Originally, Kelly wanted to use a full-sized yoga ball, but the rubber was too resistant and didn't play well with the other components. Check out her video after the break to get a more detailed explanation of how it all works.
A 'real' Katamari controller

In the photo above you'll see Kelly Farrell -- and she's a hell of a lot smarter than us. The twentysomething created, with the help of hacking collective NYC Resistor, a Katamari Damacy controller that uses a real ball. The big silver metal ball uses an optical mouse along with [technical jargon goes here] to make a very cool controller.

Next thing you know you have to wear a red jumpsuit to play the next mario, carry a plastic gun to play Call Of Duty and put on a pair of awkward plastic boxing gloves to get some Fight Night going on.
I own more plastic pretend-toys now then I did when I was a kid.. geez.

Isn't it great? I got enough Wii Wheels to start a go kart track.

Been busy working so much I'm going completely nutshit. Still want to see it though, that and the new Terminator.

So you have to hold the mouse against the ball?
[I sounded a lot smarter when I just asked this question and didn't tag on some useless information confirming that I would never have the talent to do this. Edited]

Gotta to love getting your posts edited, eh joystiq ;) .
I think it's a great idea, but having to hold the mouse would detract from it's value. Now that she said she made a holder, it's absolutely splendid.
Is that what you guys want to hear?

Thats cool, though Katamari should have bundled that themselves :D
Not very practical though :( After I've gutted mt PS3 controller to play Katamari, how will I be able to play anything else with it, unless I go get a new one >.<
Oh well :P

I know I'm going to get a huge vote down for this, but what is so impressive about making a huge trackball? You find them on 1970s arcade cabinets, so this isn't exactly something that takes a huge deal of effort.

A lot of effort? The cosmetics, maybe, but trackballs are already analog, so all the components to make this work already exist in the PS2 controller.
Besides, it's not like this product already exists in retail format:

Huge waste of time considering it was already done and can be quickly and easily modified by just stamping a bigger ball on an already existing controller.

Why bother when I can buy it in a much more attractive, shrink wrapped, actual retail product for less? This was a pure exercise in wasted resources.

I still think it should be released on the Wii with some kind of hamster ball like thing you can put the control in :p

To all those wondering how it's different from a standard trackball, keep in mind that katamari requires input from *two* joysticks to work.
The trackball-enabled PS2 controller mentioned above would not work, as it's only acting as a single joystick.
Kelly's rig interprets the ball's movement and translates it into the dual-joystick input katamari is based off of.

The only reason KD requires two joysticks to work is because they programmed it that way. They could have programmed it to just use one.
Look, I think it's very cool that she worked this out and I certainly don't want to diminish the accomplishment, but as she said herself in the video it IS just a giant trackball.

Hitting the downvote button makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
Like COD MF 2. And this. Very cool, it's like a blown up track ball that is actually functional for gaming.
