Hands-on with Halo 3: ODST's new Firefight mode
Don't call it Horde mode. Well, actually, yeah, go ahead and call it Horde mode. Just know that there are some significant differences between Halo 3: ODST's Firefight mode and the Gears of War 2 sensation. Still, if you enjoy the thrill of a lone group of human partners staving off dozens of bloodthirsty enemies, Firefight should be right up your alley.
Firefight mode is played in sets. Each set is divided into three rounds, while each round is divided into five waves of enemies. As you might expect, each wave of enemies becomes progressively more difficult, beginning at first with a handful of Grunts and Jackals and escalating all the way of Brute Chieftains. Note the plural there. If you thought dealing with one Chieftain was a pain, try dealing with a whole pack. In between waves of enemies, players will be resupplied with fresh health packs, allowing them to hopefully finish the fight.
Firefight mode does more than simply pile on the enemies though, it also escalates the difficulty in more creative ways using the same skulls found in the Halo 3 campaign. As such, you might find the first round of play to be a breeze only to find that the next round of foes have more health or become more adept at dodging your grenades.
Bungie's Brian Jarrard informed us that something special happens whenever a group of players successfully completes a set, though he wouldn't elaborate on what it was. We don't know how many maps Firefight mode will have, though Jarrard told us that they are all pulled from sections of the main campaign. Once players complete a specific campaign section, it's unlocked for play in Firefight.
We got to try out two of the game's new weapons -- if there are more, Bungie's not saying -- including the new pistol and a silenced SMG. The silenced SMG performs exactly as you would expect it to, spraying enemies with lots of relatively ineffective bullets, though it does include a scope this time around. The pistol is a lot of fun -- Bungie's Joseph Staten called it "a beast" -- and features a nice scope and very fast semi-automatic fire. Oh, and it headshots grunts real nice.
The ODSTs themselves have some tricks of their own, most notably a special visor mode to highlight enemies and make them easier to pick off. This is especially useful for invisible enemies that show up in later waves. While ODSTs might have this slight advantage over Master Chief, it's important to remember that they have additional human frailties. That means they don't have regenerating shields (hence the health packs) and, yes, they take damage when falling long distances. We also noticed the significant difference in scale. Jackals, which look pretty small from the seven-foot-tall vantage of Master Chief, look much more intimidating through the eyes of a normal human ODST.
So, yeah, Firefight mode is Horde mode with a Halo twist. There are lots of bells and whistles that make it a different experience, but the core gameplay concept translates just fine in the Halo universe, and that's really all that matters.

Their podcast (posted today!) talks a bunch about their inspirations, how they came about thinking of Firefight Mode, and they don't mention Gears at all.
NukeAssault @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:59PM
Yeah, i just got finished listening to that earlier. They say someone started trying to make such a mode some time after they finished Halo 3.
jarhead906 @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:23PM
Realistically, the ODST's would die with only one plasma shot. They don't exactly have a MJOLNIR suit like the Spartans. Then again this is a game.
Here's hoping that the future Halo titles pay more attention to the established Halo Universe unlike the second and third iterations.
Aurailious @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:07PM
"Here's hoping that the future Halo titles pay more attention to the established Halo Universe unlike the second and third iterations".
Please inform me where they went wrong? I have all six books and have read a lot into Halo lore and I found 2 and 3 fell perfectly in line.
Sam406 @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:39PM
As far as canon goes, what the game says overwrites anything the books say, same as with Star Wars: A bunch of books were turned into non-canon when Force Unleashed dropped.
Aurailious @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:18PM
But the cannon wasn't written over. In fact several times I have noticed where the books have taken supremacy over the games when it comes to cannon.
Bungie has routinely stayed strict to cannon. In fact, I would wager a lot that even before ODST was envisioned that the story for it was already created.
aristokrat @ Jun 3rd 2009 12:05AM
This is a cannon: http://z.about.com/d/goeasteurope/1/0/N/1/-/-/TsarCannon.jpg
Unless you are maybe thinking of the "Yes we cannon": http://files5.bungie.org/yes_we_cannon.wmv
Velsar @ Jun 3rd 2009 1:29AM
The downvoting of people who are correct needs to seriously be stopped, in the books the concept of survival for Spartans was NOT GETTING HIT, but in the games its NOT DYING FROM TOO MANY HITS, RECHARGE THAT SHIELD MASTER CHIEF!, which is not in any manner what the books imply.
