UOL Tecnologia reports that Tectoy's Zeebo, the 3G console first revealed at GDC earlier this year, is now available in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For those that lost the Zeebo in the OnLive shuffle, the console's main thrust is its free connection to a 3G network, which allows it constant access to its library of download-only titles. The other major selling point is its price, which rests at R$499 (~US$299), while games can be had for only R$7-30 ($3-13). Three titles are bundled with the system: FIFA 2009, Need For Speed Carbon and Brain Training. The system also comes with free credits to download Prey Evil, Quake, and Quake II.
See the Zeebo in action (and in Portuguese) after the break.
Garbage? The Xbox 360 is what you call garbage - a defective console that should be recalled but for some reason people are brainwashed into buying it only to complain a week later "Oh noez, RROD" ... "E74 Error" and so on. Buy a PS3 and your set.
Maybe it would be DOA in developed countries but for developing countries and emerging markets, this does not seem like a bad idea. Although actually, many developing countries do not have a stellar internet infrastructure for these download only games.
Jakko, believe it or not, but unfortunately, a significant number of PS3s also have build quality issues, especially the launch models (20gb and 60gb) with their 90nm CPUs and GPUs and older Blu-Ray drives. I believe the newer PS3s now are much more reliable, at least I hope, I haven't been paying attention.
Garbage? Brazil is probably screaming with joy that they have a gaming system, They aren't fortunate enough to have gaming systems like we do. You are calling a gaming system you will never play Garbage because you are lucky enough to live here in the U.S.A. You don't even know how many people in Brazil will kill for that console. But hey be happy you live here in the United States.
I think this is kind of cool. Of course it isn't cutting edge, but you have to keep context in mind - Most people don't realize that there aren't exactly gamestops at every corner in Rio. I went there a couple of years ago, and my friends who lived there were still stoked about the Genesis 3.
Shut up, you don't know what you're talking about.
As a brazilian, I have to say that most of the people of medium/high classes have PS2s or better consoles. It's not hard to buy a Xbox 360 here, we even have the National Kit, neither is hard to buy a PS3 or Wii. The HDTV prices are pretty low too, btw.
The Microsoft Official Brazilian Kit might be a bit more expensive than the products from game stores that import, but we get 3 year warranty, just like in USA, for buying from Microsoft Brazil. Last week a friend of mine's 360 got the E74 error. He called Microsoft and they replaced for a Jasper one, at no costs.
You see, the prices from the grey market and game stores that import are pretty compatible with the Dollar to BRL exchange (1 Dollar = 2,30 BRL). You only have to pay more if you're really looking for the official kit.
The main problem is that in Brazil, piracy reigns. What consoles do you think that sell better in Brazil? Gamecube, PS3? No. The consoles that sell the most are the PS2 and 360, 'cause there are pirate games for them.
WTF? Just go buy a REAL game console or a PC! What's the damn point? All games listed are easily found used or downloadable at gamestop and on the web. What a waste...
oh, ok, i'll just to the gamestop and buy a 360 for $199. wait a second, there are no gamestops in brazil and a 360 costs over $500 here.
i'm not saying this is a good idea, i think it will fail, but you have to see things in context. in the us this console would make absolutely no sense, but in brazil things are A LOT different.
Seriously, read the above comments. Brazil is a DEVELOPING country. They don't have GameStops everywhere and most people can't afford the high prices. Zeebo is a cheap alternative to that and if it helps steer people away from the piracy that runs rampant in the part of the world, then more power to them.
I'm glad there's another console on the market, even if it seems rather undesirable. The situation would feel stagnant if it were the same three hardware manufacturers releasing their products on the same cycle.
For every Mega Drive there was an also-ran in the Phillps CDi. We need more CDis, you know. It keeps the bigger boys on their toes. Not that they'll be quaking in their boots from the Zeebo, I'm just saying.
It does not play cell phone games, it downloads games via a cell phone. Brazil has an extensive 3G network and they will be pushing their games that way.
one must ask themselves the question - why not from another part of the world?
technologies are changing fast and this seems to be the way to go ultimately. here's a decent start to that.
i guess. i don't know, i could see you having an account with someone like nintendo and having all your titles tied to that account - so as time went on the hardware could do more, but there'd be an emphasis on digital content. after the internet dies, when you're paying for an internet site package like you get your tv programming, packages of 'approved' web sites.
I gotta say as a Wii owner (and I like my wii) I never liked it's UI and the Zeebo has a very simple but nice UI and easier to use than the cluttered Wii version from that video. Take note Nintendo.
Pretty sure he has a Dual Shock 2 in his hands at 2.21. Correct me if I'm wrong but the cord looks like a ps2 one and doesn't have the crinkle bit coming out the zeebo controller.
I really just don't understand why you wouldn't get a ps2 anyway.
As Developers all over the world are trying to Grasp a DEV Kit from the Big 3, us Brazilian Game Devs can't get Hold of a TecToy one... What a shame...
dude its not a bad deal at all. As a matter of fact, im in Brazil right now on a business trip. the import taxes here are uber expensive. yesterday i went to a bookstore in Salvador shopping, and when i went to check the price for a 360 copy of Fear 2, the game went for R$289....THATS ABOUT 150 BUCKS!!!
so good for these guys, i think given the circumstances in this country, this Zeebo is going to clean up....Plus the fact that this system is from Brazil, they will definitely eat it up. Not to mention this system looks as festive as a float in Carnival!
Just a caveat, if you're in Salvador: don't ask for people caprichar (kah-pree-shar. literally, "do it with care") on your food. In that city particular lingo, that means soak everything in strong pepper
Well. I'm from brazil and that price certainly isn't much cheaper than a PS2 over here nowadays. Like most guys said, its about context. Videogames are growing popular both as entertainment but also as an investiment here. Things are looking up in the brazilian videogame market. And it maybe sort of dull and unappealing console (for those who have the capability and financial means to get an ps2,ps3,xbox360,wii), but the intention and pioneering counts as points to tectoy in my opinion. Let's hope Tectoy will learn from this and get better with time. I think they deserve a little credit. They were the company which produced all sega consoles in the master system-genesis era and they did pretty fucking well. Well enough to endure Sega's meltdown and still come out in the greenzone.
I wish all the best to TecToy in this endeavour. It's really a nice idea, and has potential to be marketed in several developing countries.
.... however, it's still R$ 100 more expensive than it should be. a R$ 399 Zeebo would have more chances in the market. It would cost practically the same of two PS3/360/Wii games, a very good sales pitch.
Nevertheless, thanks for the initiative, TecToy, and good luck.
I think that this console is really something of intrest in Brazilian market, yes we have the XB360 National Kit like Conrado said but it's R$2.300 that's a lot, it's $1.150(and the PS3 are much more expensive) so this Zeebo is for those who don't that kind of money.
The problem isn't the peracy it's the taxes, piracy is a solution for this colossal taxes that the goverment is charging.
Tectoy has a viable plan. It is pionering the online delivery of games which addresses the rampant piracy going on in Brazil. Most of the country has access to a 3G network while broadband internet access is less than 15% so PSN and Xbox live don't have a chance yet. Their next play should be a mobile device designed for gaming i.e. beat Sony, MS and Apple to the punch. Having Qualcomm as one of their investor should help
