It looks as though Sony is planning to introduce yet another PS3 SKU in the coming weeks. A reader has tipped us to a new addition to Best Buy's product database -- a "limited edition" PS3 bundle that includes a 80GB system and two games. It sounds similar to Target's post-GDC PS3 bundle, which included MotorStorm and Resistance.
According to the database, this new SKU is scheduled for release on June 9th, one week after the start of this year's E3 Expo. The listed price for the bundle is $399, the current price for a PS3 system now. Analysts have repeatedly stated a PS3 price cut is in the works, but this new SKU may suggest otherwise. Conversely, Sony may opt to drop the price on a "bare bones" bundle, while offering this new "elite" package at the now-standard price.
For now, this new bundle may be exclusive to Best Buy, similarly to Target's post-GDC bundle. The UPC listed uses a prefix that is typically used in Best Buy's PlayStation products. If Sony packages some newer high-profile games with the system (we have a few in mind), the $399 price point might be a bit more attractive. Oh, and Sony, please don't bundle Lair and Haze with the system, kthanks.

If they don't do a $50 price cut at E3 (which it looks likely) they have to cut $100 when it does eventually drop. If they don't land in the 360's general price point, once the 360 does drop in price again they'll once again have the perception of being substantially more expensive for basically the same thing. Very important when it comes to consoles being given as gifts.
It's all about perception at this point. Unless you're one of those people who only buys items online, when most people see $399, the round number 400 comes up cause even with tax the closest big round number is 400. If they see $349, most people will still round up to 400 because when they figure in the tax 400 is the closest large round number. $300 is around the range where people start convincing themselves an item isn't too expensive and that they can afford it.

Hey Andrew:
I won't defend Haze, but Lair was a great game that wasn't given enough credit. It is an excellent exclusive game that got blasted because it had a complex control system that required some learning as opposed to the single move motion games in Wii Sports at the time. Let's be honest: the controls respond very well. People just got pissed off that they actually had to take a few minutes to learn how to control the dragons instead of repeating the same moves over and over like in the Wii games of the time.
On second thought, Sony opponents have been negative about anything and everything that involves motion controls on any system not made by Nintendo.
Now that can be found for cheap everybody should try it. You won't be disappointed.

What would sell more, a PS3 with 2 games for 399, or a PS3 by itself for 299?

$299, wouldn't even be close.
You know for these bundles, if they really wanted them to sell well they'd give vouchers for ANY two games of your choice to be redeemed at any major retailer for say a year after purchase. I love the bullshit lines they give about giving value, what they're trying to do is milk sales for older games (yes they include packed in games in total sales) while at the same time try to hook you on their first party franchises (MGS being a very special case), much like a drug dealer will give you the first hit for free or cheap lol.

Interesting.
I think Sony is going to do a few things like this to spur sales and get rid of stock of the PS3 phat in preparation for the September or so release of the PS3 slim.
As part of this plan, they will also not announce the PS3 slim until August, probably.
yay

It's June 9th. Anyone seen this new bundle yet? I'm going to buy a PS3 and Infamous no matter what, but it'd be nice to get the new bundle.

I just called my local Best Buy and they said there was no new bundle they got today, and she checked the system..nice lady.. nothing new coming set for arrival either.. I'm thinking this was fake... I'm just going to goto Target and get that Bundle.. I'm not paying $400 for a system and get NO Games with it at that cost. Sony has just been dropping the ball constantly with this system. I kinda want one but 'm REAL happy with my 360.

I called a Best Buy near where I work in NYC. The woman on the phone saw a PS3 bundle in the system for release today she said, but did not know anything about it. She asked around and told me that nobody seemed to have any information about it. She said she would look into it and call me back (very good customer service) when she found something. She also suggested that it might be exclusive to only certain Best Buy locations, but she was just speculating at that point.
Awaiting her call back...

Well all the sources I've seen are pointing to the opposite.. plus.. I know what the woman told me when I called... I'm still saying this was fake.. if there was going to be something, it would have been in Sunday's ad... did anyone see anything in it.. I sure didn't. Right now there's the Uncharted bundle for $500 the one at Target for $400, and then the $400 one at Gamestop/EB with Advent children... out of those.. I'm going with Target's deal...
Wal-mart also has a online only bundle but there's no decent games to choose from that I don't already own on 360.

I just called three BB around the area here in southern california. None of them have any type of new PS3 bundle in stock or show a pending delivery of PS3s to the store. Their only available are a stand alone PS3 80GB/$399 or Uncharted Bundle/$499 I was going to buy a PS3 anyway for 399 but I would hate to buy one and then this bundle come out in a few days or so. I'm thinking this was a hoax!