You see a plasma pistol can burn apart the armor of a mjolnir at close range and thus the same at long range (plasma doesn't deteriorate over distance within the magnetic bottle) while in the game it does little damage to shields and VERY LITTLE to armor... now imagine the plasma rifle... that thing was deadly in the books, so it makes sense what the people above are stating.
GREAT REFERENCE with the CANNON...
Canon is story... just so you know.
Shadsy @ Jun 3rd 2009 3:39AM
Jesus christ it's a GAME. I love the Halo canon too, but surely they can play with it a little to make the game more fun? "Halo: One-Shot Disposable Grunt" doesn't sound that appealing.
If anything, Legendary difficulty will probably be closer to what you're looking for.
SuiXide @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:52AM
@ Velsar:
One word: Legendary.
A few more words: Or Mythic. Take your pick. Obviously the demo was played with God mode (of some sort, maybe like Half-Life 2 where you keep at least 1 heath) so that Joe didn't die when giving a press conference demo. That'd be pretty embarrassing, I'd think.
scleond @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:00AM
That's not a cannon. . . .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkiDaSLKib0
THAT'S a cannon
aristokrat @ Jun 3rd 2009 12:02PM
In the books, I think that the Covenant's shields were capable of stopping plasma fire. I also believe that stolen Covenant technology was implemented in the latest Mjolnir armor, specifically newer shield technology. Master Chief received armor upgrades at various points (we are at Mark VII), so it's not unbelievable that the later Halo's had more resilient anti-plasma capabilities. Also, in the books, the pre-Halo Spartans on Reach survived a ludicrously long fall when they're transport failed, so I think they're more than just about not getting hit.
And since we haven't actually played ODST, we can't be calling it out on anything.
Maxx the Slash @ Jun 11th 2009 8:52PM
Right, because the fact completely unarmored, fatigue-wearing marines in Halo 1 could withstand a couple plasma blasts is TOTALLY realistic...
andyface @ Jun 13th 2009 8:17PM
I think that the problem with trying to juxtapose games with books is that they aren't quite the same thing.
In books you have to make things more interesting by giving pace and not having drawn out battles where a spartan gets shot 4 times in the face, hears a helpful beeping noise, so hides behind a box for a bit so that his health regenerates, so that he can pop out again to fire off some more badly aimed shots in the hope that he kills the thing he's aiming at before it kills him, hide behind another box, then pop out again wildly throwing grenades whilst fumbling around throwing equipment instead of reloading and sticking plasma grenades to the ceiling instead of lobbing a frag grenade round a corner. That's how it'd go if you wrote it like I play it.
Whereas in games (well FPSs anyway) if you had to dodge bullets (which would have to be moving extra slow so you could react to them) and died every time you got shot by the most peony of all peons with the most piddly of guns (which is kinda true on legendary) you'd hate the game and never play it because it'd just be too hard. Thus the varying difficulty levels so you can work your way up to dying ever few seconds. Which is how it goes when I play it. Halo Wars potentially sees a more realistic view of things over the FPS Halos but that's also a different medium in a sense, due to it's ability to have more expendable troops.
Essentially these are two different mediums of entertainment and both have to convey a story (or cannon supposedly, never head that phrase before) in a way that is appropriate to their format. Both are valid and both have to bend the others rules (or potentially a more true set of rules for the universe which exists in a plane which sole purpose is for ultimate knowledge and nothing else) in order to be entertaining, otherwise they wouldn't sell and wouldn't be very popular and we'd not have something to discuss in a joystiq comment section, and then what would we do?
Caleb Frost @ Jun 22nd 2009 4:23PM
realistically??? did you forget you were replying to a video game based off of a future war with aliens?
jacko_goes_wacko @ Jun 25th 2009 6:07AM
but then again this games recovery system which is identical to the call of duty series system would vary same way
for example like you saying that one plasma shot cud kill an odst is the same thing as 5 bullets in the stomach to a russian in call of duty
Donny J. @ Jun 27th 2009 10:38PM
joystiq if I drive out to la will you sneak me in? I must play this game
SPARTAN 294 @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:24PM
I'm really looking forward to this. Bungie never disappoints. I'm just waiting on some more info on Halo:Reach. The fall of reach was by far one of my favorite books of all time. PLEASE GET THEM DRUNK FOR INFO !!!!! :P
sinyakuza @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:26PM
I was told if you buy this halo youll have access to the halo: reach beta. Also they said ODST will come out in September.
sinyakuza @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:24PM
I played it at e3 today and man it was really fun can't wait!!!!
