THQ has officially confirmed work on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, yet another game set against the backdrop of Games Workshop's gritty tabletop universe. Relic has again been handed developer duties on the title, though unlike Dawn of War, the console-focused Space Marine will be an action RPG that lets players control individual units through a "narrative-driven story campaign and in wide-scale online battles."
In development for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it's unclear what ties, if any, the project has to the leaked Space Marine footage that made the rounds late last year. However, judging from this IGN-hosted trailer, the game certainly looks to keep more with 40K's combat-heavy fiction when it eventually decides to chainsword retail shelves.

holy shit im pretty sure some of that was gameplay! AUUGGGHHHHHH I CANT WAIT TO PLAY THIS! I just hope you get to choose which marine you are, I'd always preferred the idea of a Gears style cover thing, lugging around a massive plasma cannon or heavy bolter and tearing shit down, but if you could switch from squadmate to squadmate that'd be incredible. Fucking sweet character designs too

I can't see the vid yet, but I definitely would like the choice between legions.
I haven't played the minis game much, but I love the world and books (yeah, they're fluff, not real hard-sci-fi... but pulp is fun), so I'm digging this announcement. DOW and DOW2 were freaking awesome.
Of course, I'm partial to the Orks (dem's da boyz, ya dun' mess wif 'em) and the Imperial Guard (Commissar Cain!) myself, but those wouldn't make as cool a game as the Marines do.

Legions? Death Guard or Emperor's Children (for the noise marines) for me.. failing that... Maybe Dark Angels or one of their second founding, Like Angels of Vengence..
Hoping we see some 'Nids, maybe Relic can do them justice.. they'd be awsome for a Horde/Survivor mode..

In the Emperors name.
This could be fun... in my opinion it's gotta go less Action game, more Strategy with a very deep RPG character building element... Yeah that'd be hot.

Death to your false emperor. Death to you and your RPG centric ways...I will build a hole in my yard, drain you of your blood and call upon Tzneetch,Slaanesh and the god of Decay Nurgle....A thousand screams of agony bellowing from every orifice of your mangled flesh will tear the very fabric of the warp. And all will know...THQ will focus on the brutal and truely chaotic and epic nature of Warhammer. Still will most likely have RPG elements though...I predict they will do something similar like they did in Dawn of War where your leader gathers upgrades and the sort. DOW2 also showed that individualization with the series improved. It can only go good from there.

I agree an RPG could be incredible, especially if it had character creation and morality choices. Your commander tells you to destroy this entire village of heretics, but you find some of them are actually devout imperial citizens and you have to decide to rebel against your commander or something. Personally as long as they give me the ability to customize my armor and choose my weapons I'll be all over this game

Space Marine existed in science fiction novels way before 40K, but you do have to admit that the modern concept of what a Space Marine had the bar set by Games Workshop. So then, why has the only decent 40K in recent years been the RTS? There should be many more attempts to translate this property into video games because it is a rich, vast, diverse, and extremely well established world with plenty of popularity. I never played 40K Firewarrior because the reviews were horrible. Seems to me that THQ has been squandering the license so far with only one series of games for 40K. Yeah, an RTS seemed the logical way to go for a 40K game, but there are so many other potential games that could be made.

I played 40K: Fire Warrior despite the poor reviews (and cuz I found it in the bargain bin for $5). It was actually a competent shooter, though hard as hell at points, a bit repetitive, and completely unbelievable in terms of combat (one lone Tau warrior taking down multiple Space Marines, Ultramarines, Chaos Space Marines, etc? Yeah right...)
Now if they'd just remake 40k Space Hulk as a real-time, online, co-op, tactical shooter...I'd be in heaven.

Space Hulk was almost two decades ago and it was an EA game. I'm talking about how THQ has been dragging their heels with more 40K based games. It is a license with so much potential outside the RTS genre.

This could be fantastic if it's Gears of Space Marines, a horde mode with waves of Orks and 'Nids would make my day.
However it could just be Dynasty Warriors: 40k, and the less said about that the better...

if it is the same game as the one that gameplay demo awhile back was about, it seems more like Space Marine May Cry

The more 40k games the better!
While I love stuff like Gears of War, I'm sitting there wishing the game was a REAL 40k game instead of an excellent knock off. The chainsaw guns from 40k back in the 80s were awesome, and when Gears added them to their guns I was all excited, but their lore and fluff just doesn't match that of 40k.
You gotta admit, the fluff of 40k offers endless amounts of opportunities to games being made. Firewarrior was actually quite fun, if not miserably hard in a few areas. I think the reason it got slagged so much was because you played a freakin' TAU the entire game. Goofy.
