The last Sonic the Hedgehog racing game (not counting the flying snowboard business) was Sonic R on the Saturn, back in 1997. Sega has revived the idea of a Sonic racing game in the form of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, adding some friends from other Sega games, including Super Monkey Ball's AiAi the monkey and Samba de Amigo's Amigo the ... other monkey.
Unlike Sonic R, this time Sonic and pals race in vehicles -- and unlike the Game Gear's Sonic Drift, those vehicles aren't just karts, but take various forms, from planes to sports cars to bananas. Sonic, however, does not have a Smart. Too bad!
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing will be out on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS in 2010. The announcement doesn't mention PC, but there's a "PC DVD" logo at the end.
Being one of the six people who have actually PLAYED Sonic games in the last ten years, I can honestly say that Sonic games have NOT sucked (Sonic '06 was the low point because of all the bugs and control issues) and I will be buying this game.
Those who say that Sonic games suck just haven't actually played recent Sonic games. I loved Sonic Heroes. I liked the Werehog stages from Sonic Unleashed. I beat Sonic '06, and it was good (would have been the best Sonic game since the Genesis had they allowed for more dev time to work out the control issues). So, if you have only based your opinion of Sonic games off of the idiotic reviews that always follow, kindly shut up. You have no idea.
