Nintendo reveals new Super Mario Bros. for Wii

The multiplayer will have an emphasis on co-operative play, all while maintaining that classic Super Mario look and feel. Thus, you'll find warp pipes, hidden areas, and plenty of coins to collect. It's not all old hat, however, as the NIntendo presentation showed off a new Propeller suit, where Mario and company had a propeller attached to their heads. While playing (you hold the Wiimote sideways), players can jerk the Wiimote up to cause their in-game player to fly into the air.
Nintendo says the game will be available during the holidays this year, and will be on the show floor all this week. You can bet we'll be stomping Goombas as soon as we can, and will be sure to get you our impressions as soon as possible.

Pumapayam @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:28PM
REALLY, with Seth and Amy.
PedoJokerBear (aka Deeznuts) @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:20PM
cool i guess....
charlie b. @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:31PM
it doesn't look terrible, but it doesn't look worth $50, either. also... am i the only one who thinks that "New Super Mario Bros." is a terrible title? what are they gonna call the Mario games next generation? "Newer Super Mario Bros.?"
phobic99 @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:21PM
Maybe I'm jaded but I really wasn't impressed by this game at all. Definitely gonna have to see more but I really felt like "meh".
Ostentaneous @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:21PM
Really? This is the new mario? Really?
*sigh*
Pumapayam @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:30PM
Well, it is on the Wii, what can you expect with 2 Gamecubes and some duct tape?
Arrowned @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:40PM
Pumapayam: Oh I don't know, something like Super Mario Galaxy which was jaw-droppingly amazing?
BananaBoat @ Jun 2nd 2009 1:27PM
No, this isn't the only Mario. They announced Mario Galaxy 2.
I was underwhelmed by the demo, but I think a new 2D Mario could be excellent if the right studio were assigned to create it.
brentnahmias44 @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:22PM
Awful, a DS game for wii, and then wii fit + stuff that should have been there from the start and not a game anyways, then wii motion+ which is how silly waggle should have been from the start. Glad I sold my wii.
DarrenHollywood @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:22PM
What are you talking about? I'm a little surprised by a 2D Console Mario. I'm hyped up for it too. Hopefully it delivers something close to what Mario World and Super Mario 3 did. Years of replay value!
MarioSpitza @ Jun 2nd 2009 1:13PM
I agree.
A NSMB for the Wii was completely out of the left field for me. Of course, lately, I've been completely overwhelmed by anti-Nintendo negativity. At no point did I even realize that NSMB for the Wii was a possibility.
Perhaps that had helped, though, because the 'meh' games which had been announced (Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sport Resorts) didn't bother me while the other games while the nice games (Golden Sun, NSMB) seems extremely nice.
Robert @ Jun 2nd 2009 4:13PM
Personally I thought that New Super Mario Bros. for the DS was the best mario game since mario 3 - I can't wait for this, much more excited for this than Super Mario Galaxy 2. I've never been much for the 3D mario games.
Ordeith @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:23PM
Are they the Wiggles? :)
Pumapayam @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:23PM
hmmmm . . . a "4 player 2-D sidescroller". It smells LittleBigPlanet influence, Mario style for the Wii.
Add in custom level editor and the comparisons can continue.
brentnahmias44 @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:29PM
Don't forget 2d mario has good controls, Lbp controls like feces.
Cellien @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:30PM
Except the tightness of controls (since original Super Mario Bros.) will remain superior to LBP's floaty, inaccurate control.
Cellien @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:31PM
brent beat me to it. :)
Ashitaka @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:59PM
@ brentnahmias44, Cellien
It's called 'physics'.
Just view this as a downgraded version of LBP. What else would you expect, it's for the Wii.
Sly, King of the First Isle of inFamous [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 2nd 2009 1:10PM
LBP wasn't floaty at all. you could make incredibly precise jumps. i know 5 year olds that can do some of the hardest levels like the bunker all the way. those levels require really precise jumping. if you can't jump precisely, you might as well quit gaming.
acefondu @ Jun 2nd 2009 1:58PM
Platforming: Mario>>>>>LBP
TwEE @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:18PM
LBP is pretty floaty.. its not really as intense as mario but still great anyway.
Rob Bourne @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:24PM
So, er, if it's local multi and everyone's on one screen, what's going to happen when one person wants to go down a pipe etc?
Pumapayam @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:27PM
Well, the screen should zoom in and zoom out depending on the proximity of others, but if the warp is further off, I too can see this as a problem.
