Before they were tentacle-headed mutant monstrosities, zombies in the Resident Evil series were simply zombies. They had no fanatic tendencies, nor zealous leader -- only a penchant for devouring brains and mindlessly shambling. It was a simpler time -- and as some would argue, a better time.
If you're looking to relive this golden undead era, but lack the proper disc-based media to do so, we've got great news -- as hinted at by a recent ESRB rating, Resident Evil: Director's Cut is coming to the PSN on May 28 (otherwise known as next Thursday) for $9.99. We can't wait -- though we wish it had support for trophies. We like to consider ourselves the master of unlocking trophies. (We feel dirty.)

I see this and think, "Yeah, I want that."
I see the price tag and think, "Well, maybe not."
I consider the fact that it's essentially buying the game for two of my systems and think "Yeah, okay. Maybe I want this after all."
I look at my game rack and see it already and think, "Wait... I already have this."
I contemplate why I'm even posting and think, "Fuck this, back to Demigod."

This is cool! It would be great to have a virtual collection of these on my PS3 HDD to play every once in a while. I'm really looking forward to them re-releasing RE2 which was my favorite of the ones on the PS1. I have the remade version of RE1 from the Gamecube release and still play it on the Wii from time to time. I'm glad that PSN is getting more quality classics on there. They need to release more old school RPGs though. Bring on FFVII and the Suikoden games!! I'd like to have the Lunar games on there as well!

...why aren't they putting up the re-done version from the Gamecube?
At the very least they could use the updated art assets.

Sony had nothing to do with that remake, and they don't hold any sort of rights to it.

And no one has bothered to ask if the opening FMV will be uncut?
Posted: May 23rd 2009 2:21PM (Unverified) said
Well it was re-released twice as a DC in North America and the FMV never was actually the uncut version

Yes, that's what I want to know. It was supposed to be an uncut directors version in the states and was censored so we didn't get the extra footage. So what exactly are we going to get?

One of my all time favs! Great news. I admit that the GameCube version is superior, but the PS version isn't bad at all. Still waiting for FF VII though!!
EU people - just create a US account if you are interested in the game. I created a EU one for the KZ2 demo. It's a pretty quick and painless process. That way you can enjoy the best of what both stores offer. Ideally it would be nice if our stores were identical, but there is a very easy around that.

Except that only works for demos. To *buy* stuff off of other stores, you need to have a billing address (credit card) in the region you are buying from or obtain a PSN card from that region. You can buy US or JP cards on ebay for instance.

Why not release Resident Evil the Gamecube version on PSN? We can finally have the game in HD for prosperity sake.

Probably because Resident Evil for the GC is not a PS1 classic?

Makes it, what, the second or third time this was re-released in some form this gen?
Posted: May 24th 2009 11:16AM (Unverified) said
There was that RE on DS, and the gamecube RE was rereleased on Wii; so yeah, this is the third time this generation you've had a chance to play Resident Evil. Last gen, it was rereleased on GameCube, of course. And then when it was released, it had three separate PlayStation versions, plus it was ported to Saturn and PC. So that's at least nine different ways to play one game by now.
yay.

I have a question about these PSN classic:
Do they follow your PSN account, and playable on both PSP and PS3?

I wish capcom wouldn't try to nickel and dime you out of every DLC they release. First they make you pay $5.99 for RE5 Versus mode which is something they could've just added for free. Then for Street Fighter IV you pay $3.99 for each of the alternate costume packs. Now this game is $10 which is more than the average PS1 game on the PSN. I guess this is what game companies have to do nowadays to make more profit.

I think trophy support on PS1 classics would be awesome. Symphony of the Night on 360 has achievements, so its not impossible. But, I'm sure they would start charging more for them, since adding new code to a game would take a bit longer than just making a disc image and adding some DRM to the file.

You can take that chance with new games, for older ones, unless they belong to Sony (which RE isn't) it's just more of a chore, not only that, an expensive one at that, and unlike new games, theres less gaurantee anyone will buy the game in hordes and those that do are probably not going to bother trying to get all the trophies, I know I wouldn't bother, but then I can't speak for everyone. Though, I'm sure thats what they would be thinking.

It's good that we're getting a few more quality games to come out of this program as opposed to a lot of the junk we've been getting. I'm not interested personally because I prefer the GC REmake, but it's good that it's out there. Hopefully RE2 will come along as well as there hasn't been an updated version of that and it really does sound like the best of the PS series.
The graphics though... let's face it they were bad when it came out. That whole generation was marred by terrible graphics as companies rushed to make games in 3D when the technology could just barely handle it and we ended up with a lot of very ugly games. NES games and SNES/Genesis era games often come out looking very good and being very playable, but the desire to do 3D generally hurt things. I'm glad I skipped it and stuck to PC gaming for that period. II find that looking back I missed very little (well, I had friends with Smash Bros.... have to get in my 20 hours a week on that) and most of the better games have ended up being remade with graphics that actually manage to hold up (Tomb Raider: Legend, The Twin Snakes, RE on the GC). Sure they'll look a bit dated, but they at least pass minimum standards for quality.
As for the price SOTN was $10 on PSN because it was also released for $10 on the XBox. As others have stated it was a Konami game, not a first-party Sony-owned title so they got to set the pricing and it was set to be even across platforms. It felt a bit like being gouged, but compared to the price to buy it used it's worth it. I still can't believe that some of these games that went to Greatest Hits and sold tons and tons of copies to just about everyone still regularly fetch $40-50 on eBay even for the GH versions. Putting them out for download is a great option that lets them remain available to people who want to play them, not collect them. I'd prefer the physical media, but I'm not willing to buy it at a high price.

The price is bs, yes capcom we wanted new games on psn but not overpriced ones, six dollars is a fair price. Don't get me wrong resident evil 1 is a cool game and all but at ten to fifteen bucks I could buy the much better game cube remake.... well it would probably be used... but I never really had an issue with a scratched game cube disc..

There is a lot of wrongful hate in this post. For everyone who thinks Capcom set the $10 price tag, it is actually Sony who decide the final price, Sven says so in a reply on the Capcom Unity forums.

I'll buy this, even if it's an extra $4. I still have the PS1 disc, the Gamecube remake and the DS remake, but I'll buy it just to have it on my PSP. It's still one of my favorite games.

$9.99 for a game of this caliber is an excellent deal. We should all be stoked on this release and support it in hopes of PSN releasing more classics of this quality. As a long time ps and re fan i already have this game in original long box and director's cut, and still view this as a must buy. Strongly agree with the above wishing there were some way of incorporating trophies into these classics.

Oh man, i would totally buy RE1 and some other PSone games if they incorporated trophies. That would be the bomb....
Anyways, $10 for RE1 is a steal...amazing game, kids nowadays are so lucky to play games of this caliber for so cheap.

it's the 28th of May - 7 central - no resi on psn.
you know re2 was rated back early this year for psn...and it's not out. i question this date joystiq has posted.
i'd shit my pants if they dropped the bomb and went live with both at the same time.
yeah, that's my way of coping at the moment. hahaa
