Hands-on: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (PS3/360)
Remember the last Transformers game? The one that was so painfully bad it made you want to smash your controllers to bits and turn to a life of reading books? Developer Luxoflux sure remembers, and that's why it set out to make the game based on the upcoming movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, a lot better. Thankfully, it had a clearly outlined example of what not to do courtesy of Traveller's Tales.

When you get dropped into the single-player mode, you'll get taken through a brief tutorial in order to "check your systems out." On the Decepticon side, you'll get Starscream as your trainer, and the Autobots have Ironhide taking you through the paces. All the basic controls like movement, jump, targeting and so on are covered, after which you'll move on to transforming. To transform from robot to vehicle mode, you'll hold down the right trigger and ... keep it held down. That was our main gripe with this game, actually. It was too easy to have your finger pop off that trigger and whoops, you're a robot again. It's particularly aggravating when you're a flying 'former, revert back to aerial mode and have to get your bearings again.
Every character in the game has a primary weapon, a secondary weapon and a special ability. You can toggle your weapon mode on and off by squeezing the left trigger, which will bring up your aiming reticule, and the right trigger fires. For instance, Ratchet has an Energon Multi-Beam as his main weapon, and by hitting the right bumper or R1 you can switch to Sticky Grenades, his secondary offense. His special ability is Combat Repair, which heals nearby friendlies. They've made the special abilities emulate the characters somewhat: Optimus has "Valiant Leader" (he takes damage for you), Megatron has an instant-kill Fusion Arm Cannon and Ironhide can drop an Automated Rocket Turret.
In the single-player level we played, we had to kidnap several scientists and take them to holding areas. You'd do this by scaring them out of buildings -- pound a structure or shoot it enough to demolish it, and the terrified scientist comes running out. Scoop 'em up, and then take them to the beacon on the map. Rinse and repeat. It got fairly repetitive ... but that's where the other game mode leaps in to save the day.
Luxoflux has done a great job with the mutliplayer 4 x 4 battles, which run rings around the single-player campaign. The developers have nailed the scale -- when you have Grindor up in the sky trying to chase you down, you'll be grateful for that ability to turn into a speedy little car and zip away (thanks, Bumblebee!). You won't mind being a small guy vs. a big dude, because you'll have increased speed on your side. Just be sure to stay out of the reach of their weapons.
Ironically, the most improved part of the game are the transformations, which look terrific. If you jump off a building and transform into an auto or a jet on the way down, you'll either hit the ground with wheels screeching, or rocket off into the sky -- pretty thrilling stuff. A couple of the characters, like Sideways, are armed with sniper rifles, allowing you to grab a good vantage point and take a few shots before zooming off to a new spot. Translation: kablam, transform, roll out, transform, shoot again.
We played deathmatch in our sessions (Autobots vs. Decepticons, of course), and Luxoflux promises several other types of multiplayer will be available, including Control Points and some sort of Capture the Flag mode.
One blemish on the multiplayer goodness: when you die, you'll respawn after a countdown ... and then you plummet to the ground in a meteor before you can get back in the game. It's a tedious process that gets old after the first time you see it. Given that we're so close to the release of the game, we doubt this will change, so it might be something we'll just have to learn to love or just not loathe.
Activision and Luxoflux will be out at BotCon this weekend with a playable build of the game available to attendees, so if you're in the SoCal area, transform and roll out.