AirIntake @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:29PM
Probably the same thing that happened to Tails in Sonic 2 I suppose
ndt @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:59PM
The video showed such a scenario. The first player goes down the pipe, and the screen stops moving until the other players (or maybe *enough* of them) also go down the pipe.
Ryan Hamilton @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:25PM
Nintendo is so boring! They're basically talking about everything they talked about at last years E3, just extending on it. Please show more Fitness games! Oh please Nintendo! Joy! Show that plus add-on that Project Natal made obsolete yesterday.
Pumapayam @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:28PM
This is WAY better than Wii Music.
TwEE @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:45PM
"Show that plus add-on that Project Natal made obsolete yesterday".. You're a big fan of the eye toy 2 huh?
Hexen @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:49PM
Probably saving the best for last, Nintendo knows not to let it's fans down but I seriously whoa about much bragging they are doing in their conference.
Luke @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:28PM
Awesome news. I love the 2D resurgence in recent years, which is mostly on Wii. If a game is fun in 2D, then it's fun, bottom line. Mario is best in 2D, and this should be the most beautiful 2D Mario ever made. There are great reasons to be excited.
HalcyonGT @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:31PM
Maybe if I was 10yrs old this would be cool. C'mon Nintendo. I know you got more than this up your sleeve.
Jose @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:30PM
After Epic's announcement, I'm giddy too see all the 2D love. Anyway, what disheartens me is that Nintendo continues to promote the idea that the way my sister used to flail the controller in the original SMB is precisely the way in which you will control this propeller suit.
DaveMcRae the Haiku Artist @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:33PM
Who cares anymore?
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:34PM
This is pure shit in my opinion on Nintendo's part here is why
This is a New Super Mario Bros. from the DS ported to the Wii with 4 player Co-Op.
Don't get me wrong New Super Mario Bros. is an awesome game and I love the multiplayer feature on it with versus mode but porting it onto the Wii as something new just because it has 4 play Co-Op is complete rubbish.
Make a damn sequel of Super Mario 64
TwEE @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:43PM
"Make a damn sequel of Super Mario 64"
Whats sunshine and galaxy?
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:47PM
I meant a true sequel, while Super Mario Sunshine was fun and I never got into Super Mario Galaxy; Super Mario 64 was by far the best out of the 3 in my opinion.
baby sea tuna @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:59PM
No way, Galaxy kicks the holy hell outta those other two.
I do think it'll suck, though, if this is just a port of NSMB. Great game, sure, but I've already played through it twice.
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 2nd 2009 1:02PM
i take it back thank god for a new 3d mario!
TwEE @ Jun 2nd 2009 1:35PM
I've tried playiing Super Mario 64 recently and I cant.. 2D marios are the best anyway. The 3D ones are nice spinoffs.
Eccentric-Servbot @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:39PM
Oi.... big surprise... people already putting this game down despite only seeing a demo level!
I think that this game looks like solid Mario fun!
2D Mario has always been fun, and I can't see a Mario Galaxy level model jumping around on a classic 2D-style plane possibly not being fun!
TwEE @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:40PM
This is great!
MaRRODkez @ Jun 2nd 2009 1:05PM
Really? Aren't you a little disappointed they didn't actually put time in effort into a solid single player effort, rather than rehash what'd been done already on the DS? To me this just looks like it smacks of lack of effort.
TwEE @ Jun 2nd 2009 1:32PM
All I know is I bring my wii out drinking with me.. And the girls I know love 2D mario but not 3D mario.. Plus this is 4 players at once, which is going to be a blast to play with my drinking buddies.
I havent seen enough of it to know what is or isnt missing from it. Have you?
MaRRODkez @ Jun 2nd 2009 1:43PM
You are right on all accounts, and they did announce Galaxy 2 after all. Can't help that my initial impression was just 'meh, really?'
Good point, it might be remarkably fun which is all that matters to me anyway.
DonkeyKongHustlin @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:41PM
YEssss 2d mario finally
Danny @ Jun 3rd 2009 12:50AM
I belive for some reason they are calling it 4D.
Troy Powers (PSN: TroyPowers) @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:44PM
Is it possible to be under-whelmed, yet still think, "Gee, that looks like fun."
JizzyB @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:47PM
Don't get me wrong, this game looks interesting. But it really doesn't look all that different than the DS version. Why not put this on DS as well where the 4-player Co-op would work much better with 4 individual screens? I don't know if you guys heard this but they've sold over 100 million DS units and over 1 million DSi units! Way to go Nintendo!
madhat @ Jun 2nd 2009 12:49PM
Nintendo already did a modern 2D platformer on the Wii with Wario Land: Shake It! (great game, BTW). This is just more of the same, I guess?
