Wanna see Team Ninja's take on the Metroid franchise in action? Yeah, we thought that would get your attention. We've got the video we captured straight from the show floor, so now you can feel the mind-melting thrill that we got just a few minutes ago.
Sorry about the shaky-cam nonsense, as Nintendo hasn't started spreading the clip around yet. We'll update as soon as we can.
Every time I've said something exactly like that I've been hated on. I don't get it. It is the truth. This game looks awesome and I haven't bought any other game for a Wii in a while or even played it really.
I made a romantic explosion in my pants. It was that awesome. For the first time in a while, Nintendo has made me want to turn my Wii on again. But, 2010 can't come fast enough.
I thought that was Mother Brain.. she better have that sassy voice from the Captain N cartoon or I'm going to join Killjebus and Tmac and help bring down Nintendo one post at a time..
i agree completely! this is what we have been asking for. i've been looking for this video all day since i forgot E3 was being broadcast live on G4 until the Sony conference and it did not disappoint.
it's all well and good if they want to rope in a bigger audience but they have to keep doing stuff like this to keep the core gamer happy still. this seriously elevates my entire opinion of the Nintendo conference. THIS GAME WILL BE AWESOME!
I think with the current economy, console manufacturers will only be adding things (like Natal) to their consoles instead of creating new ones. Much easier to wax money from consumers that way.
But this game looks amazing. That kind of acrobatic work is what Samus SHOULD be doing. She's no slow "walking tank"... she's equal parts Tank and Acrobat. That's what makes her so deadly. And the fact that Adam Malkovich has made his official appearance (in living form) just makes this my top game for 2010. That and the fact that we finally get to hear Ms. Aran speak a few words. And her voice is creepy, just like it should be.
Thank fuck for this!! This is how Metroid should have been in 3D! So glad Retro Studios is not on board. I absolutely agree with you that Samus is no tank, like the games of yore by Retro Studios.
I'm very excited! THIS is good news and finally an incentive to get my hands on a Wii console.
Rod, I think you missed back in the older, Pre-Prime Metroids, Samus still collected a massive amount of energy; big, massive guns; a plethora of missiles; and several other types of power-ups. Samus could take a hit from just about anything, keep walking as if nothing had happened. "Tank" rather fits her well.
Give Retro Studios a break. I think they did a wonderful job with the Prime series. It's just harder to convey a lot of acrobatic movement in a first-person scenario without giving the player seizures or vertigo.
@Descender- which may say that first-person wasn't the best venue for Metroid. Not that I didn't enjoy the Primes- I loved them- but they felt a little too slow for Samus. They got the tank part right (because she IS a tank), but they didn't get the acrobat part. What I've seen so far of this game seems to capture both.
If it were on 360 or PS3 you would have to make the following adjustments:
Reds are to replaced with browns. Purples are to be replaced with grays. Samus would have to fight without her helmet on and with short, cropped hair. There would have to be at least one chainsaw.
Is this a straight up action game instead of a exploration type game? Either way I'm cool with it. Its going to be nice to see more the the Metroid universe.
There were times I was playing MP3 and when I saw the suit in the transition from first person to morph ball, I thought, "Why can't you just stay in third person?!"
yes this is why i didn't sell my Wii. after last years presentation (if you can even call it that) i knew they had to have something big and i gotta tell ya, i'm even more excited for this than Super Mario Galaxy 2. this looks almost too badass to be a Nintendo game. they have really outdone themselves this time.
i dont expect it until holidays 2010 since their big name games always seem to get delayed just like Sony's but it will be awesome when it gets here.
can't see the video till I get home. I'm dying to know: does this look mor like a Prime game or like a proper Metroid translated to 3D?
The old games are some of my favorites of all time, and I didn't care for the Prime series, because they just didn't feel like Metroid to me. I've been waiting for a proper 2D to 3D 3rd person style Metroid game since N64. I hope this one ends up being more Metroidy than Prime. Still, I'll be buying the Trilogy new play control Prime when it comes out in a couple months to give the series a second chance.
It's definitely not Prime. Much closer to a true Metroid 3D game. Not that I didn't like the Primes, but I think this one portrays Samus' awesomeness in a much better fashion.
ooohhh... I dunno... It looks far more third person to me from the trailer... that one first person shot didn't look like real gameplay to me, and all of that third person stuff looked a lot closer to old Metroid than Prime. It does look they injected it with quite a bit of Japanese. After this trailer, I might just let my hopes get high.
I think the trailer makes the gameplay look closer to the original Metroids. So for storyline, well, the originals didn't have a ton of story going on. There was the base storyline that started and ended each game, and they tied together, but for the most part, the games were just pure awesome exploration and action between the story elements that happened at the beginning and ending of each game. I'd expect a newer game to try to inject way more story throughout, so in that sense, I'd say it looks less classic Metroid, but I don't hold that against them.
I held the drastic changes they made to the core gameplay against them going from Super Metroid to Prime. I know Prime is an incredibly popular series, but I could never enjoy it because of the sheer fact that they changed so much about what I liked from the previous games. I thought they could have done a much better job of translating the classics to 3D. Prime just didn't feel like Metroid to me. Instead, it felt like an atypical first person game that borrowed elements from the Metroid universe.
This trailer looks like a much closer translation. I'm getting giddy going on this tangent... :P
