Hey, UFC fighters. Over here. Would you like to avoid appearing in a video game without getting fired? We have the solution for you: Stop cutting your hair. According to Fight! magazine (via 5thround.com), UFC fighter Clay Guida was cut from UFC 2009: Undisputed because his trademark shaggy locks were causing clipping problems and creating issues with collision detection. THQ supposedly offered Guida money to trim his hair so that he could be included in the game, an offer Guida seemingly refused.
We applaud Guida for not (essentially) selling his hair to THQ, but come on, he had to be cut because of his hair? Hasn't hair been in 3D fighting games since ... forever? Couldn't they have given his in-game model a headband or something? The mind reels ....

I'd be scared of how much more damaging his hair could have been considering the game has enough collision detection and clipping issues already. Sure its not game breaking in its current state, but its pretty noticeable (at least the collision).

Funny because I haven't had any lag or clipping issues with the game. I think Yuke's did a fantastic job with the game. In fact, after playing UFC Undisputed and then trying the demo for Fight Night Round 4 I thought Fight Night was antiquated in comparison.

I haven't noticed any clipping issues, but the collision detection can be a little poor. It's great when it comes to body parts interacting, but it often counts something as a hit when I wasn't within an inch of the guy's face.

I suppose I misinterpreted the article so I apologise.
What I do notice though, is that a lot of the times I've played with my friends, is when we both attack at very similar times, the game has trouble. Either the person who went first with a quicker attack, gets hit instead or that animations go halfway and then go back to standing animation. Hard to describe.
Though the game is still awesome :)

The consoles focussed on raw power still can't do convincing hair? I know decent water is still beyond most developers. It seems like hard work, and it probably is, but it's the little things like that that really bring me into the game world. Grass swaying in the wind, the odd unexpected reflection, glorious rain. A little work can go a long way.
Though, THQ taking shortcuts does not surprise me in the slightest.

Like YOU said, its a wrestling game. It's not technical or anything. Look at the punches they throw in that game. They dont care about hit boxes when making those games.Thats hilarious that you would compare a fake entertainment show game to a real sport game.

What part do you not understand? An MMA game, which is based off of a REAL sport with REAL judges and a point scoring system requires way more detail and precision than a wrestling game which is fake with no need for precision hit boxes. You do realize that in the UFC game you can go to a decision right?

Wrestling being "fake" and MMA being "real" have nothing to do with this argument, so stop proving a point that isn't even being debated, FenixKnight. The fact is, both are performed by real people, and therefore, when you're playing them on the Xbox or whatever, it needs to look like real people doing it. What is so damn hard to understand about that? Whether or not one game needs a scoring system or a more precise hit detection system, whether or not MMA's punches are real and wrestling's are pulled has absolutely nothing to do with the issue here.

It's a stupid argument. WWE being fake has no bearing on the production of the game. Both games are fake imitations of their real life counterparts. They both have to deal with hit boxes and clipping in the same manner. Street Fighter is fake, so are going to argue that hit boxes and clipping don't matter in that series? I'm sure there are plenty of fans of the series that would disagree.
The argument you're trying to make is the same as trying to claim that hit boxes and clipping don't matter in a game like Unreal Tournament compared to CoD4 because UT is "fake"... "Yeah, who cares if the bullets actually hit you?".
Sorry, but it's utterly ridiculous argument to make. I'm honestly surprised you would attempt this. You're clearly letting your feelings about MMA vs Pro Wresting get in the way of rational thought here.

You guys are bascially saying its the same thing when its clearly not! Yukes themselves not being able to do it just yet proves it. The only argument thats stupid here is yours. Get over it!

I don't know why they chose not to do it, but I don't see why it would have anything to do with MMA being real and WWE being fake. That's not even logical. THEY ARE BOTH FAKE BECAUSE THEY ARE BOTH GAMES. It's really as simple as that. Can you give me a single logical reason why hair clipping in WWE would have to be handled differently than in an MMA game? I'd love to hear it because I can't think of a reason.
Look at it this way, you could make a wrestling game that was a much more technically proficient fighter than an MMA game or vice versa. It just depends on how much time and money your are willing to invest into each. As for my feeling about each, I don't give a shit. I don't watch either one. But I can see what it obvious here.

I think Fenix has a point that an MMA or boxing game is going to require more precise and accurate strikes than a wrestling game. The reason being is that they are real combat sports so they have to be as accurate as possible to real life.
Yuke's Osaka has made both games and presumably similar technology would be used for both of them. So, it's logical to say that the technology was there and there is a different reason that they weren't able to recreate long hair in an MMA game but can in a wrestling game.
The only plausible reasons they weren't able to do the long hair thing is because 1. They are lazy (not likely with how much detail went into the game already), 2. They didn't have the technology (false) and 3. Because they needed to have an accurate representation of the strikes and someone getting punched in the hair in an MMA game is unacceptable where as it's probably not as big of a deal in a wrestling game (most plausible).
The only thing that makes sense to me is that they wanted it to be an accurate representation of the sport and not have the player selecting a guy with long hair to have an unfair advantage.
The question is would it be acceptable for one game (wrestling) and unacceptable for another (mma)? For me, the only answer that makes sense is that one is a real combat sport that is a simulation and the other is a more styleized arcade like form of representation. Besides, a much larger portion of wrestlers have long hair than MMA fighters because of the tactical disadvantage of having said hair in an MMA match.
The reason they didn't include long hair is the same reason they didn't have the unorthodox stance in this iteration: It would have messed with the hit detection and caused an unfair advantage. I'm sure they will have plenty of time to work this type of stuff out before the next game and probably as a patch in this title.
I'm going to side more with Fenix on this argument unless someone can give some better insight as to why it's possible in one and not the other.
If someone has a reason thats more plausible I would love to hear it.
Thats just my 2 cents.

