Review: Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete

For the uninitiated, Advent Children was an impossible-to-follow film that relied too much on the legacy of the Final Fantasy VII anthology. Advent Children Complete, surprisingly, pads the film to make it a far more accessible film than the original. Geostigma, the mysterious disease that plagues the citizens of this world, is humanized by newly added scenes surrounding Denzel, a child whose role becomes fleshed out in this director's cut. Through the eyes of Denzel, we can better understand the chilling effects of the disease, and the desperation of those that are infected with a seemingly incurable and lethal disease. The film's villains, Kadaj and company, stood out as two-dimensional leather-wearing freaks. The Complete cut makes their intentions, plans and outfits all the more obvious.
The two hour run time for the Complete gives director Tetsuya Nomura a better opportunity to explain the Geostigma, and he succeeds in humanizing Cloud. Yes, the blond haired hero is just as emo as ever, but Complete gives further insight into the character. Integrating footage from Crisis Core reminds the viewer of how much Cloud has gone through, and adds a necessary gravitas to the film. While lengthy, the new cut does something the original failed at -- make sense.
Although Complete is a largely improved film, it still suffers from many of the same problems that plagued the original. Nomura still has trouble pacing and sequencing these scenes, creating an unnecessary (and perhaps unintentional) ephemeral effect that makes the story difficult to follow. Much of the supporting cast falls victim to Nomura's "style over substance" mantra, with many characters relegated to being mere caricatures. In spite of all of Complete's improvements over the original, it's clear that Advent Children is still a very flawed, oftentimes unenjoyable, film.
Advent Children is almost four years old now, but the quality of the CG holds up remarkably well (a testament to how advanced Square Enix's rendering capabilities were back then). The newly rendered scenes look just as polished, if not more so; the additional blood and dirt added to characters during fights does make for a more visually compelling look. The quality of the Blu-ray transfer was impressive enough to make for a comfortable viewing experience at a theatrical screening. Videophiles, however, will notice that some scenes suffer from poor compression issues.
The English dub on the disc is competent, but purists will undoubtedly choose the Japanese language track with subtitles. While the English performances are more than adequate, the dub syncing is noticeably off at times. Perhaps the added resolution of the Blu-ray transfer makes the dubbing a bit more apparent.
The US version of Advent Children Complete won't include a demo of Final Fantasy XIII, unlike the Japanese release. It will, however, include a "special sneak peak" which we weren't privy to at the early screening. Ultimately, the quality of the film is what purchases must be based upon. Although ultimately a flawed film, Complete offers a far more enjoyable viewing experience over the original. The added visual fidelity added by Blu-ray, coupled with a more consistent story, may be enough for fans to pick up the disc. The Blu-ray will be available on June 2nd.

I wouldn't say the original was all that hard to follow/nonsensical, but I agree that it could have had a little better/clearer story line. It pretty much had me hook, line, and sinker (aside from the fact that FFVII was one of my favorite games ever... I traded a buddy my N64 for a month so I could get his PS1 and FFVII just to play) when, after a fight scene, you hear classic FF victory music which turns out to be someones ring tone.
Charlie_Six @ Jun 10th 2009 9:04PM
As someone who never played FF7 but watched the original cut of Advent Children, the film made no sense to me at all. I just admired the visuals and the fight scenes then said "What the heck just happened?" So this review is interesting.. I might have to check out the Complete one now.
Hotaru Tomoe @ Jun 15th 2009 4:43PM
Pretty much it boils down to this: Your enjoyment of the original Advent Children, and understanding of its plot, was related to how much you loved Final Fantasy VII. If you are someone like me, that still has the game and still plays it from time to time then most likely it made sense the first time you watched it. I had zero problems following the original AC. This new version is the strawberry on top of a very well iced cake, its insanely enjoyable, and makes me want to track down someone at Squaresoft and make them sit at a dev kit and remake the original VII with these graphics.
boltu222 @ May 29th 2009 9:21AM
IMO the visual quality of the film isn't that great... SE didn't do a great job of a HD conversion...
Thief @ May 29th 2009 11:18AM
You can tell that from a streaming vid over the internets?
