A job listing found on both Gamasutra and Microsoft's careers website is seeking out an engineer to work on a "game" that will support up to "300,000 players in real-time." The job ad states that Microsoft is working on "building an extremely high performance system to extend console games to the server in new ways" and that it's "creating a completely new set of web services" for Xbox Live and Xbox.com integration.
It sounds to us like Microsoft is planning to overhaul the Dashboard and Xbox Live service and combine it with an MMO-like system (given the 300K-player support). Or, it could be building a separate virtual world interface like Sony's PlayStation Home. What do you think Microsoft could be working on?

Speaking of such things what the hell is the point with the Mii channel?
You'd have thought by now you could download a basketball court or something for them, i don't know, maybe a heater so they stop catching colds?
Just saying.

It's a place where you can create and receive avatars. Don't be so dense.

it was simply meant for use to personalise your Wii to fit you and your personality, it wasn't meant to be a game, why download a basketball court or anything when you could just play a basketball game and have the feature in it?

Really? Of course not in a single match, but there have been well over 300k online on those games plenty of times.

I want to see NTN (national trivia network) on live. If they could make that work I'd be all over it. I think it would open the 360 to a new crowd (ie bar flys).

I was just thinking something. If it takes a while to find 8 people to play a game of Halo/Gears/COD/Whatever, how long will it take to find 256 people to play MAG?

256 players is just the maximum amount of players possible. It should still be fun with 147 players, no? ;)

They would still have to overhaul the system first, as it stands, it can't handle that amount of players, but with an overhaul and more & powerful servers that will be a thing of the past. It will take a while though, so don't get all excited yet, and don't think Sony isn't working at the same thing as well as Nintendo. Obviously they all want to have thousands upon thousands of gamers in the same place at the same time.

What kind of evil megalomaniac would commission such a thing? Oh wait, it's Microsoft.

God i hope its not like HOME, everytime i log onto it i find myself asking....why did sony waste so much time on this pointless thing when they could of been using that money to make games or make some games exclusives (although i hate the idea of exclusives). I just hope its not an MMORPG, a 300k shooter would be nice but i dont see any server being able to handle that.

Well if you ask sony why did they bother, it's because they're making ridiculous amounts of money from people buying (currently) useless shit in Home. And Sony needs money.

So what do you call all of the AAA FIRST party exclusives that Sony has been pumping out and will continue to do so for the rest of 2009 and beyond. Please don't make me post a list for you.
Does your temperal footprint belong in 2007? Are you finding yourself popping in and out of existence in this time? Just to clear things up it is 2009 and Sony has by FAR the upper hand on upcoming exclusives, I would even say in my opinion Sony has already surpassed MS is exclusives both on the Downloadable games and disc based games.
Like it or not Home is getting better every week and in 1 or 2 years time the other two companies will be forced to follow suit by some kind of Home clone. Online interactive worlds will be very appealing to game companies and eventually other companies. Why waste money on brick and mortar when you can do it virtually?
Who knows what the future will bring but one thing is for certain, Home is here to stay and it will be impemented in an ever evolving form on every single future Sony home entertainment system.
Ms knows this and I would bet that this job posting is for a Home clone of some sort. The Miitoos are just the beginning....book it, lead pipe lock it...cue up the fat lady.

This could be the worlds largest version of hide and seek.
Or, better yet, this could be the beginning of The World.

Please don't get started with this "stealing" bit. Everyone "steals" from everyone.
We see something we like and put it in the next version of whatever we make. Some call it stealing, I say imitation is the highest form of flattery, especially with gaming.

good artists borrow, great artists steal.
The best technology is rarely a completely new idea theyre just a mash-up of old technology with a new improvement. Mobile phones are a great example with how they rarely get new features. 3g is the newest that comes to mind but then companies just release them with finer tuning or new styles.
An avatar home would be a nice Idea but only if they give it purpose other than chatroom. We chat in games okay, we dont need a big one to talk as we sit about.
maybe tennis or 5 a-side avatar football. could you imagine an avatar paintball game?

Steal? If it was stolen, don't you think Microsoft would be able to sue them for it? Besides, this is Microsoft you are talking about here, the same company competing with everyone and using other ideas created by others to push itself up, including the idea of a games console ¬_¬ The idea of an MP3 player, the idea of.....you get the drift. Its business and as long as its not copyrighted, its not stealing

No Apple code was ever stolen, so get your facts straight about that. Microsoft based Windows off of a WIP idea they had Xerox present them, after realising they needed to keep one step ahead of Apple.

I've never been a fan of massive multiplayer games. You either have too many people, or not enough people to fill the space. I know that Killzone 2 can support 128 players online, and yeah, it's impressive, but I still prefer smaller maps. Far Cry 2, on the other hand, doesn't have enough players to fill some maps. Especially Sand Blasted. I think that Gears 2 has the best size teams and size of maps. I don't want to be searching for an hour until somebody reaches 50 kills.
