Last.fm service coming to Xbox Live
The internet-based "social music community," Last.fm, is coming to Xbox Live later this year. Microsoft has announced that Last.fm functionality -- which (among other features) recommends bands and songs to users based on the music they misten to -- will be integrated into the Xbox 360 dashboard, and that it will carry no additional charge for Live users. (It's not clear yet if this will be a Gold Member-only feature.)

This is a lot more exciting than that Facebook/Twitter silliness. I will actually use this service all the time. Very nice!
Tegolin @ Jun 1st 2009 2:56PM
Cool! For real.
Jeff Smith @ Jun 1st 2009 2:57PM
I love to "misten" to music ! :p
PedoJokerBear (aka Deeznuts) @ Jun 1st 2009 2:58PM
mistening to music is cool
evilspoons @ Jun 1st 2009 2:58PM
My gigantic number of songs played on Last.fm make me very happy about this announcement.
When they say it's free for Gold Live users, does this mean I can access the now-not-free radio service from their web page or is it only free on the Xbox?
MosquitoControl @ Jun 1st 2009 3:00PM
Bad timing, considering Last.fm recently admitted to giving up all the client information.
Studley @ Jun 1st 2009 3:22PM
Congratulations on stating the opposite to what actually happened.

MosquitoControl, do you have a source to back this up? Last I heard, CBS, the RIAA, and last.fm all denied the claims Michael Arrington made on TechCrunch about user data being handed over. And considering almost all dissenting comments about it have been deleted on TC, I have a tough time believing his accusation, which he says comes from an inside source but offers no proof beyond that. If it's true, I'd love to know.. where did you see last.fm admitting to giving up all the client information?
MosquitoControl @ Jun 1st 2009 4:27PM
Whether they're denying it or not it's still bad publicity and therefore bad timing.
The story as a whole is a non-story, as even if the RIAA did have that info they can't do anything with it as they've no way to tell how the music got where.

@sammy
I have come to the conclusion that Michael Arlington is full of crap most of the time anyways. That is why I gave up Techcrunch, he is definitely full of crap.
TruthBringer @ Jun 2nd 2009 9:40AM
Sorry, correction, Michael Arrington
Okänd @ Jun 1st 2009 3:12PM
Does this mean they're going to kill off the Zune Social maybe then?
slainbaby @ Jun 1st 2009 6:06PM
Microsoft would not give up their own service for a third party to take it over.
Twisted Name @ Jun 1st 2009 3:41PM
yey for last fm. im listening right now.
boo to the facebook twitter thing though, twitter was bad enough when getting updates sent to my phone. i dont want them during a game, and facebook just plain and simply blows.
Demaar @ Jun 1st 2009 3:51PM
Yeah but you don't NEED to have the updates sent to you. You can like... not use it. I think it's rad. I mean, I probably won't use the twitter stuff, but the option is nice.
Twisted Name @ Jun 1st 2009 4:47PM
i know, but not having the updates on kinda defys the point. i just ended up deleting my twitter account. figured i didnt need to know what pointless tasks friends were doing all day everyday. Plus face to face is more fun,
damn kids with your texting. heh
Ghen @ Jun 1st 2009 3:48PM
Pandora is scientifically better than Last.fm , but I guess its better than nothing. Meh.
Demaar @ Jun 1st 2009 3:53PM
Difference is that, last time I used it (which was before the blocked it to international usage), Pandora was like a real radio station, where you don't know what's coming up next. Last.fm and its premium service (Which I hope is really what they meant is free for gold users) allows you to play songs on demand.
I must admit that Pandora was fantastic for helping me find new bands/artists back when I used it, but for listening to stuff I already know and love last.fm is superior. If it weren't for Natal, this would be the most important announcement from the keynote for me.
V-Mode @ Jun 1st 2009 3:52PM
Is it going to require that you sign up and create an account like on with the Internet version?
Demaar @ Jun 1st 2009 3:55PM
They didn't specify. Ideally I don't think it should, but it probably will.
Tep @ Jun 1st 2009 4:02PM
If only they didn't sell out users to the RIAA including IP address I'd be happy about this announcement.
finnith @ Jun 1st 2009 4:03PM
Just another service that us Canadians will lack.
Arkitekt @ Jun 1st 2009 4:07PM
last.fm is available to canadians so why would the service on Live not be? Sounds more like they are intregating last.fm into the consoles to run off of existing internet, you will most likely have to have a last.fm account to use the service. I expect it to run much like the Skype service on the PSP's.
finnith @ Jun 1st 2009 8:34PM
http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/03/24/last-fm-to-charge-international-users-a-subscription-fee/
Hmm? How will that work?
JonathanCGS @ Jun 6th 2009 4:07AM
I am also canadian and I hope we get this service. During E3 he said "around the world" I'm hoping canada gets it free of charge. We deserve it for the Xbox Live Gold Membership.
Cash @ Jun 1st 2009 4:24PM
I guess Pandora must be an Apple exclusive or something.
victor @ Jun 1st 2009 5:35PM
now if they could only get the Zune to scrobble...
Tez @ Jun 1st 2009 5:56PM
The integration itself is really cool, but I wish it was Pandora instead.
Ves @ Jun 1st 2009 6:00PM
Nice addition, but I hardly listen to music on my 360 and I haven't used Last.fm since the payment announcement for the streaming radio.
Boff @ Jun 2nd 2009 7:46AM
Ha ha! For a minute then I thought you said that it will carry no additional charge for Live users!!
Max Limitz @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:48PM
You still have to pay for Last.FM before you can actually enjoy it, so not for everyone. I would like to see _free_ iTunes and WinAmp netradios on Xbox 360.