"THEY ARE BOTH FAKE BECAUSE THEY ARE BOTH GAMES."
Are they? I didn't know that, thanks for the heads up.
I bet theres just one huge hitbox on the wrestling games characters heads. Why? Because its fricken wrestling!!! There are no hooks, jabs, superman punches, uppercuts, headkicks, elbows, ETC!! All which require the fighter have a different reaction. In other words its easier to program for a wrestling game BECAUSE its fake and they don't do all that technical stuff. Theres no need for a top notch collision system like a UFC or FNR4 game requires.
Just stop talking already, fuck!

I just don't see why you would have to have the hair as part of the hit box. Seems like you would not want it to be part of the hit box in both games... after all, you can hit my hair all day long and not do me one bit of harm.
Anyway, I haven't played either game, so I don't know how long hair behaves in any of the wrestling games. I'm curious now though.

OK, I relent. Maybe the are treating them differently as far as hit boxes go. But they shouldn't be. Hitting someone's hair shouldn't be a "hit" in an MMA game or a wrestling game... that's just dumb. So if that is what Yuke's has done with wrestling games then, yes, they are just plain lazy and it came back to bite them in the MMA game.

It's basically back behind their ears and necks with their face out in the open. The hair never hangs forward. I suppose they couldn't do this with Guida because he never has his hair back like that except for the postfight interviews. Its usually always hanging all up in his face covering his ears and neck. Huge hit box FTL...

Stop. Please. Undertaker and HHH's hair is not like Guida's. If you read the article, Guida wouldn't compromise with his hairstyle. Therefore he wasn't going to make it slick back or cut it. There is no one on the WWE roster in the games that have hair like Guida Guida's hair is something that has never been dealt with.
On another note, since I won't be able to do a double hammer fist for ground and pound, I won't be buying this game. Lol.

Wow...hair? Really? Why not just make the hair and have it not be part of the hit-box seriously. Sure it causes the hair to be like Kat from X-Men as it goes through everything like how we see Batman's cape in most of his games (lots of superhero references for some reason) but shouldn't that work? I think it should.

I would just say that it's the first MMA game from Yuke's (THQ) and all things considered they did a fantastic job. The overall UFC experience as well as the fighting styles are all there in their most accurate state. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the game is the depth and complexity of the control mechanics. I certainly wouldn't call it mediocre but thats just my opinion. Honestly it's probably my GOTY so far in 2009.
I have a couple of minor complaints but not anything that has ruined the experience. I think they could have sped up the gameplay a tad (not a lot but a little more) and there are also a few minor glitches that need to be patched up in online play. The most glaring glitch is when you or an opponent will be transitioning to another position on the ground and the animation will continuously loop until the round ends and neither fighter can break away. It doesn't happen often but it's happened a handful of times.

Lot's of hate going around this morning for one of the better games this year and the most accurate representation of the sport I've seen to date including the previous UFC game and the Pride FC game.
Anyone who hasn't heard of Clay Guida probably isn't anything more than a casual MMA fan at best. The dude is a good fighte and is scheduled to fight Diego Sanchez at the ultimate fighter finale here soon. The winner of that fight will be next in line fo a title shot against the winner of Penn/Florian.
I can't say that I'm bummed by this news as I'm not a big fan of the "carpenter" Guida. It's funny because every fight he has during the intermission he always lets out these mammoth belching burps than cause tremors world wide. He is certainly the fighting pride of the Guida family as his brother Jason is constantly overweight and out of shape for his fights.

Yeah I'll play you tonight.
I haven't done a CAF yet in the game. I might mess around with that today/tonight at some point. I mostly have just been doing player matches with my buddies but I've done maybe 10 or 11 ranked matches and I'm about .500 +/- 1. You might just kick my butt but I'll give it a good run.
WHo do you like to use best in the game? From my experience most people like playing as Forrest Griffin because he has the best all around stats and is strong in every category. When it comes to LHW I think Evans is probably one of the better fighters because like Griffin he is good (not great) in every category. However, my favorite fighters to play with are (you probably know) Rampage & BJ Penn. GSP is another one who has great rating but for some reason I always get my ass kicked when I play with him. Go figure.
But, I will for sure be on tonight and we can go at it ... probably some time around 9:00 CST or a little later .... send me a message and let me know when you'll be online.
