Right around half of them, is my guess...

You guys can talk all the crap you want about failures, but I would say that shows even more evidence towards people's love and loyalty towards their Xbox 360. Since launch I'm on my 3rd system (1 was warrantied), but you know what, I can't live without it and there are millions of people out there that have the same feeling. That's quite an accomplishment by Microsoft that they can create a system that people love so much, that multiple failures keeps people coming back.

And you "guys" can continue to blindly accept faulty merchandise, all the while claiming loyality as the reason.

In my eyes, that makes you a sheep.

But hey, if you want to continue to support Microsoft's deliberate sponging of the consumer, by all means, continue on. I am sure their PR department appreciates the inflated numbers due to repeat buys.

As much as Sony fanboys dont want to hear it, Xbox 360 is a fun system to play on. Its no wear near perfect unit like the SNES but has proven itself to the gaming community that its worth having. Nothing is perfect and nothing ever will be. So for now I say congrats to MS for just not giving up and hopefully there next unit wont frak up from RRoD.

Sony is also having a good year as well with growth in alot of areas granted not the huge leap that everyone would love to see but Sony is far from behind.

What I really love is when people rag all over the 360's RROD problems and then deny that the old-style PS2 ever had issues...

Not mine. It's 6 months old and last night it started freezing whenever my hard drive is connected. Nothing like having a gaming machine that just up and breaks after having it for half a year. Good job, Microsoft.

I understand the 360 is used by a ton of people and has great games, but what I don't understand is how RRoD is "OK" with the users. When I had my first RRoD, I got rid of it and bought a PS3 a couple years back. Why do people thinks its ok for a system to break down so much?

Im not trying to start a flame war. I just want some well rounded honest opinions.

I guess it's because Microsoft is cool about their return policy. When my 360 crapped out it was replaced with in 2 weeks. Had they asked ME to pay for repairs I would have chucked the thing at Bill Gates head and purchased a PS3.

I know I don't speak for all 360 owners, however I hung on to mine because of the enormous catalog of great games and the great online community.

Well, I'm pretty sure it's not "okay" with anybody. But, you buy into your team, and you support it through good and bad...or until it pisses you off enough to jump ship. Like I'm a Cavs fan, but those kids are pissing me off something serious! But, I'll still tell a Lakers fan that Kobe can eat a fat one.

Sorry. Playoffs.

How long has that policy been active? I could have sworn they wanted you to pay like 50 bucks for it back in early 07. I could be wrong. I see your point though. If you already spent the money on a 360 and are able to get it repaired for free then thats not too bad. As long as it didn't happen on a monthly bases.

I hear ya Jack, that's a fair question.

I agree that the failure rate is atrocious. But I also think that as of right now, it has the best games available, for me at least, and I just enjoy the hell out of the console itself. I have gone through 3 already but I haven't paid for anything. It's frustrating to say the least, but I do love my 360 and use it every single day.

With that being said, I don't know what Nintendo does or how they build their consoles, but I have never had one single problem with any system. I have had each and every Nintendo console from the start, including the Wii, and I STILL use my original NES and Super Nes to this day. Works perfectly.

When its working its a fun console that offers a lot. Ours get used quite a bit and I wouldn't chuck my library of 100 or so games as well as the console because it breaks and has to go in for repairs for 2 weeks. I wouldn't just throw my hands in the air if my other consoles broke either. Hissy fits don't do much to make the situation better.

For me, I guess I have always had rotten luck with many electronic devices. iPod, PS2, Cable modem, router, my first wide screen TV (RCA 42" Tube), my car, magic bullet blender, several PC components, refrigerator... the list can go on.

Since I paid top dollar for my 360 and Microsoft has a good warranty in place, I just drop it in the mail and 2 weeks later I have it back and working. This happened once with my Pro unit (DVD Tray) and once with my Elite (E74 error). Now they work fine.

I guess I am not a "Hardcore" gamer so not having my system for a couple weeks doesn't cause me to have fits of sleeplessness or have me shaking like a junkie desperate for a fix. I put it through some long gaming sessions (8 straight Hours online in GRAW, 72 hour mode in Dead Rising) so it isn't an incompetent machine.

As long as Microsoft doesn't charge me to have their defective hardware fixed, then I can deal with it. Of course I would prefer solid hardware, but I am a realist the knows that things break. PC's say hello, and my 2 PS2's (RIP) say hi as well.