The first part is supposed to look scratchy and low-quality.
boltu222 @ May 29th 2009 12:18PM
I have the Japanese blu-ray...
umm....hello??? @ May 29th 2009 9:23AM
awesome......too bad they left out the FFXIII demo. I'm still picking this up, though.
whowhatme @ May 29th 2009 12:58PM
awesome... too bad they left out the FFXIII demo, though. that was the only conceivable reason I would ever pay for this movie.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ May 29th 2009 9:25AM
I bought the Japanese version and I have to admit that the sound HD-ness disappointed me a little. Was quite flat IMHO. Image quality was amazing and crisp though.
DEEZNUTZ @ May 29th 2009 9:27AM
Fool me once...
Advent children was a POS movie, so I just can't see how this cut will make it smell any better. I'll stick with my memories of FFVII as a great game, and leave it at that.

5 words: She *lands* on a *wall*. That battle pretty much sealed the deal for this movie being awesome. Also, improbable motorcycle physics FTW.
DaveMcRae the Haiku Artist @ May 29th 2009 10:27AM
Yes, the fights were really amazing. Also, it had Yuffie in it. (yay).
BUT it was not the FF7 world I remembered from the game.
TheLionOfAzzalle @ May 29th 2009 9:28AM
Vii was the best FF followed by 10.
As for the movie I agree that the original was extremely hard to follow. Especially if you've never played the game before. Still though it looked beautiful and it had that factor that made you want to watch more to see what was going to happen.
Glad to see they fleshed it out though. i'll definitely be buying it when it drops.
Zerokku @ May 29th 2009 10:07AM
VII is the best huh?

I'm just going to leave this here >.>
nicolaskrul @ May 29th 2009 10:15AM
Sure zerokku, from an story perspective, it's the same old shit, based on an incredible game.
But it's not the story per se why i think people like it, but the whole way of presenting the story.
Same thing with the movie. Cloud is all acting emo, but that is because there is little depth into why he is being emo.
Roto13 @ May 29th 2009 2:41PM
It was the cutscenes. Now it's the nostalgia.
MarioSpitza @ May 29th 2009 7:34PM
I agree completely with Nicholas.
The similarity between FFVI and FFVII's story is uncanny, but ultimately, they're two completely different game. Terra and Cloud may have similar afflictions, but who here thinks they have the same personality? Is Barret supposed to be Locke? And so on.
Furthermore, I speak for myself, but I happen to like FFVII for its excellent gameplay. Its battle system is still my favorite RPG battle system to date.
Zombie Autopsy @ May 29th 2009 9:58AM
All i can say about this movie besdies the fact i was entertained and pleased with it is...it was 100 million times better than Final Fantasy Spirits Within
acefondu @ May 29th 2009 11:38AM
I liked both.
Roto13 @ May 29th 2009 2:43PM
The fact that The Spirits Within has "Final Fantasy" in the title makes no sense at all.
baby sea tuna @ May 29th 2009 9:59AM
I can't believe they didn't bother to include a localized demo for the Region 1 release. I'm sure a lot of work would have had to have gone in to include it, but that would have all but ensured that the people suckered in by the original DVD release would rebuy the Blu-Ray version. I mean, I'd have even considered it even though I hated Advent Children and haven't been impressed by an FF game since IX. Oh well, their loss...
snowleopard233 @ May 29th 2009 10:06AM
I enjoyed Advent Children solely based on its utterly eyeball-exploding fight scenes. Although the movie largely left out any use of material or magic, there was still a good amount of insane aerial fights. Who knew people could sword-fight on motorcycles?
However, the plot was dismal at best, feeling more like a dragged-on ending to the game than a competent continuation of the saga. Maybe the new scenes will add something, but I still feel the core components of the story are fundamentally dry. Still, if you want to see some of your favorite characters from the game do incredibly awesome and insane things, this is the film to watch.
deaftly @ May 29th 2009 10:06AM
No matter how much I love FF7, the newer games and this movie are a pile of SUCK
Sly (The Cake in fact, is NOT a lie) [PSN SniperChameleon] @ May 29th 2009 11:56AM
crisis core was great. the movie was mediocre. dirge of cerberus was... well, you all know.

I’ll second that. I wasn’t right for a week after seeing that awful flick.

"For the uninitiated, Advent Children was an impossible-to-follow film that relied too much on the legacy of the Final Fantasy VII anthology." - joystiq
Seriously? It wasn't created for those who didn't; play, love, live the Final Fantasy experience. This was for the fans who play through the game and spent countless hours playing, and replaying the game for what? The experience because it was truly the first RPG with a so in depth story that it made feel so alive it was amazing.
