Heavy Rain footage surprisingly light on precipitation
89
The fine folks at 1UP managed to secure some face time with Heavy Rain game director David Cage and picked his brain on the upcoming title from Quantic Dream. Cage talked about the game's four main characters, and how they can each actually die in the game, and how such a catastrophe would affect the other playable characters. They talk about other things as well, but the thing to point out here is the plethora of gameplay footage, which we know is really what you're after. It's okay, feel free to use us for our embedded video past the break. We'll just be in the corner, crying, while you enjoy the gameplay.

This looks great, I'm considering getting a PS3 just for this.

Really? I think that after the initial screens, this bunch is a bit of a let down.
Indigo Prophecy (or Fahrenheit for my non-US buddies) was a decent game, but I'm not sure I would use that as an indicator that Heavy Rain is must-buy yet.

I'm liking the cinematic look and the non linear progression, apparently this fight can be avoided entirely and characters can die but the game will continue.

IDK what ur taking about, i LOVED Indigo Prophecy just because of how original it was. I didn't mind the way combat was handled, and overall IP is one of my favorite PS2 games. I can't wait for this game :)

With his mention of how scenes are so easy to produce now that they have the framework in place, I'm hoping that they will put together a lot of episodic DLC. I've been waiting for this game ever since they first put together the audition demo and that would be awesome if like every couple of months you could DL a new plot line to play through.

He didn't necessarily say they tried to be revolutionary gameplay-wise, he said that they tried to be different. Which I can honestly agree, all of these games were a breath of fresh air. Katamari damacy came up with a new control system and introduced a fresh new game type unlike something we had played before... Well at least in America! Ico when it first came out, showed the power of the ps3, it was an engaging experience and invoked emotion from the player. Plus it was sort of like a co-op single player game, it felt as if you truly had a partner and were caring for her. Shadow of the Colossus was a masterpiece, it's story was almost nonexistent. All you knew were the terms of which to gain your love back and that was good enough for most players. You knew you had to fight, you knew why you had to fight, but you didn't know if it was the right choice. It also conveyed a sense of an underdog triumph. Flower is also a breath of fresh air, not only are you using the six axis controls to play but it is an artistic masterpiece. You were restoring life to these areas affected by human life, pollution, etc.
I could go on and on about some of these titles, specifically Shadow of the Colossus but I digress.

Watch this in HD (over GameTrailers) before you say it looks worse than it was shown last year.

wow, after all the hype I heard about this... this is extremely underwhelming. It reminds me of Power Rangers for the Sega CD.. it might as well just be a movie. from what I can tell from the video at least it's just a linear ass quick time event. with a little (hopefully) exploration. doesn't look fun at all. I'll give it a shot later, but damn, talk about a let down (graphics wise too, compared to what they showed before, bleh)
Posted: May 22nd 2009 11:40AM (Unverified) said
lol yeah. dragon slayer!!!! or those interactive porn DVDs :P The graphics look dumb...not that realistic as expected... i mean they look great but doesnt look like the high res images of the "game" we saw a year ago.
Mocap??? they move like ragdolls... im too disapointed where this game is going... just release it and shelve it next to haze.

You my good sir Jeses, are an idiot. I could go on and on defending this title, but alas you are entitled to an opinion. Hah, even saying it deserves to be thrown aside like Haze how little you seem to understand the game. I can only assume you've never played Indigo Prophecy, and in no way am I saying you should go out an play it. For it would be a waste of your time, because a simpleton such as yourself would find it complicating to play such a game. In fact you probably have a hard enough time posting a comment on joystiq... So good day sir!

Haze was bad, fullstop, even looking at this in a trailer I can tell its better then Haze, to even use haze and this in the same sentence is an insult

Heavy Rain looks very exciting. But I think this guy is perhaps a little self-satisfied. Across the board people gave GTA IV acclaim for it's mature and engaging story. Same can be said of MGS 4. Heavy Rain has a lot to live up to if it believes it's story can be as interesting and as entertaining as those two games.

Looks good. Keep in mind to all you people complaining...it's still in development...of course the graphics aren't going to be perfect. God it seems like people just like to whine and don't even think about what they're saying.
This game looks like it has a lot of potential and could definitely have a good story, btw the guy answered the question that he avoided about the game being about a father later on in the interview basically, when the guy asked something about personal experience, and the developer said he does base it off of personal experience, and that he's a father of 2 children and it changes your life. So basically, he accidentally answered the first question O.O

I'm excited! The game looks like it revolves very heavily around an interesting story. The game looks like a new and different idea for a game. Good stories & new ideas are so rare this gen... instead we get COD in a new wrapper ever year and a new Guitar Hero every month. We need developers to try new interesting things!

They have been doing these kind of games since Dragon's Lair...

Dragon's Lair had a joystick and one button, all you did was press that button in certain circumstances. That game is nowhere near as complex as Heavy Rain, gameplay-wise or story-wise. Honestly don't try to downplay something, just because similar attempts have been made before.

Well one could say that in this generation, it is a breath of fresh air. I mean truthfully, there haven't been many games like Heavy Rain in a bit of time. With reference to Dragon's Lair coming out in 1983 and some titles I'm not familiar with coming out in the 1990's, we haven't seen much this decade.

That was my point. There aren't game like this flooding the market. Most game nowadays have a half arsed story that is less than 10 hours long. I'm a little skeptical of laying a game composed mostly of QTE myself also, but if the story and character hold up, I think it can be awesome.
Also the fact that the character can die and the story shifts focus to someone else, is a very revolutionary ambitious idea. This offers an insane amount of replay, to see all of the different story paths.

I see what your getting at Kdiggy, but I feel that the story will be the star of the game. Gameplay is not as important to the creator's I believe, of course many gamers are turned off by the QTE's but I believe that this is the only way the game could have been done. Judging by the first game, the gameplay would have suffered if not done in QTE. For somethings look as if they could only happen in QTE or a cutscene. All in all, a QTE is more fun than just watching plain old cutscenes.
As seen by my other comments, I shall defend this game with all my might!

the point is: they don't make games like this anymore, at least not with high production values like this one.
back in the days you had Steven Spielberg involved with The Dig, Tim Schaffer writing Grim Fandango and stuff like that, these games were amazing and they had barely any action sequences, they are still fun to play, and acted as interactive storybooks/films. This is the only thing i expect from Heavy Rain.
and i'm not disappointed in the least with what i've saw and heard today.

Anyone who is complaining about the gameplay being a let down must have never played indigo prophecy! Because if you played Indigo Prophecy, you would realize that the gameplay for that game and Heavy Rain will be awesome. I honestly have no idea how someone can be excited for a spiritual successor to a game, when they've never played that game?
I mean god, you should have watched some gameplay vids of Indigo Prophecy and then you would have gotten the gist of what will be going on in Heavy Rain.
I for one, am very excited!

I'm an adult and Indigo Prophecy sucked. The gameplay was Simon Says w/ analog sticks, and the story jumped the shark.
On the plus side, Cage has said he listened to people's complaints and the story is much more grounded in reality than Indigo, and this gameplay footage seems like the actions you can do in the game pertain to what happens in the screen a lot more than "okay, both analog sticks left....NOW!" and your dude does a cartwheel kick. So I'm looking forward to this.

As an adult gamer the story and concept appeals to me. As someone that plays games, the QTE's ruined it for me. I know they were going for a cinematic feel but QTE's are so over used now I feel it takes me out of the game. Considering you only have 4 playable characters, one bad QTE can kill one of them and you're stuck with the consequences of bad hand/eye coordination. That kind of ticks me off a bit.
