I'm all for another choice when it comes to games, as long as it doesn't come with an Apple price tag and locked down policies.

I want to point out that the XBox 360 is "locked down" as much as any Apple device, software DRM and hardware-wise, but yet, it's an amazing gaming experience. So I can't really buy that argument.

I'm an Apple fan but I don't think this will happen, it just seems like too much to bother with. Hey, who knows though...

How are Apple's policies any different than [your favorite console MFG]? I mean I realize that compared to other computer makers and portable music device makers they have a pretty closed universe... but console games have always been that way. There's a strict set of hoops one must jump through to even have the right to develop for a system (seriously, just TRY to get an SDK on your own), let alone all of the hoops that must be jumped through before publishing, etc... With the 360 even the hardware is locked down and tightly controlled. How is Apple's method of doing business different?

I totally agree with vexx on that. I'm fine with apple jumping in, but they better not come with their elitist higher priced ideals here. The gaming market is difficult to penetrate too.. It took ms 1 failed console to get it right, and billions of dollars wasted. Knowing apple, they want it to be an instant success.

NO!!!! I can handle handle them charging people out the ass for basic Media Devices, but not this. An apple console would basically be much like the Wii yet somehow still cost the same as a PS3.

Eh, they can try... but I don't think they can compete. They are too strict about content, they charge too much, and they like too keep too firm a grasp on things for a large number of third parties to get on board. Of course, EA / Ubi would start producing shovelware for the system, but aside from that, I wouldn't expect them to have much success.

Is what I'm referring to. Their accessories cost through the roof, also dlc content pricing, they restrict content from XBL mainly user generated.

I should have been more specific.

I would say yes to an Apple console being a good idea.

Even if i never buy it, someone will, and that would be good because there will be more diversity. It would definitely be a good thing for gamers everywhere.

Also, hells yes to dreamcast 2!

What if Apple just buys Sega outright? They'd get the rights to the Dreamcast name and the ability to fire the entire Sonic Team for making crappy games recently.

That was an entirely different Apple though. Apple ca. 1987-1997 rarely made good decisions, and as bad as PiPPiN is, it was far from their worst mistake of that era.

I think today's Apple is most certainly qualified to release a quality product in the gaming sector. Whether or not they should is the real debate here.

Personally, I don't understand why you're so enthralled with the idea of an Apple game console, cuteSAVAGE. The idea just doesn't make sense.

Apple was relatively obscure until they finally landed a good product with the iPod. Since then, the Mac has increased only slightly in popularity, and they've launched a relatively successful phone. Much of their latest success is owed to Steve Jobs, but unfortunately for Apple, they no longer have him at the helm, and from the looks of it, I doubt they will in any great capacity ever again.

So now there is a great question of whether they'll be able to continue the momentum without their visionary leading them. I tend to think they won't, but the success of the iPod / iTunes store will keep people from turning on them too quickly.

But my point is that everything they touch is not gold, and just because they are successful in the MP3 player market, and somewhat in the phone market, does not mean they would fare well in the game console market. It's an illogical step, and historically, unless Apple beats other companies to the punch, they have a terrible time making inroads on other companies' markets. So in my opinion it's a bad idea, and barring any blind fanboysim on your behalf, you should see it the same way.

@ Marty - Personally, I don't see where you get the idea that I'm enthralled with the idea of an Apple game console.

I may be coocoo for the house of Macintosh, but I'm not a fan of them furthering their position in video games. They certainly have the capacity to do so, now more than they ever have. I'd like to see them keep gaming a distant second/third on their agenda, and not push it much further than they have already (downloadable game apps for existing product lines - iPhone, iPod, and maybe Apple TV / OS X).

I'm just trying to be a voice of reason here.

@Marty

"Apple was relatively obscure until they finally landed a good product with the iPod. "
-They weren't obscure. People knew about Macs, they just didn't sell well in the 90's.

Macs were NEVER like Amiga, SUN or Tandy. THOSE are obscure.

"the Mac has increased only slightly in popularity"
-Excuse me? Their marketshare has increased several fold since then. People talk about Macs and Apple way more than ever these days.

"somewhat in the phone market"
-OMG, go to a mall and count the iPhones.

"historically, unless Apple beats other companies to the punch, they have a terrible time making inroads on other companies' markets."

The iPod came into a Market that was already saturated with MP3 players.
It was a success. It came in. it dominated

The iPhone came into a market that already had smartphones.
It was a success. it came in. it dominated.

There were tons of other non-ms computers on the market before the Mac.
Apple is still around and thriving while the others were smashed to dust long ago.

Hm? There's like 40,000 Apps on the App Store.

Most of the casual games are under 5 bucks. Put the pipe down.

Apple's just going to put out cheaper iPhones/iPods, then allow them to interface wirelessly with AppleTV (which will get a big Software Update for Gaming, etc)

Obviously.

I don't know if I'd be a first year adopted of a new Apple Console. I learned that lesson with the Sega Saturn. As stated in early posts, I would also need an affordable price and quality, tangible software to back it up.
