Blank Mage:

JJ?! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

I believe Yoda once said "Plot holes do not make one great!" JJ is a flash in the pan all style no substance Hollywood director, not any kind of visionary or artist.

Tim Burton.....yeah no. "OK gang, what should we do next-a remake/adaptation, or should I advertise my name REALLY BIG over someone else's work?" Yep, there's your genius "spirals EVERYWHERE!" director.

PS, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Sheppy says:

"Fact of the matter is Citizen Kane wasn't even recognized as a great film until decades late"

"The movie was largely hated by filmgoers and critics alike"

Actually, though it only broke even at the box office, the film was well received critically at the time of its release. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive on average. It was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, won Best Screenplay, and won the National Board of Review Best Picture. Additionally, it was no where near twenty years before it reached its current position of respect. By the time it finished its run in Europe in the mid-1950's, Welles was being discussed as a genius by the most influential critics of the time.

That said, I agree that the genre already has plenty of work that legitimizes it as an art form. That doesn't mean that we don't need a Citizen Kane that we can all point to and say "look at what can be done in the medium." My money is on Team ICO providing such a game this generation or next.

Fallout 3, while a great game had a lot of problems. Aside from technical stuff like the shitty graphics and animations, it's main story didn't really have much oomph, or really any at all SPOILER ALERT When Dad died I really didn't give a shit I could only think "Wow really? What a cop out bethesda" If this was really gaming's Citizen Kane I would have at least felt a little emotion towards characters other than dogmeat

I've heard several people complain about the graphics and I just don't get it. I don't think i'm blind and i'm always impressed with the graphics. They're not quite as good as say Gears of War 2 or Bioshock, but as good as Half Life 2, if not better. Some of the best graphics in the game are in areas that are not part of the main storyline. It makes me wonder if a lot of the complainers are people who use a lower end graphics card with all the default settings. I'm using an Xbox 360 to a 1080P TV and it still looks pretty good. The main story only took about 35 hours for me, but i'm at 65 hours now and still haven't checked out every area in the game. I haven't even started with any expansion packs! Very few games seems to last this long.

I thought a game couldn't top Half Life 2, but this is pretty close. I guess it's not perfect, but a game like Fallout 3 only comes around every 10 years it seems like.

Every paint stroke, every note on a sheet of music, every word in a novel, every syllable of a poem....a single one missing ruins the most classic of works.

until a video game is equal measure of this, we shan't have our citizen kane.

I don't doubt its possibility, but to go with del Toro's cinema analogy, I would say we are still in the era of attraction. We're still messing around with the camera, seeing what crazy crap we could film, and what will drive people to the theaters just out of pure primitive interest. We've sitll some time before we turn video games into an equally effective story telling medium. Again, I don't doubt it's coming, but we are taking a long time to get there.

He said effective, not using nanomachines as a cure all for every plot hole (of which there are no shortage of).

Citizen Kane is an overrated film. So if a video game is going to be like the movie, at least impact wise on the industry, than it will be the most overrated game ever.

Halo 3?

Don't get me wrong, it was a good game, but received way too much hype/attention/fanfare than I felt it deserved. I just think there wasn't anything groundbreaking about it.

Now Half Life 2, that was groundbreaking.

"Citizen Kane is an overrated film."

Because you say so? Never mind that it's highly regarded by basically every film group and school, because kevin says it's overrated.

I remember he said he was inspired by Gears of War for one of his movies (either Pan's Labyrinth or Hellboy II). He said he liked the look of blood hitting the screen.

I really see what the means, games are uniquely positioned to tell stories in a way different and I feel better than any other form of entertainment. Basically the best way I could say it is Citizen Kane level choose your own adventure stuff

This game came out in 2000. It's called Shenmue.

Maybe Guillermo classifies that one as the industry's "Birth of a Nation", "Battleship Potemkin", or "Metropolis". It's so hard to get into his crazy genius head.

I'm not sure that gaming culture would embrace a Citizen Kane-like game. It would involve over 120 hours of gameplay, lots of griding, and in the end, you find out that the super-weapon was an item you'd had in your inventory from the first cutscene. There would be a lot of rage at that.

But let's see... the ingredients of Citizen Kane:
1) An epic game
2) that bombed on release and very nearly destroyed its creators and the publishing studio
3) that came into critical acclaim, beloved by nearly all who have played it
4) and is widely considered one of the best of its time.

It's already been made. It stars a woman of ambiguous ethnicity, a pig-man, and a bunch of jamaican rhinos.

The Dark Wayne -

That's not what I said at all. My point was that movies from the 30s, unless the film has deteriorated badly, maintain a visual quality that allows it to be appreciated at the same level as modern movies. The constantly evolving technology of videogames makes that more difficult, as games made even 5 years ago pale in comparison to the cutting edge of PC or even console games.