Idk if this is new or not but they told me anyone who buys halo: ODST will have access to the halo: reach beta of whatever it called
james @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:38PM
its not new but the effort is appreciated
Mouthsmasher @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:40PM
That is correct, that Halo 3: ODST owners will have access to the Halo: Reach Xbox Live multiplayer beta. Bungie made mention of it on their own website at the bottom of the following article:
http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&link=Halo3ODSTE3
Velsar @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:27PM
Actually Bungie has disappointed before, but we won't dwell on this, that first image is EPIC... Hunter in the background needs to be more prominent and more menacing but SERIOUSLY EPIC...
Here's hoping the Campaign that I buy this game for, lasts more than a measly 6 hours.
Velsar @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:34PM
In truth, without squad combat the ODST's wouldn't stand a chance against the Elites, but against Brutes... MAYBE... but still unlikely.
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:29PM
health packs? Does that mean they go back to Halo 1 health in ODST?
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:37PM
i mean i know they said health packs in the article, but didnt Joe say something about regenerating health? And wasnt that visible in the demo?
ryan @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:39PM
I'd imagine so, I don't think they have recharge armor. They should give you limited health packs to carry so you don't have to go searching for them scattered around.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 3rd 2009 12:29AM
Well makes sense although they should include the armor bar as well.Remember that bulletproof vest isn't a plasma proof vest.
Erik @ Jun 14th 2009 7:23PM
I like the loss of shields and the return of health bar in Halo. But I worry the game will feel like Call of Duty one did. Running around looking for health packs etc. It takes away from the fast paced game play. I felt the slow recharging shields of Halo 1 made you less invincible and more fair in terms of game play. I don't want to be unkillable, but I don't want to spend the game just worrying about my health bar. (I'm sure Bungie will do it right though).
Jeffrey Haywood @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:33PM
OMG! i was saying how they should put a mode like this in halo a while ago this made my day
waynski1457 @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:36PM
New health system sounds interesting. I am wishing that some of these changes would extend to the competitive MP, but I still love that the way it is. And Horde mode was my favorite part of Gears2, so this should be sweeter than candy.
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:38PM
I sent in a tip so hopefully they'll post it but if they dont; bungie.net has a page up detailing everything about the squad, from blood type, name, birthplace, legal citizen ship, occupation and ladies man personality. http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&link=Halo3ODSTsquad
finnith @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:55PM
I really like their custom armour, I always felt that the ODST helmet looked just a BIT too small for Spartans in Multiplayer H3.
Premature ejaculation man @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:01PM
Where as the girls recon helmet looks over sized don't you think?
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:33PM
im confused about Mickey, he seems as much the heavy weapons guy as Dutch, although maybe he's more specifically demolitions.
james @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:39PM
I wish they made the humans more vulnerable. like you REAlly needed to stay out of the line of fire. maybe putting a 3rd person cover system would have been neat.
At least you now have health and are 3 feet smaller.
bak @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:55PM
I was thinking the same thing. I was hoping for a Ghost Recon feel. Will still get it because I love Halo but am just getting more and more interested in the more realistic games these days...
Premature ejaculation man @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:00PM
3 feet? I didn't know ODST's were 4 foot tall midgets ;p
james @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:06PM
aren't spartans like 9 feet? sorry my memory from the books is kinda hazy.
james @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:06PM
SHIT my bad i meant to reply to premature ejaculation mans post
finnith @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:17PM
http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Master_chief
7.2 ft with MJOLNIR, less without it.
West @ Jun 3rd 2009 3:53AM
That was just the Master Chief, if I remember from the books some where taller and some were a bit shorter. Supposedly the MC was somewhere in the middle.
Slaker117 @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:16PM
Sweet. I was just listening to the Bungie guys talk about this in their podcast. Can't wait. I've loved the survival modes games have been putting in recently and am glad its finally coming to Halo. Its interesting that with all the complex evolutions games have made, straight fighting is still the most fun.
james @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:30PM
shows what i know. says it right in the article too.
james @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:32PM
please downvote me to teach me a lesson. i need to learn how to reply correctly.
won't happen again folks.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jun 3rd 2009 12:35AM
Not sure if want.
The inclusion of a deeper story, more believable characters and the horde mode makes it hard to ignore but I'm not a halo fan (Even when I have played every single Halo game and read the reference material,no one will ever say I did not try to get into the game).
My only complain is that while in the new screenshots is obvious they improved the Halo engine they didn't improve it that much and is a spin off but one heck of a spin off none the less. Also is just me or the athmosphere feels a bit inspired on Call of duty 4.
benjaminzigo @ Aug 8th 2009 11:42AM
can you play firefight local if you dont have xbox live
ExMcCloud @ Jun 3rd 2009 1:12AM
