Adam Smith will be fascinated to hear of this new theory of how competition reduces sales but increases buyer choice. Please forward it to my secretary, Pepper.

I'm pretty sure the Xbox uses directx 8, so if the PC version needed direct x 9 then it would've been in the same way that Halo 2 needed direct x 10. This is dumb.

I disagree, just look at the detail on Captain Keyes wrinkly old man forehead in the bottom right. Surely that's more respect and friend earning than a handlebar mustache

I get the "Halloween documents" even though they are years old. But WTF on The Ultimate Steal? Thats them selling Office dirt cheap to students, who also happen to be really big pirates of Office. Pretty good deal in my book (I did pick it up 2 years ago)

Well those same students could just as well download free OpenOffice.org that does anything you should need as a student. I do all my papers, presentations, calculations and so forth with that and I don't have to pay a 60$ license and also ODF support/PDF export acually works with OO.org.

Notice it says that crysis is coming out soon. Meaning this was from before Crysis was released (2007)
Don't know why that guy got dugg all the way to the top of Digg for that, it was posted on Reddit over a year ago. Which I assume is a repost from both sites which were probably posted originally the same day that add was put on microsofts site.
That being said, lol@microsoft that was a sad ad.

@Reader Yeah you;re right. it's all BS, after all it's just all over the net on various websites. Oh and because I only have one post I guess that means I must be lying. So just don't try it, it won't hurt you either way. It's fairly new and i just linked to the first site that popped up. All the comments on that site are from when it first came out. And like most things it's pretty buggy. I've been using DX10 on my XP machine for about 2 months now and I have only had problems with Hellgate: London. It just wont load DX10 mode. So like i said, don't try it. Because I don't really care if you do or not.

Correct me if I am wrong about this, but when Half Life 2 came out in 2004, I think Valve did this exact same comparison thing with HL1 and HL2. They were showing the differences between the V2 of the Source Engine, and V1 of the Source Engine as well as showing pictures of HL1 and HL2's textures and lighting and pointing out the differences between them. Higher textures, HLR, dynamic lighting, etc. Just like what MS is doing here.
So, to wit: a developer shows off two different versions of an API/ENGINE, and the differences between them. But the HL2 source engne was an upgrade to the HL1 source engine (just like DX10 is an upgrade to DX9), but still the same base of code. What you see in that article is the same thing. Of course the newer version is going to have improved features.
Xav, I think you're reaching.

The difference is that a low-level graphics API is not a game engine. DirectX 10 does not (I hope) make shadows or fancy shafts of light happen.

I remember going to a Microsoft Software Developers Conference where they showed this exact demo. That was two years ago, and they're still using the same propaganda!

When the marketing department markets development tools to end users, they ALWAYS come up with irritating bullshit that does nothing but confuse /them/, anger geeks who need to correct everyone, and indirectly attack whatever development tool they happen to be attacking. They probably thought they were telling the truth with this one, too.
(Still waiting for the other 994 new APIs Apple claims to have for iPhone 3.0).

I cry foul Xav, the only way to earn respect is to grow a mustache and a handle bar mustache earns double respect. answer me this, would you mess with a guy who had a handle bar mustache, i know I wouldn't
