EA's downloadable Battlefield 1943 will take a Noby Noby Boy-esque -- albeit more violent -- cooperative approach to the release of its "Coral Sea" map. The bonus battlefield will unlock when the player communities on both Xbox and PS3 reach 43,000,000 kills each. To be clear: that's individually on each platform and not an accumulated total. So, if there's disproportionate player-base on one console, it's going to hold everyone back.
Coral Sea is allegedly designed to "showcase the intense battle in the skies, offering an all-new Air Superiority game mode." Battlefield will release "this summer" according to the latest press release. Last we were told it would release in June for $15, and the PC version is still scheduled for September. (There's no word on if PC players will have to complete a similar challenge to unlock Coral Sea, but we're looking into it.)
Update: An EA representative got back to us and said, "Yes, Coral Sea will release with the PC version."

It's not ppl on live you have to worry about, its the people on PSN that im concerned about. Xbox Live users will probably have this unlocked well before the PSN users do since there is much more of xbox install base

Don't worry about live members, it's the PSN players that are going to be slack.

Note I have both 360 and PS3 and if one is slacking more than the other I am going to have to start playing this on the other so to help out the slowbies.

Pretty damn clever, if I do say so myself. I want to say something witty, but uh... I can't. Hrm.

And so the breaking story streak ends. Someone write down 6 as the current record.

No, both console bases need to reach that level to unlock it as a whole. So they have assured that fanboys of one base or another will be able to scream at the other for not getting to 43,000,000 kills in time. That was what they were explaining above.
If PSN meets the 43,000,000 kills then they can't play the map till the Live users get 43,000,000 kills and vice versa.

Wow that's even worse. Talk about throwing fuel on the fire...
You bastards on the 'other' console better get lots of kills! Or you could just run out there and die as much as possible. Every little bit helps...

As I understand it, we don't have to wait for BOTH communities to get 43 million kills. Once your community hits 43 million kills, it unlocks it on your platform.
Doesn't that sound far more logical / closer to the source wording?

No...
"The WWII Coral Sea map will be unlocked when the multiplayer community achieves 43M kills on Xbox Live and the same number on PlayStation(R)Network"
I don't think there's any gray area here, both systems need to get 43M before anyone gets to play the new map.

They better do the same for those PC'ers cause that's just fair play.
If only 500K copies sell for Xbox360 on launch, we'll unlock it by day two. Everyone would just have to get 86 kills each. Which at 10 kills a game, you'll be done by weekend. Good luck PSN.

No, if using the 500k copies number 43 MILLION would be reached in like two hours.
It's battlefield, deaths come by the truck full.
It probably won't sell 500k by the first weekend though.

500,000 x 86 = 43,000,000.
I can earn over 100 kills a night on Battlefield: Bad Company alone, and I'm not even the best guy playing most nights. My squad can usually pull a stead 45-50 kills a game.

Which gave the people that love that a place to go away from the rest of the maps.
In theory anyway.

It has been re-said a few times but it looks like some people are not grasping what they are saying.
"The bonus battlefield will unlock when the player communities on BOTH Xbox and PS3 reach 43,000,000 kills EACH. "
Not that big of a number, one console might reach it before the other but the wait time between I estimate to be minimal (read a week or so). The First console to unlock it should be within the first couple of weeks of its release.

coral sea is not new... but cool that they are bringing it back in 43. if your really into dogfighting its a great map. my fondest memories involved getting shotdown in the middle of the map, parachuting onto one of the small islands, wandering around by myself using small arms fire against enemy planes, until one spotted me and did a low flyby to chew me up in their propellers.
i also remember ejecting somewhat away from the enemy ship, swimming/sneaking on board and rigging the runway with explosives :)
good times