starscream as a trainer? Geez, that'll end well
The Dark Wayne @ May 27th 2009 9:10PM
is the meteor thing controllable or a cutscene like in Too Human? Because falling from space in a controlled dive sounded awesome in Section 8 but sounds shitty here
Kevin Kelly @ May 27th 2009 9:22PM
Dark Wayne, no it's just a cutscene, basically. You have to wait until the meteor lands before you get any control.
ArchiGamer @ May 27th 2009 9:24PM
@Kevin
Well that's sucks to know.
The Dark Wayne @ May 27th 2009 9:30PM
that does sound stupid
Obie @ May 27th 2009 10:00PM
You fail me again Starscream!
Adeese @ May 27th 2009 11:03PM
If they must have the meteor cutscene, it might have made more sense to play that while respawning, so that it ends just as the timer is up and you can get back into the game right away.
Ah, well - not like we expected much from it anyways, since it's a movie game and all. At least it sounds mostly enjoyable to play for a while. That's more than can be said of many other games.
Jimmyjimjim @ May 27th 2009 9:09PM
The first game was such an absolutely frustrating piece of dogshit that I don't think I'll even try the sequel- kinda like the actual movie.
Sorry, Luxoflux, you're the victim of a shitty precursor.
chimaera9 @ May 27th 2009 9:16PM
I might consider getting this, but holding down the right trigger button to STAY transformed sounds like a definite game-breaker for me. How can developers overlook something so simple and not realize how annoying and hand-cramping that can be? I play Command and Conquer on the PS3 a fair amount, and after just an hour, my wrist and hand hurts from extensive R2 pressing and holding (for the command menu). Since I'm a professional musician, I really have to be careful about stuff like that, but I imagine others find it equally annoying. It would be enough for me to put the game down.
So, I guess I can hope that the developers will change the control scheme. Doubtful.

The meteor spawn wait and holding the trigger down to stay transformed does sound pretty horrible.
VaultICEE @ May 27th 2009 9:22PM
Is it just me, or does that look like a ginormous mecha-tized Big Daddy?!
CAN'T UNSEE!

