That had to be the most offensive and downright ignorant article ever posted.

Cloud isn't ''emo'' and the film ISNT unenjoyable and hard to understand. I suggest you use your brain for once and figure out what's going on rather than have it handed to you on a plate like 90% of films out there currently do.

It's clear that the writer isn't as fond of FFVII as some of us, but i found some of the statements pathetic, especially for a ''review''.

Sorry, but I had trouble following what the hell what going on in the movie, and that was after reading up on plot synopsis for FF7 to remind me what had happened just before I watched the movie.

The plot jumps all over the place, things happen for seemingly no reason, and the action scenes are editted so fast that you can barely follow what's going on.

Hey Jonman,

it's cool. I am a bit of an FFVII fanboy, i admit, so whilst i admit the story wasn't the best regarding the whole geostigma thing, the movie (at least for me) was enjoyable.

Apologies if i came across in a bad way

Anyway, take care

Minor quibble: It isn't compression issues, but upscaling instead of re-rendering.

FFVII has the same pull for me as something like Harry Potter - the characters are nothing new, the story is solid, but mostly I just like the world and the atmosphere. The primary characters aren't necessarily deep, but the large cast of supporting characters is varied, interesting, and often amusing (the same can be said for each of the primary locales in the world).

And as far as main characters go, I would rather have a quiet, brooding guy with strange hair and an existential crisis than most of the other character archetypes. Video game protagonists that I like have the wonderful quality of just not saying much (Cloud, Squall...Alucard). I consider that 1. Not to be necessarily "emo" and 2. To be better than gun-toting linebackers with an IQ of 12. Or Tidus. God I hate Tidus.

(Note: Barret doesn't count as one of the aforementioned gun-toting linebackers because he is clearly smarter than that, his gun is technically part of his arm - he can't help it, and he is likely a caricature of that archetype anyways.)

The movie may not be for fans but if you couldn't follow the story you might want pay a little more attention. I'm going to pick it up and yes I'm a fan boy. I really did enjoy FF7 that much more for all the things you could do in the game as well as the story itself. Most of the other games were really drawn out with no real substance to game play. Now as for the movie it was nice to come up with a new story to go one as well bring back the big S. Yes everything was over the top and it was just plain fun. So anything added is just cake to me.

A fan boy. lol

I'm definitely not a big FF fan but while I didn't particularly like the gameplay of VII I loved the story. After a brief refresher on VII before watching AC I had no trouble following the story and picked up on some of the more subtle nuances in subsequent viewings. Not perfect but very enjoyable (Complete is much better - why are filmakers so afraid to let the movie and characters breathe? I'm looking at you Marvel).

Really like the resolution of Cloud's storyline (just because a character is tortured doesn't make him 'emo' - I think that's a stupid colloquialism), and love when Sephiroth shows up ("Good to see you.....Cloud") and Sephiroth's final line in the film is awesome.

I get that it's not for everyone but it wasn't made for everyone and I have no problem with that.

I watched the Japanese disc, and I agree 100% with the review. I think the new version is a vast improvement on the story. After watching the Complete version, I don't think I could stand rewatching the original.

It's not so much that the story as originally laid out was hard to understand, but it was short on explanations sometimes and left you with questions or unsure about characters' motivations. The new scenes/dialog go a long way to fix that. Like, I had convinced myslef the original made sense, but after watching the new version I realised that it sucked at explaining anything. I really think the Complete edition is the movie the original should have been.
