Am I the only one who doesn't feel like this has anything in common with the classic Metroid series?

Take Super Metroid as an example: it was a game dominated mood, the strange inhuman landscapes, the long strained silences punctuated by bizarre creatures and the ruins of an impossibly ancient civilization. It's a masterpiece of pace and atmosphere. And while it's a platformer in terms of gameplay, and Samus does indeed become a well-armed tank, these facts don't make a Metroid game. We already have lots of well-warmed heroes and antiheroes. Super Metroid specifically shares much in common with a horror story, and a hero's tale, and dystopian science fiction.

The Prime series, if nothing else, understood that mood and atmosphere are central to Metroid. It's what made the classics great. For that matter, it's what makes the Prime games great. I don't see anything in this trailer except for guns and explosions. Often in slow-motion. People talking earnestly saying nothing in particular. Badass? Maybe. And yeah, Team Ninja in the Metroid universe probably WILL be fun. But I fail to see how it's closer to classic Metroid unless in some very superficial sense.

Plus, I can always just watch 300.

yeah, that atmosphere was one of the things I really like about the prime series, especially when exploring the phenandra drifts. that music used to be very soothing, at least until a sheegoth attacked. but remember that the purpose of a trailer is to create hype, and that these quiet moments tend to be overlooked and left out of trailers. of course, it's possible that there aren't any quiet moments or ancient ruins in this new game, in which case we will just have to enjoy the action as we would in any non-Metroid game.

You're definitely not the only one, N.D. I read thourgh the entire thread of comments hoping to one like yours, one that expressed the same feeling I had of "Hmm, someone did a full Metroid reskin of some childish Michael Bay style "I'M SO BADASSSSS" game.

Kung Fu movies are super, super awesome. But they are not Metroid games.

I really hope people are right, that this is just a trailer and they were trying to win over weird, twitchy, muscle-bound (in their imaginations) gamers. That there are actual Metroid-y parts, in equal measure to this testosto-fest, in the actual game.

I really, really hope.

But I can't say I'm optimistic.
