Thanks to his or her flawless track record, when Ars Technica's mole speaks, we listen. So you'll understand why rumors of the PSP Go! and slim PS3 seem just a little more likely to us this morning. The mole says that (though it won't necessarily be announced at E3) the slimmer PS3 will arrive in August or September, after the regular-sized PS3s have dried up a skosh.
The mole's also pushing the PSP Go!, saying it will feature "lower power consumption and possibly a lower price." Read all of the shifty rodent's musings right here.

Now that Oblivion is cheap, I've been waiting for a price drop to pick up a PS3.
My love of The Elder Scrolls is sick and wrong. But not enough to justify buying a PS3 for the current price.

Unless there's a price drop or new functionality attached, I don't really see people getting ultra-hyped over a slimmer version of the same PS3 that's already out. At least, not more than major game announcements.

Sometimes a new coat of paint is all it takes to get sales going, figuratively speaking.

If they drop the price, I'll def. get one. I can always use another blu-ray player for downstairs. And having another game system to boot doesn't hurt.

I think the fat one looks cheap AND ugly. In fact, I really hate the way it looks... this looks much better. Not enough to make me buy one (I already have 360 and have plenty of good games to keep me busy), but it would at least remove one of the negatives if there are games "I must have" in the future...

Seems a bit early in the PS3's life cycle for a slim version, but I like the idea of a PS3 that doesn't look like a Foreman Grill.

same thing I was thinking...the PSOne came out around the time of the PS2 and the Slim PS2 came out in '05 a year before the PS3...this is just 3 years into the PS3's life cycle so for it to get a Slim model this early is a little different

A PS3 Slim and PSP Go! sound good. I can't imagine myself buying either of those seeing as how I have both PS3 and PSP. I guess there is a market out there that was holding out on PS3's because they were too big though, right? ... Right?

yea im with you. i've personally never seen the draw of these slimmer home consoles. portable consoles need slimmer models for obvious reasons but i know i'm not going out to buy another PS3 just because it's slimmer. as for the PSP, i'm waiting to see what they announce at E3 cause my launch PSP is about to give up the ghost and a more pocket friendly one would make me carry it more often.

While this is good news, I hope this isn't Sony's 'mega-ton'. We already have the hardware, we want to see software damnit.

I find it suspicious, obviously the first ps3 is an intrusion in the living room, with its "robust" size. and now a few years later its decide to release this much appealing style, that goes back their original designs concepts.

TGS is September 24 to September 27, so if this is true they will likely announce it there.

I like that my ps3 looks like a george forman grill!
The next best thing would be hulk hogans grill: https://www.buyhulkhogangrill.co.uk/vcc/tvnetworkltd/hulkhogangrill/443287/
Seriously though, I guess a slim ps3 would mean a price cut aswell surely? isn't that what happened with the PS2?

whys that? Got the best PS3...the backwards compatible one.
Now, I bought a 360 a month or so after launch. That was stupid. Of course it broke. (and before you say...oh shut up you can just send it in and get a new one for free) Nope. No RRoD. So I had to pay.

At least you've got the four ports, the card reader and the backwards compatibility. I bought one less than a month ago - how do you think folks like me will feel if this is true? :P

Really guys...really? It's sad that I have to break my own system I bought for 300 or so bucks. BTW, I didn't pay. I never got it fixed. It sits broke in my closet. I got a new free Xbox360 when I bought an HDTV.
Regardless...I did the smart thing. I switched over to the more reliable console. Did I ever have an issues with my PS1? No. My PS2? No. My PS2 Slim? No.

When my xbox 360 broke 2 years ago I switched over to a ps3 aswell... but I still tried to break the xbox till it would be repaired for free from microsoft so I could sell the refurb to someone else and make some of my money back.

It's possible that if enough people buy PS3s when the price is lowered the loss in profit could be negated by software sales. When more people have PS3s more people buy software, download games from PSN, buy peripherals, etc. Companies have always made more money from their software than the hardware; however, I'm sure Sony has looked into this.

I think we're getting this now precisely because Sony can't afford to cut price on the current PS3, and this revision will (speculation here, but I'm comfortable saying it) substantially cut manufacturing costs. So, you get a slimline model at a more competitive price point.
I have the 80GB/4-USB port/"limited" Backwards-compatible unit they released bundled with MGS4 last year, and I have zero buyer's remorse. Haven't found a PS2 game it couldn't run yet and the 4 USB ports... well, if you play Rock Band that's one less dongle you have to buy.

actually the slim will use less material, cheaper parts, and more standardized manufacturing costs that would overall be cheaper to produce.. Sony would actually lose LESS money for a slim over a shorter period of time. This will also intice the market as "NEWER product" to the average consumer.
