Thank God for video game soundtracks. I wouldn't listen to any music if I didn't listen to this stuff. The quality's better and it's much cheaper too.

I like both mainstream, orchestral and movie/video game sound tracks. Have you heard of the Minibosses? They're pretty good to work to.

Congratulations! I know how hard it must have been to hire an organ player that knows both the Castlevania theme and the FFVII battle music!

I never understood the point of listening to game music when you're not playing a game, so the concept of actually paying extra to listen to said music just blows my mind.

Haha...you make a good point. Personally I like (certain) game sound tracks as background noise when I'm working. It's familiar enough to enjoy and it helps drown out all the damn chatter that occurs around my desk.

The Killer7 soundtrack stands on its own as a great collection of electronic tunes. The Katamari Damacy soundtrack is 90% made of straight up pop songs which are also applicable outside of playing the game.

Maybe not so much Resident Evil though, or many survival horror games, but it is really nice to have the assets. I've used pieces from the RE4 soundtrack in a few of my student films. I gave a mate of mine the SIlent Hill 2 soundtrack for him to complete his front lawn Halloween display.

The music in games today is great stuff. So enjoying it outside of a game isn't rediculous. It's no different than when a band lends one of their tracks to a music soundtrack or when they record a song specifically for a movie release. Disturbed's "This Moment" comes to mind. They recorded that song just for Transformers but that song is one of their best.

For me, a lot of VGM serves a nostalgia purpose. Others are just really good songs. Still More Fighting, The True Mirror, even my non-gaming friends appreciate those. Just because it's played with a game doesn't mean it's not good in its own right.

Some soundtracks in videogames are tremendous on their own merits. I would use Silent Hill 2, Shadow of the Colossus and Killer7 as examples, personally. Simply calling it "game music" does a disservice, it's as valid a genre as any of the traditionally accepted music staples. Moreso if you count nu-metal as music ¬.¬

Admittedly there is a vast amount of generic, forgettable tripe (music is not always the primary concern in a videogame) but there are some gems. Whether you've played the game or not you can always appreciate good music, regardless. And those that have played the games get the benefit of scene association and in some cases, nostalgia!

With shit like Lady Gag-reflex topping the charts I can't believe people still sneer at game soundtracks!

As a concept/character artist (not saying I'm the best, lol) video game and movie music helps me draw from that world. It's more of an art thing for me really.

Hey, I'm glad y'all can get into it, I just personally don't understand the point. Especially when there's so much great music out there that stands on its own. A good soundtrack enhances a game, no doubt, but I prefer to leave it paired with the game itself.

Well, the point of it is, if it sounds good listen to it!

It's just a different form of music. Asking what's the point of listening to it outside of the game is like asking what's the point of listening to Slip Knot or Britney Spears custom tracks while fragging people in CoD4.

I never got into The Paper Chase but I just previewed a couple of the songs and they sound darkly intense, but still sort of playful. Plus, I'm a sucker for a good concept album so I may have to pick it up after all.

Lots of people think digital distribution is killing music, but I'm happy that foreign music is breaking through slowly thanks to iTunes & amazon. It beats hours spent tracking down a dependable pirating site, or hoping it will show up on an ebay auction that nobody else sees.

I still can't easily get to all the releases I'm interested in, but it's getting there step by step. I even saw a live Sherbets album for only $4 on iTunes a few weeks ago. If it's getting to the point where some stuff can be at a killer bargain, things are looking good.

Yeah, but how many of those 86 tracks are accessible to the buyer right from the start?

I heard you've gotta pay an extra $5 to listen to the music from the "Versus" levels...even though they're already on the disc.

Digital price is $10, at least at sumthingdigital.com. I'm pretty disappointed that you guys highlighted this and ignored the awesome Street Fighter IV OST (same place, same price, also today).

I really wish more companies would release their soundtracks in America so I wouldn't have to keep pirating them. I'd gladly support game soundtracks if I didn't have to spend 30-40 dollars a pop to get them in the US.

This is a move in the right direction... I guess. Then again, it's kinda too late for them now, since I've had the soundtrack for a while. The first mega-spoiler-ish fight is the best music in the game.

I hear you. I can justify maybe listening to the Lumines Soundtrack (good stuff from Mondo Grosso), but the MGS3 soundtrack for example, mostly put me to sleep, save for "Snake Eater" and two of the other orchestral tracks.

Sumthing Digital's downloads are 192 kbps CBR, which is pretty darn lossy, even for me. On the other hand, they're running a 20% off promotion, and getting the SF IV and RE 5 soundtracks for $8 each is a pretty darn good deal.

Hmmm.

Cool...good but the music is nothing memorable...

Anyways, how would you listen to the music? Much of it is creepy or weird, nothing you could really enjoy....so how, like blasting it while cruising top down in your convertable scoping for chicks....yeah ok, maybe the weird gothic 300lb chicks...lol

Be sure to loop the Mercenaries mode's track and listen to it 50 times each day.

And whenever it starts, you should say "If you kill multiple enemies in a row, you'll get yaself a nice bonus!"
