Head past the break for a trailer where some of the folks behind the game explain the new feature and what they hope it will mean for the future of Madden.
Madden NFL 10 to feature online co-op

If there's one thing football games lack nowadays, it's the feeling of comradery that comes from playing with teammates. When it's one person versus another person, the whole teamwork thing kind of gets thrown out the window. Well, no longer will you be forced to play online all alone, as EA has revealed that Madden NFL 10 will include online co-op gameplay for the first time on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Really? You were expecting something.....more? What's Madden every year? Roster updates and slight improvements of what was already there. Nothing ever remotely groundbreaking or new. Hell, they even one-upped themselves this year and took stuff out!

Seriously,
NFL2k1 had this. Why did it take EA so long to get here?
The NFL 2k series was so much better it hurts.

You mean to say that NFL 2K1 let you play with another person on your team online? Or on the same console? Because Madden does let you play with a teammate on the same console. Just so you know. Not that the 2K series wasn't better, I'm just confused as to what you're saying.

You've got that image backwards, Joystiq. I'm all-time QB.

It's back on PC? I thought they'd killed that port off.

Oh no, you missed that. They totally pulled a Brett Favre and unretired their PC Gaming Sports brand.

This is a great start, but now it needs to become 4v4 online play:
OFFENSE:
1 - Quarterback
2 - Running Back
3 - Wide Receiver
4 - Wide Receiver
DEFENSE:
1 - Linebacker
2 - Linebacker
3 - Cornerback (or Safety)
4 - Cornerback (or Safety)
Leave the lineman (and any other players) as AI. Anymore than 4 players on a team, and everyone will start bitching about getting the ball.

Or lag. I can't wait for those arguements to start up. It's laggy enough 1-v- sometimes.

Madden 2010 has become a buttong masher! Whoever can highlight the position they want to play at the start of each down gets it!

Why get rid of the Lineman? I personally always play as a DT/DE and would have no problem being a T/G/C and run blocking.

@J Snaz
I could see allowing to set up as a Tight-End, or any one of the position on the D-line; but a solid player-controlled O-line is just asking for madness, disorganization, and most likely, a lot of sacks. (not to mention "in-eligible player down field" penalties constantly!)

I envision the day where we have full 11 on 11 action! Just like J Snaz, I would totally be down with playing some O Line. Somebody's got make a hole for these RB's!

Problem is, online coop gives you your own camera behind your player, kind of in the 3rd person, but drawn back a bit. THey had an offline coop in '09 but it was a single cam and not that good.

Also, dirtier minds would suggest that the above image makes it look like your friend is trying to sneak up behind you and butt-rape.

This is pretty cool... I can now play co-op with my brother again. Just like we use to when we were little...Those were the good old days before jobs, wives and bills... probably not in that order...

Uhm... NHL has had 6 vs. 6 online play for 2 years now. NHL 09 was one of the best sports games released in years.

You should check out the latest versions of FIFA and NHL if you're looking for some co-op fun. Both soccer and hockey really lend themselves to this and both games have dedicated singe-player modes (as in, you control a single player with a chase camera). NHL 09 = best sports game ever, IMO.

I want a coop for the NFL superstar mode. I know it'll be tough to find o-line and fullbacks, but man it would be fun.
Anyway, I'll need to make sure to pick this up. Go Seahawks!

Didn't at least one of the 2k games on Dreamcast have that feature? Or was it only local? Uggh, I'm gettin' too old to remember all of this technical stuff.

But, can you plan co-op in franchise mode or just pickup games? That's the big question IMO. If my friend and I can play through a whole season or franchise cooperatively then that is awesome. If this is just for pickup games, then that is kind of "meh" IMO.

No Wii online play? What's the point of friend codes if games like this don't support them? It doesn't matter, I won't own a Madden or other sports game because they get old after the first 5 plays anyways. I can sit and play repetitive games for hours, just not sports games.

they should have had full co-op team on team years ago. I mean, isn't that the point of madden to strive for realism? so why not have as many people playing together as there is in a real foot ball game?
and to top it all off, if FPSs have been doing it since halo 2 (yes, I am sure there were games before that did online PvP but none are worth mentioning...that I can remember) so EA can't use "ZOMG LAYG" as an excuse.
