Call of Duty 4 reaches 13 million players on Xbox Live

With the release of the recent full-length trailer for Modern Warfare 2, the gaming populous' attention has been turned away from the original Modern Warfare (considering the game's getting a follow-up, we think its Modern-ness could be disputed by this point, but we digress). However, Infinity Ward community commissar Robert Bowling (a.k.a. fourzerotwo) recently stopped by Major Nelson's podcast to explain why CoD4 shouldn't be ignored quite yet -- it just hit the remarkable 13 million player mark on Xbox Live.

This number is impressive for two reasons: First, it's two million more players than the last Xbox Live total we heard for Modern Warfare back in March. The second reason has been mentioned by a few gaming blogs already -- it's surpassed the total number of World of Warcraft players. Impressive? Well, yes -- though nobody is forced to subscribe to Call of Duty 4. As far as pure, lucrative retention is concerned, we think WoW still takes the cake.

World at War is far better imo.

How can you say that when every gun in World at War sounded like a typewriter.

Apparently you need to upgrade your sound system if you think they all sound the same. And I like it that you CoD4 women voted my post down =)

Just because they had so many people play it before doesn't mean they keep on playing it. Losers.

The number was 10 million at the beginning of the year. so in a little over 5 months, they managed to get 3,000,000 more people online ON ONE SYSTEM. this is quite an accomplishment given they have had no new updates or support, halo 3 to compete with, and a squeal to their own game come out.

World At Warcraft is nothing more than a treadmill that makes you fatter.

13,000,000 divided by 5.

People make different accounts for 'clans'. The also make new accounts so they can improve their overall stats. Which obviously drives the number up.

CoD4 is a better game. However Battlefield: Bad Company has better sound than CoD4.

@Czar Do you really think dividing by 5 is even close? xbox gold accounts are 50 dollars a year. of the 13 million, i would be surprised if even 100 people are paying 250 dollars a year to be in clans. plus you can just put in clan tags in the game.

Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty WaW are both great games, so enough bickering already. The only valid complaint is that WaW feels a bit like an expansion pack since it's the same engine and the gameplay is extremely similar. Regardless, both great games.

Failures are okay, at least I remember why CoD4 sucks not only for the game play but for the people that play it too. They rated my first post down even though it was just imo (in my opinion) as everyone on here has given their opinion too but their opinion is just as epic fail as mine, but again these girls just like CoD4 and just mad that WaW beats it on the top played every week, odd huh even though CoD4 is a better game?

I'm sorry but the only people who will EVER think COD World at War is better than COD 4 are those who missed out on COD 4 and want to fit in and those who enjoy playing cheap MP40 fests.

I like CoD4 on the PC. The best part about the game is the unlock-able abilities and weapons. I got World at War with the Nvidia card I bought. I have yet to play it though.

I have a feeling MW2 is not going to be anywhere near as good as MW was.

I think in celebration of such a milestone, and to promote the release of the new game, they should release some new maps. Heck, have Treyarch quit wasting time on WaW, and have them make them!

Decent idea as long as they dont make bad maps or just make day or night versions.

Or better yet, they could just make the maps that they put out forever ago free. But seeing as maps and junk from COD2 still cost I don't see that happening, guess some people don't get that they should just copy the Bungie model of map pack pricing.

Well, in 2008 they had 17million combined Xbox Live accounts (Gold & Silver). And they reported that the "majority" were gold. So you can play with those numbers and make your own conclusion.

After picking up World at war at the steam sale I can say that compared to Cod 4 it really doesn't measure up. I played Cod 4 on 360 for about a year and a half and I just wish steam would have a sale on that already. Probably not gonna happen anytime soon because its been on the top ten sales ever since Ive been looking at it.

It works great, but has a kind of chirp to it. I tried to research that online and I guess resistors heat and vibrate or something causing that.

Awesome card. my motherboard and case wont support it because they put my ethernet port right next to the PCI-e 2.0 slot. I cant get a 2 slot card so i just went with the BFG geforce 9800 GT OC 1gb

The board I have put a PCI slot in between the two PCI-E slots so That one card hides the only PCI slot my Mobo has. So no Xi-Fi for me.

I like ur setup better tho because 1 you have the option of a 2 slot card and you could also use sli(not that you would need to with a card like that)