With that said I can say that I had no problem following the film and what was going on, which I am sure most FFVII fans felt the same. If you didn't play it, all the way through (and loved it) then of course the film isn't going to be for you. I feel a little bit of hatred for you now after this article. Not enough to keep from coming to this site thought =)
Shadow31 @ May 29th 2009 10:36AM
Honestly, I wholly agree with you. I mean, I found it easy to follow and I haven't even played through VII (though I read through the storyline, I just didn't have a PlayStation).
I would never assume someone who isn't into Final Fantasy, especially VII, to sit down and watch a movie that has Final Fantasy VII in the name! It is quite obvious it is geared to the fans.
Also, this is one of my favorite movies BECAUSE of the fight scenes. Who cares about the shallow story? In fact, the soundtrack was also epic...
DaveMcRae the Haiku Artist @ May 29th 2009 10:25AM
I am torn. I loved 7, but in the game characters WERE NOT able to fligh a mile high into the air. Why the visuals, sound and atmosphere of AC were amazing, I am still thinking the film changed the FF7 world for the worse. What was good about 7 was that it was not so typically japanese/mangasque. At some scenes in AC I thought "Goku is that you?".
Still amazingly good looking andc choreographed though.
Trippy Haps @ May 29th 2009 10:57AM
I can see where you're coming from. Not knowing much about the people who constructed the FFVII world, I wonder if they ever intended for their characters to be portrayed as so...intensely power.
If a game character is able to summon something along the lines of Ifrit or Shiva, though, I'm willing to suspend my perceptions of reality a little bit more and believe they can jump a mile iinto the air.
Over the top? Of course.
Satisfying? Definitely.
Speaking of Goku. If it weren't for Toonami and Dragonball Z, I wouldn't have the ((homewrecking)) anime addiction that I have now. Those exaggerated, explosive, cheesy, drawn-out-entirely-too-long battles will always remain a cherished bullet-point of my 2nd Favorite Hobby.
acefondu @ May 29th 2009 11:42AM
It's anime, and yes the characters in the game could fly to ridiculous heights. Don't tell me those limit breaks weren't ridiculous feats of strength.
doom saber @ Jun 9th 2009 1:45PM
@ Trippy Haps
There is no problem of characters jumpin for hundreds of feet if the actual game have areas where Cloud jumps like from one Iocation to another that is hundreds of feet away. However, a lot of the game has Cloud jumping from area to another that is around 3 feet apart. He cannot jump from one place to another like he does in the CGI film. If he could do such a feat, he wouldn't need Highwind since he can just jump from one continent from another.
I agree with DaveMc since l also have a probem with Cloud jumpin a hundred miles; it is so inconsistnent w/ the RPG to the point where it just contradicts it.
The film basically just fanservice to FFVII in my opinion.
TJF588 @ Jun 14th 2009 5:06PM
acefondu holds my view on this (or at least a similar view).
When do we see the AC characters jumping or otherwise moving something ridiculous? Fight scenes. This is just like in the game, where you motions could become highly overexaggerated, while out of battle it was still a close call for Tifa to jump a couple yards(?) onto a rope ladder.
This could even extend to one of the things changed in COMPLETE: battle wear. In FFVII (and most RPGs), the only sign of being beat up in battle is kneeling down or such when in critical HP or ailmented. Think of AC's Turks vs SHM battle. They skidded across a road and barely got dust on them, much less scuffed/frayed/torn clothing, and after the battle dragged on, they were hunched over, heavy breathing. If this isn't the same logic one sees in a typical RPG battle, then someone's a bit disconnected by graphical density.
Kdiggy @ May 29th 2009 10:45AM
I have it on DVD already. I really like the movie. If the Blu-ray included the demo, I would have pre-ordered it and bought it again. Sorry Square Enix, No demo = no buy.
Eric E @ May 29th 2009 11:34AM
I have it on UMD (yes UMD) and i wasn't going to pick it up b/c it lacked the demo but honestly, i dont care.
I saw the demo, no difference if i was playing or watching it. Not worth the extra $ to import it and not have english subs.
Its still cool to show off the graphics on BluRay on a Nice big 1080p.
