The last Sonic the Hedgehog racing game (not counting the flying snowboard business) was Sonic R on the Saturn, back in 1997. Sega has revived the idea of a Sonic racing game in the form of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, adding some friends from other Sega games, including Super Monkey Ball's AiAi the monkey and Samba de Amigo's Amigo the ... other monkey.
Unlike Sonic R, this time Sonic and pals race in vehicles -- and unlike the Game Gear's Sonic Drift, those vehicles aren't just karts, but take various forms, from planes to sports cars to bananas. Sonic, however, does not have a Smart. Too bad!
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing will be out on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS in 2010. The announcement doesn't mention PC, but there's a "PC DVD" logo at the end.
Sonic Adventure 2 + High Speed stages (ala Unleashed) - treasure hunting and mechs - every playable character from the franchise but Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles = winner
...Seriously though, Chao made that game infinitely replayable. Sega is a fool for not realizing this.
Sonic the Hedgehog 06 was basically Sonic Adventure 3... Why would you want SEGA to use the name Sonic Adventure 3 when the first and second ones were so different from eachother in so many ways anyways? Unleashed is good, does that count?
Come on. You and I both love the shit outta Metroid Prime. Best game ever, for sure. It's moody, it controls splendidly, it provides a feel I haven't gotten from any game since (including the other two Primes), etc
Sonic Adventure 2 is not to be mentioned in the same breath, yo
It's a fun game despite its flaws, but its flaws are too numerous for it to be placed anywhere near the near-perfect games out there on the greatness scale.
cant really call this a diddy kong racing ripoff since that only used characters from the rare/donkey kong universe, but i think its in a racing league on its own, since it took the Smash Bros idea and brought the sega universe together for this one "going to be" kick ass racer, i've been waiting for something of this nature for my ps3, and i finally recieved, thanks sega!...ps SHENMUE 3 FTW!!!!
Sonic Riders 1 on the Gamecube was decent. Then I wanted to get the 2nd one I was like "Cool Wii exclusive" Then ?I saw the scores and I was scared. o.o
It might earn my interest if you can race as Vectorman or Sketch Turner. I do love though how SEGA has to make sure Sonic is in the title. They can't just call it SEGA All-Star Racing. There's no way it would sell as many copies.
We have tons of realistic racing games, and a lot of new ones are still coming. More games like Mario Kart are always nice... let just hope that this Sonic turns to be a decent game.
Joystiq you forgot to mention that this is by SUMO DIGITAL, the company responsible for F1 2009 and OutRun, among others. This means it will be AWESOME.
I hate to disagree with a fellow PD fan, But other than those two above average games, Sumo's record is not good. The Tennis game was garbage wrapped up in nostalgic memories.
This will be another blatant and shameless rip off of a better game.
Much as I'd still like to see Sega try to correct the course Sonic has taken recently, this looks kind of fun. If it reviews decently, I might give it a try.
Also, Toejam & Earl better be drivers in this game.