oh my god i see it now...!
Reevr @ May 28th 2009 2:12AM
DAMN YOU!!!
ArchiGamer @ May 27th 2009 9:23PM
Will this be like Wolverine and be good?
Answers please. vv
Malascythe @ May 27th 2009 9:41PM
Wolverine wasn't that great...
ice~ @ May 27th 2009 9:42PM
I'm playin it right now its really fun! not a AAA title but c'mon for a movie game...
The Dark Wayne @ May 27th 2009 9:51PM
wolverine was great for a movie game, incredible even, only pretty good compared to other games. I really enjoyed it a lot actually, but in the end it had a really small number of moves and the mini bosses like the lava monsters and wendigos were just useless exercises in repetition
ryan @ May 27th 2009 10:03PM
Wolverine was great because the developers actually wanted to make a good Wolverine game before the movie came out.
FinalFolly @ May 27th 2009 9:26PM
Traveller's Tales did the console version of the first movie tie-in game. Vicarious Visions only did the DS verison of the first transformers game as well.
SpydaKat 17 @ May 27th 2009 9:43PM
Damn....I wish I had a voice like Optimus.
SpydaKat 17 @ May 27th 2009 9:50PM
Wait what the hell was that? I could have done a better trailer. Where's the mandatory orchestra music?
Velsar @ May 27th 2009 9:54PM
What's wrong with reading books?
WREturns @ May 27th 2009 10:10PM
Fact: Transformers was the worst anything ever. I would have gladly done a line of coke of a dude's wang while watching a dubbed-in-French extended Director's cut edition of Shakespeare in Love and simultaneously performing my own second and completely unnecessary circumcision with a dull blade than once again sit through what can only be described as a consistent and thorough ass-raping of my childhood dreams as they pertain to what a live-action Transformers movie COULD have been. That being said it's doubtful I'll see the second movie and impossible that I'll play this game.
ArchiGamer @ May 27th 2009 10:13PM
Don't cut your wiener, man, don't man!!
Filter @ May 27th 2009 10:31PM
So there i was, balls deep in WREturns' dreams and my clown nose fell off...
Garvey @ May 27th 2009 11:06PM
And then what happened Filter?! I'm on the edge of my seat!
Deadpool @ May 27th 2009 11:25PM
I thought they did a fine job with the movie. I don't know what you expected from a Transformers movie. Good Robots vs Bad Robots for a source of some power on a planet alien to them...that's usually the theme isn't it? In fact, that's the only theme Transformers ever had for the most part. I just look at the movie as another form of Transformers, like Beast Wars and Energon.
fallenxion @ May 27th 2009 11:35PM
When you try to say that something is bad, it's usually best to give some premises to that conclusion. Otherwise your argument is weak and holds no merit. Also, to state an opinion as a fact is ignorant and illogical.
nofriendo @ May 27th 2009 11:58PM
Normally I would agree with you Deadpool, but I'm gonna have to go with WRE here.
That was just the problem, It wasnt about good robots vs. bad robots. They had to throw in the "boy with the american dream" and some rediculous scenes of him maybe jerking off in his room or not. The only good explianation for the robots speaking english was that they looked it up on the internet, and some shitty monologe with an american flag in the background.
I hate Micheal Bay so much. Way to adapt my childhood dreams into a 1990's shitty action flick.
WREturns @ May 28th 2009 12:34AM
Deadpool,
Except the cartoon didn't have the most cringe-worthy dialogue since Star Wars Episode 2, Michael Bay's standard racism (only the "black" robot dies?) and a bunch of retarded shit that made no sense like the autobots stomping around Shia's yard, or the hilarious dog-pees-on-robot gag, or the fact the humans did a better job of fighting the Decepticons than the Autobots did. And what about when Bumblebee asks Optimus Prime permission to speak? Did any of the others have to ask permission to speak? Also, how awesome was it when they made out on top of Bumblebee at the end? Oh, right, it wasn't awesome so much as unbelievably fucking stupid. Are those good enough reasons?
j.howlett @ May 28th 2009 1:22AM
i'm not judging you for how you feel about the movies but it is always funny to me when people only refer to a certain period when talking about these old properties. there have been plenty of versions of transformers since the original.
Vidikron @ May 28th 2009 2:19AM
I'm pretty sure we've discussed this before... but go back and actually watch the 80's cartoon again. It's utterly terrible. It's 10x the cheese factor of the movie... EASILY. I tried to watch again a few years back and my choldhood nostalgia was shattered. The toys were great, the cartoon was best left to my childhood. It sounds like you need a does of reality.
Vidikron @ May 28th 2009 2:28AM
"The only good explianation for the robots speaking english was that they looked it up on the internet, and some shitty monologe with an american flag in the background."
What kind of argument is that? Why were they speaking English on Cybertron in the original cartoon? Studying information in the internet is a perfectly valid explanation, especially for robots. Did you expect them say they took English classes?
The Dark Wayne @ May 28th 2009 12:29PM
I agree with WRE so much, i'm not gonna say transformers was oscar worthy thought provoking stuff, but it wasn't such quippy grown inducing drivel. Seen the new trailer? The mom and dad are still nothing but fucking jokes. First thing the mom says in a retarded voice "Oh gee i feel smarter already it smells smart doesn't it?" dad says "Smells like 40,000 dollars a year" HURHURHUR, ffs ive seen botched surgeries funnier than this shit.
gkwie @ May 27th 2009 11:13PM
Why keep it held down??? That's so lame!
The could have easily let you transform by pressing L3 or R3 (maybe both at the same time)...
tokyostomp @ May 27th 2009 11:35PM
the transformers movie sucked. i mean i never really seen the cartoons but script and overall goofyness of the movie was lame. i hate the movie despite my buddy saying it was awesome based soley on the fact that "megan fox was hot in the movie"
Momer @ May 27th 2009 11:43PM

Oh, no the Spoilers..so thats how Devastator looks on the movie? He has a vibrator in place of his head and walks like Chimpanzee? Eeeeekkk....

Although holding down the right trigger might get annoying, I am for sure going to purchase this game! It might be due to the fact that I love the movies but the graphics look incredible. I really want to buy this game but video games are so expensive, like at target.com, it is almost worth it to just rent the game and beat it within a matter of days. But, if anyone else is interested in purchasing this game we could always join together and swarm for it at eswarm.com and get the best deal possible online!

From what I have seen this game will be a LOT better than the first one. I have been watching videos of it all day and it seems to be cool.
Although I might prefer to collect the physical toys instead this time, the new TF2:ROTF toys look amazing. I also did some searching for new sites connected with the second movie and came up with this cool trading card online game www.tf2cards.ca - which has trailers and bot info on them, and a secret character card as well.
