We wish all devs were as forthcoming as id's John Carmack. His update on the status of the iPhone version of Doom (or Doom Classic, as he's calling it) is exhaustive, but it's also rich with information and insight into porting an old-school classic onto new tech ... and doing it well.
We've dug up a few nuggets for you, like the fact that Carmack says he should be able to submit the game to the App Store by next month and that the game will use the original Doom sprites, but you should really take a few minutes to read the whole thing, it's really interesting stuff.

Doom is what got me into FPS. I love this game. I've probably boughten it in all it's different formats. 32X, PC, XBLA, GBA. Doom and Street Fighter 2. I'll just keep purchasing them over and over again.
Plus I loved making my own levels.

Yeah, actually Duke 3D was a lot easier to make levels for IMO. Both Duke and Doom are classic games. And level editing really added a lot of extra fun to the game. It was great to see your creation come to life. I'd put that wad file on 1.44 MB floppy drive, ride my bike over to my friends house and give him the file and we'd use our 28.8k modems for a frag fest. Oh.... how far we've come! = )

dude... we are totally the owners of this comments thread.
Mapping and modding really add to a game I think. Probably why I got so much into counter-strike. Actually played on a server that would host my maps. It was one thing to make them, it was another to jump in a full server and play in them.
I only made single player stuff in the Build engine games. It was fun as hell though. My little bro is actually in the middle of a fcked up artsy Doom 2 total conversion right now that he's been working on for ages.

Carmack surprised me with Wolfenstein. I had just about given up hope on FPS's on the iPhone. Though, I think it worked so well because it's so simple. The more complex they get, the less intuitive they will be. Doom still has that vertical auto-aim from the build engine games, so it should work pretty well.
Where the hell is Doom RPG, id??

I do not like the tilt strafe, as I am one of those retards that swings controllers about like im a guy playing a game in a movie. Wolf was impressive on iPhone though.

How does he find the time to do these ports when he is pretty much single-handedly building id Tech 5?

The tech is pretty much done, they are working on Rage right now, which John doesn't have as much of a hand in. He makes the engines, the teams make the games. Far cry from the old days when it was like him and a couple buddies cranking out entire games from their garage.
I'm pretty sure they're trying to put out Rage before they put idTech5 out.

yeah man. It's still a little shaky as far as frame rate and controls, but it plays, and it's free, and there's sound...not only that, but you can upload custom WADs into it. It's called "Doom for Android (FREE)" and the author is Scheff's Blend.
And yes, it is Doom the game. You can download Doom 1, Doom 2, Ultimate Doom, and Plutonia Experiment from the game menu.

DOOM sucks. Has always sucked and will always suck. Its nothing more than a 3-D engine demo. Can't believe the groves of sheep that consider it a great game...

The T-Mobile G1, and all Android powered phones actually, already have a Doom application. Two of them actually. One is free, and is actually quite good. With every release, it gets more stable, with better framerates. Even supports importing custom WADs.

Already have the jailbreak app vesrion, and it's not so good in terms of controls. Then again, nothing on the iTouch/Phone is. I really don't think this is going to work out, the controls will be too akward. The iPhone just isn't meant for this kind of game (Or any game for that matter, in my humble opinion, other than point and clicks.). However, there's a good chance the jailbreak app version will support the soon-to-come iControlPad, so I'd go for that one if you already have the game WADs

So has Doom became the most ported game ever yet? It's been on practically every major system officially since it's release.
Not too sure on how it would control or how hard it's be on the eyes with such a tiny screen, but it should be just as good as it ever was. There's a good reason Doom is still so popular over a decade after it's release.