Too bad it doesn't come with a code for a free/early demo download on PSN (or XB) even if they dont plan to do it now.
acefondu @ May 29th 2009 11:41AM
I still think this is a very pleasing movie. It sets out and accomplishes what it intended to do which was allow Cloud to finally forgive himself for Aries's death, and he does. It was a great capstone since even in the final shots of Cloud in the game we could still see that he had unfinished feelings about Aries, and Advent Children cleared it up. Albeit with an unessential subplot, but it was still entertaining.
Stalin @ May 29th 2009 12:33PM
Cloud was never even remotely "emo" in the original game.
Rhamsey @ May 29th 2009 12:38PM
im so tired of ff:vii, sure it was a good game, but not as good as its made out to be, ive had more fun most other ff games than vii.
Zerokku @ May 29th 2009 1:26PM
I agree. I had first played it 6 or so years ago and at the time was all OMGOMGFINALFANTASY7ISTHEBESTEST!!! But playing it again recently, It's actually rather average.
K1LLSWITCH @ May 29th 2009 12:55PM
I agree FFVII wasn't that great of a game, in my opinion. I think the reason why FFVII received so much attention and praise is because it was the first Final Fantasy title to be in 3D environments. And it blew everyone's minds. Unfortunately, 12 years later, the effects haven't worn off yet.
Also Advent Children wasn't a bad movie. What needed to be improved, which was addressed in this article, is the pacing of the story. The story itself made sense, for the most part, with the exception of the Geostigma. That wasn't really clear to me either. Kadaj and his brothers trying to resurrect Sephoroth to destroy the world? I got that. Geostigma mysteriously infecting all the children within Midgar? Not so much. Besides what was the effects of the infection anyway?
Alzheimers @ May 29th 2009 1:11PM
Am I the only person in the world who wished VII ended when they left the city? I mean seriously ... badass with a big sword rides off into the sunset on a stolen motorcycle after being blamed for the collapse of half the neighboorhood.
And...CUT!
Dave @ May 29th 2009 1:23PM
Finally an honest review of the movie. I watched the first version in Japanese, and I have to say I vomit in my mouth a little bit every time one of these fanboys tries to tell me it was the best movie ever made just because it (loosely) had to do with FF7. Probably the same deluded saps that try to tell me the ending of Evangelion made sense. :/ I played the game too and even still, there were so many things that just didn't make sense in the movie. Example: the whole thing about the children. There was absolutely no good explanation as to why the bad guys would even care about brainwashing a bunch of kids, they just did it. Instead of calling the movie FF7:Advent Children, they should have called it "Final Fantasy 7: Let's Find Jenova's Head!" That would have been a much more fitting title. Yet another fine example of why special effects and awesome action scenes alone don't make a good movie.
Kabapu @ May 31st 2009 12:18AM
... but ... but the ending to Evangelion *did* make sense ... and I mean the TV ending ... much better than the movie ending.
Gaymer @ May 29th 2009 1:36PM
This will be the 4th time i buy it.
1) Import DVD
2) UMD
3) U.S. DVD
and now on Blu-Ray..... sigh*
But I'll get to see hot men in tight leather jeans in all it's HD holiness.
Elmoogle @ May 29th 2009 1:59PM
No demo was a disappointing move, but an expected one. Taking the time to add subtitles and translate a few menus would have probably tripled the sales of this release. Ah well, live and (never ever ever) learn, eh Squeidonix?
Reuben @ May 29th 2009 2:40PM
I plan on purchasing this, however, I would under no circumstances recommend it to someone who has never played the game. It does not tailor to their needs, which frankly, I feel a film adaptation of a video game should not do. Movies such as "Max Payne" and "Doom" fail when they try to cater to everyone instead of the core audience. Well, that and the horrible acting/script.
I saw the "Silent Hill" film in theaters, and though it was not perfect, I loved it. It catered to me as a gamer, was faithful to the source material (mostly) and the director has gone on record saying that he is a big fan of the games, which goes a long way.
I went off on a little bit of a tangent there.
sumtone @ May 29th 2009 2:43PM
if they cant include FFXIII demo than mine as well include Spirit Within Bluray remake also... as a bonus i wouldnt mind havin 2 movie in 1 bluray even though im not goin to watch it a 2nd time for Spirits Within....
