Lips: Number One Hits shouts its way to retail this October
Microsoft has made a very odd announcement today, revealing a new Lips game heading to retail. Lips: Number One Hits will be compatible with the first title and features "popular tracks spanning diverse genres and generations that have graced the No. 1 position on major global charts." Some of these new tracks are:
- "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay
- "Disturbia" by Rihanna
- "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer
- "More Than Words" by Extreme
- "Apologize" by Timbaland featuring OneRepublic
- "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club
- "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye
- "Oh, Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison
- "Ready, Set, Go!" by Tokio Hotel

If a karaoke game is called LIPS, should an FPS be called FINGERS?
Seriously, it's about that silly!
Legacy @ May 27th 2009 11:46PM
Or a skating game called SKATE? How about a hospital game called HOSPITAL?
A rose by any other name...? No?
MC Double Def DP @ May 27th 2009 10:08PM
Maybe their research shows that releasing another retail game will generate more sales than their current DLC is doing on XBL... or maybe they're just dumb?
Dirk Dorkelson @ May 28th 2009 12:34AM
Also, the first game took a lot of knocks for having overly forgiving pitch-recognition software as well as some other faults. They could be trying to correct some of that.
Demaar @ May 28th 2009 12:43AM
That's what I was thinking dirk. They probably want to add some new features or change the engine, and it's quite possible that they can't do it through a game update, or they feel it'd be easier to point out the changes in a new retail package.
Personally, I hope they give the play your own song feature thingie some improvements.

What's with all these pre-E3 announcements? It's time to go incommunicado for a few days, let the help build.
VaultICEE @ May 27th 2009 11:10PM
EXACTLY what I've been thinking. If they don't release much at E3, I'll be totally disappointed...
PR0F3TA @ May 27th 2009 10:10PM
seeing the sales it looks to me like Lips isn't for the xbox crowd.... but at least it beats them announcing this during E3
MystileArmor @ May 27th 2009 10:21PM
Karma Chameleon?
So now they want the 23 people that actually bought the first one to get murdered by family members too?
Nap @ May 27th 2009 10:23PM
Is that Tim Heidecker from Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!?
Ricardo @ May 27th 2009 10:24PM
I have the first one its funny game and the mics are really nice
CH3BURASHKA @ May 27th 2009 10:29PM
How has lips sold?
Velsar @ May 27th 2009 10:34PM
I am sick and TIRED
REPEAT SICK AND TIRED
Of clicking "New Game Content"
Only to see 50 lips and rockband updates (I WANT THE OPTION TO CANCEL OUT ANYTHING I DONT WANT TO SEE, and FILTER IT) and maybe 1 game update I find by scrolling through 49 other things.
I'm sick of it, and while Lips might love everyone, put them as AUTOMATIC UPDATES... not stupid updates like what I'm seeing
MystileArmor @ May 27th 2009 10:52PM
Press ALT+F4 and it filters out all the stuff you don't want to see out of your main browser window.
Legacy @ May 27th 2009 10:53PM
Well...if that's the only news at the moment...so what? Should they make a seperate Joystiq Music so I have to jump through four different sites to see news about games? I hate posts about NPD charts and Cakes, but you don't see me complaining. I just go to the next one...
Tricky Bandit @ May 28th 2009 1:18AM
Hey I completely agree with being tired of having to go through a ton of Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and Lips DLC to get to what I consider REAL DLC. Not that its not DLC, but its just not what I want to see under new game content everytime. I wish that the Xbox had a different section for music based games DLC. Just a new tab called Music Based Content would suffice greatly for me.
Link408 @ May 27th 2009 10:40PM
sweet
i bought Lips for my sister for her birthday
and i fell in love with the Mics
and i can use the Mics on GH:M which rocks
so im definitely getting this

Oops double post.
Mr.Happy @ May 27th 2009 10:45PM
Oh my god.... NO ONE PLAYS LIPS!!! *GASP!*
Deezul @ May 27th 2009 11:04PM
I do. Target has it on sale, and couldn't pass up the price for the mikes. They are sweet mikes, now Harmonix just has to come through with their promise.
But I will say it makes little sense for another game. Please don't get stupid like Konami did and make the game ONLY available with the mikes. I have two - I don't need four. Please, Microsoft, don't be that dumb. Oh wait, they only sold "You're in the Movies" with a camera, and now it's cheaper to buy "You're in the Movies" than just to get a camera.
Which quite possibly will be useless if the motion controls come out.
Sorry for the rambling...
fasty @ May 28th 2009 12:10AM
I love Lips and would totally buy a content pack if the per track price is at the right rate. It's nice to buy the two or three songs I like each month from the DLC, but the song pack disc will be great for when I have all the friends over, ya know? I'd never buy Karma Chameleon as DLC, but I guarantee if it's on there, my friends will pick it.
nullset @ May 28th 2009 12:52AM
I read "Ready, Set, Go!" as "Ready Steady Go!" for a while there. That reminded me of the fact there has not been another Ouendan in a while, even with the music game boom and stuff.
Now excuse me while I go whine for hours about how iNiS is wasting their time with this not so top of the line project instead of making OTO3 or EBA2 (well, guess it's Nintendo's decision in part... but where's EBA2 iNiS goddamit). Or maybe music games that sell with bundled peripherals sell more?
rTwelve @ May 28th 2009 2:12AM
Why is the woman on the right getting her neck slashed?
Deezul @ May 28th 2009 6:01AM
She's attempting to stab the guy in the middle with her microphone, so he's attacking first.
DJMayhem @ May 28th 2009 9:11AM
Is it just me, or does the dude in the middle looks a little bit like Ben Gilbert?
Maybe?
The Alex @ May 28th 2009 1:29PM
Not sure why Microsoft feels the need to do this when these songs could be just added as new DLC (and Lips could use some more DLC!). If Lips is having a hard time selling, why not just lower the price of the DLC, more people might be inclined to purchase Lips if they knew that DLC was cheaper than Rock Band or Guitar Hero tracks. Releasing a new retail disc really isn't a solution, because now you're splitting the game up, when I have friends over, I'll have to swap discs for people who want to sing a song from Lips 1 or a song from Lips 2.
Honestly, this move just looks like Microsoft trying bolster it's "exclusive" numbers going into E3....
KnuxAran @ May 28th 2009 3:50PM
I'm almost positive this retail disc will work the same way Rock Band works. It sounds like you'll be able to export these songs (or export the original disc songs) and only have to use one disc for everything.
The Alex @ May 28th 2009 3:59PM
If the words that are coming out of your mouth are true, then this idea of a new Lips disc won't be that bad. Fingers are crossed that you've heard right.
Larkspeed @ Jun 24th 2009 2:14AM
This part:
"We can't say we totally get this announcement. Why go through the bother of putting out another retail disc (and incurring the costs of doing so), when you can just continue releasing DLC for the first game?"
When are reviewers and just people in general going to get it that not everyone buys stuff through the marketplace.
Some choose not to others simply can't for various reasons.
So I would say well done MS for realizing there is a market outside of xbox live and finding a quick and easy way of exploiting it
