The Matrix Online pulls a Cypher, pulls the plug
All of you would-be Neos out there, know that you have limited time to tackle the remaining Agents of The Matrix Online. The game will be shutting down come July 31, 2009, says online community lead Daniel "Walrus" Myers. As sad as it is for the game to die a very silent, quick death, there's actually a lot to celebrate here. The game released way back in 2005, and has undoubtedly been a large part of peoples' lives since then. Over the span of four years, countless Agents have fallen and the human resistance steadily grew. And as a thank you for all of the support, SOE will be coordinating an end-of-world event, though the details of what it will entail were not presented by Myers.

I so wanted to love this game, but I just couldn't. Still sad to see it go, and the meh-tastic WoW keeps rolling.
Sad day for normal people everywhere.

I remember being really excited for it, then news came that SOE took over the project (at which point I promptly forgot The Matrix Online ever existed).
Doombot (zuburi) @ May 29th 2009 11:41PM
The single-target combat was really, really good, and I also liked how you could go into any room in any building.
Other than that...
DigitalTwisted @ May 30th 2009 12:04AM
Yeah the ideas were sound the implementation wasn't. In fairness to SOE they kept up the in-game events for a while which is what the main draw was.
But again the implementation let it down because if you went on holiday and missed 2 weeks you came back and where nowhere.

Sounds just like SWG. The first MMO to break my heart (followed by many more).

"and I also liked how you could go into any room in any building."
Wow, really? That's a lot of rooms, looking at the screenshots. I've always wanted to see a game like that, with buildings that aren't just background props like in most games. Hmm... think they'll still give out free trials?
The Baron @ May 29th 2009 11:05PM
When one good MMO goes bankrupt, ten generic ones step up to replace it.
RiccochetJ @ May 29th 2009 11:08PM
From the sounds of it, this game is going to go out with a bang. Regardless if the humans or the machines win, the plug is going to get pulled. Should be epic for those of you that had a great time within the Matrix.
ZenGaijin @ May 29th 2009 11:11PM
"How can he be "The One" Trinity if he's DEAD!?!"
CH3BURASHKA @ May 29th 2009 11:27PM
"Believe it or not, you piece of shit, you're still gonna burn" *bzzzz*
Snake Robot Podium @ May 30th 2009 10:53AM
No, I don't believe it...
Evan @ May 29th 2009 11:17PM
When an MMO shuts down, all the in-game time and accomplishments of it's players vanish with it.
MystileArmor @ May 29th 2009 11:19PM
Some people play for the interaction between others, not just for the accomplishments.
relaxeder @ May 29th 2009 11:20PM
The more you know...
Reader @ May 30th 2009 1:21AM
That's only inevitable... To add, it's not like it's any different in real life (unless you do something especially spectacular).
BJBlazkowicz @ May 29th 2009 11:18PM
Better be worth it.
NukeAssault @ May 29th 2009 11:22PM
I rememeber my friends wanting to get this. About 3 weeks later they all gave up on it and then went back to Jedi Academy. =P
DVersion @ May 29th 2009 11:23PM
Not Like This....
DP @ May 30th 2009 3:02AM
...not like this. *drop* (and tell me that chick didn't look like Keanu.)
CH3BURASHKA @ May 29th 2009 11:26PM
Too soon, David Hinkle, too soon...
Crazylink @ May 29th 2009 11:39PM
Didn't they kill off Morpheus in the game?
DigitalTwisted @ May 30th 2009 12:06AM
Yes they did. Gheyest move ever. It was like a month after the game launched and bang Morpheus is dead, millions of potential stories lost.
.....and the damn assassin turned out to be nothing more than a mass swarm of FLIES that we had to literally kill with bug spray!!
Scott Reeser @ May 29th 2009 11:59PM
It's crazy when the biggest waves these MMOs make is when they're getting shut down.
bearfoot.fb @ May 30th 2009 12:20AM
You wouldn't have said that if you actually played the game Scott.
It was bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad.
what's suprising to me is that it lasted this long frankly.
Dark Lurker @ May 30th 2009 12:39AM
I remember that as well, NukeAssault :P
Kino @ May 30th 2009 8:27PM
WTF, people were still actually playing this?
Markusdragon @ May 30th 2009 12:52AM
Not like this, not like this...
Markusdragon @ May 30th 2009 12:53AM
Damn, beaten to it by miles.
pliny5678 @ May 30th 2009 12:58AM
"Not like this." You forgot "*THUD.*"
fischju @ May 30th 2009 1:30AM
The story line is considered canon in the Matrix universe, it will be interesting to see how they end it.
Snake Robot Podium @ May 30th 2009 10:55AM
That was the only reason I was interested in it, having never been an MMO guy. My pathetic PC cpuldn't run it at the time anyway.
Does anyone know where there's a rundown of what happened in the story?
j.howlett @ May 30th 2009 1:41AM
whoa, deja vu
tkAshur @ May 30th 2009 3:34AM
Wow...I thought this game was dead...huh. So, does anyone else think that other than the online game that this series is dead anyways?
smcn @ May 30th 2009 9:21PM
I like to pretend anything Matrix-related after the first movie just doesn't exist.
bamb0o-stick @ May 30th 2009 6:45AM
"SOE will be coordinating an end-of-world event"
I'm already picturing a huge tribal cave party and someone screaming "This is Zion!!! And we are not afraid!!!"
Obi-Habby @ May 30th 2009 7:08PM
Random orgy scene for the win. We have a battle that will decide the fate of the rest of our lives tomorrow, but first we DANCE!
Gibbeynater @ May 30th 2009 7:18AM
Maybe everyone gets a trenchcoat, or everyone gets to be the One.