Oh, and for the haters, I am buying a PS3 soon. I love playing on the system at my friends house. I will get one either when the price drops, or if the next 2 game bundle packs in 2 solid Sony exclusive titles. Not so much for the Wii though, maybe if I impregnate someone.

1. Are there failures? Yes.
2. Are the online features above and beyond the competition, making the 360 the best console with online capabilities? Yes.

Does the distraction of #2 make the bitter pill of #1 easier to swallow? Yes, for me at least. (I'm on console #4.)

That's why.
It may be made shoddy, but when it works, it's a beautiful thing.
I flip flop between playtime on my 360 and Ps3 (meanwhile my Wii remains dusty) however the difference between Xbox Live and the PSN is night and day. I used to be all "I refuse to pay for Live now that I have the PSN also"...yeah, that went away real quick and I re-upped for Live Gold again.

Also, Congrats to the Joystiq boards for not turning this post into an all out (stupid) console fanboy flame war. Every reply (so far) was thought out, explained well, and civil. I always expect the least and you all should be congratulated; especially you, PSN:JACKOFNOTRADES85 , for asking the question in a way that didn't get anyone riled up.

Of course, grade school hasn't been let out for the day yet so we shall see...

They only count the ones sold to stores, if yours XBox was repaired 11 times it still counts has one, now if they released the number of Xbox that were produced at factory's maybe their number would close to the WII :). or maybe not given the reports of refurbished XBox's

If you have money to burn is a good solution :) besides it's a good media center so some people probably have more than one at the house, the same goes for the PS3 even more do to the fact they play blue rays, but I imagine that this has a small impact on the overall number. But a number with the number of households that have a X360 or a PS3 would be interesting for comparison

In the darkest (or reddest) days of the RRoD, it was 33% failure rate, if we were generous and stretched that rate across all 30 million, it would be an additional 10 million, and still not enough to surpass Wii

Yes I was exaggerating a bit :) but thinking about it now a bit your number is probably very high also, they reported a 1 billion dollars in loss to make up the the RRoD error if they had produce an excess of 10 Million X360 I would guess it cost more than that.

Didn't they put aside something like 1.2billion dollars for the RROD warranty extensions? If Microsoft pays $100 for every console they have to repair they set aside enough money for 12million units. Sounds like they knew a lot of xbox 360s were broken pieces of shit.

Not quite as much as Microsoft themselves might like, but its the best performance for a 2nd-place console since the Genesis, showing Microsoft's aggressive ability to grab marketshare.

Really, they would have dominated this generation if it weren't for Nintendo. 360 is the closest spiritual successor to the PS2 in its attempts to really try and be the one-stop center for all gaming needs. They're playing the old game of console wars as well as it is possible to do

"Microsoft also notes that since launching the NXE (New Xbox Experience), Xbox Live membership has jumped 136 percent" -- that would be because the interface is ugly as hell when the xbox is not signed in to xbox live!

That's my biggest complaint about NXE, the blade system was about the system (games, video, music etc.) the NXE isn't about the system it's about sales. That's fine when integrated well, but it's so obvious on the 360 it becomes annoying.

As a Nintendo fanboy, I'm actually really glad to see the XBOX selling this well. I think good competition is the best thing that can happen for gamers. I hope the PS3 continues to sell more and more units as well.

Agreed. The 360 was/is a fun system to play on, but so is the PS3. With all that said, no one should endure 5 RROD's in an 18 month period such as what I experienced.

So, no. I will not congratulate Micrsoft on 20 million 360 sales, way to many people I know have purchased 2, 3, and 4 systems.

They didn't seem to care about my issues, so why should I? (Oddly enough, they cared once I cancelled my 2 Live accounts.)

No offense to the writer but honestly nearly all of them are working except the ones owned by morons. Somewhere along the line no matter how it's done the 360 will end up back at Microsoft, refurbished and used to replace a RROD console that will be repaired or sent in to be refurbished and sold at a discount. There isn't some pile of unused broken Xbox 360's like some of you moronically think. There is someone who can turn those into a profit and by god they are.

Most all game traders will take broken 360s and repair them or purchase them from you and send them to be refurbished at a warehouse and sold in stores in a new refurbished labeled box or as used.
