Sony bringing PSP Go! October 1 for $249 in North America

We heard from Sony at its E3 press conference that it won't "replace" the PSP-3000 or UMD, it's 50 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the original PSP. All future retail titles will have retail and PlayStation store release. Japan can look for it Nov. 1 for ¥26,800.

That's a lot more expensive than a regular PSP-3000 that's for true
MaRRODkez @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:06PM
But why? I haven't been super close attention to the Go news, but beyond the wifi I heard it has, why is it more expensive?
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:45PM
Probably the 16gb internal storage.
Josh @ Jun 2nd 2009 5:12PM
PSP-3000 = $170
16GB Memory Stick = $100
$270 vs. $250
Sounds reasonable to me.
aristokrat @ Jun 2nd 2009 9:08PM
Just bought a 16 GB memory stick for $32, so they're not that expensive anymore.
Caveman @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:49PM
That's too expensive for me. Rather get a Zune HD, iPod Touch or even a Xbox 360 or Wii.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:51PM
Really? An iPod Touch?? A 16gb iPod Touch is $299...for $50 less you get music, video, REAL GAMES, and everything else the iPod Touch has.
Caveman @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:57PM
Yeah, but with the touch I also get a real web browser, a huge selection of music and video to purchase, not to mention the UI on the Touch is light years ahead of the XMB. Looking at photos is great on the Touch with the touch screen. The process to put my media on the Touch is a lot easier.
Not to mention all the thousands of apps already available on the Touch. There is instant messenger on the Touch.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:58PM
I will stick with the iTunes store and Peggle. Its a lot more portable than this will be. When it hits a better price point I'm in.
Neil @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:06PM
iTunes music library is DRM free so you can use the music on any device....including the psp.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:10PM

1) well you got it on the browser
2) you can put the same DRM free music from iTunes right on your PSP so that point is moot. plus they just announced the Video store is on the PSP now too.
3) the Touch UI is flashier (and has touch) but as far as functionality, PSP still gets the job done
4) they just announced the Media Go app for putting stuff on your PSP so you can't say how easy it is yet without actually trying it first
5) and the Touch has it as far as apps too.
so it's really not a bad deal at all and they both definitely have their strong points. i used my PSP for a couple years as my primary MP3 player and the only reason i stopped using it was because it was just too big (got a Zune to replace it). but for a gaming device to do all that stuff is pretty good for $249.
aggrazel @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:29PM
Yup. Too little. Too late. Too expensive.
Sony has lost this battle to Apple and Nintendo.
iluvmyzune @ Jun 2nd 2009 4:16PM
i know. it makes no sense. They make it cheaper to make by having the exact same hardware. No umd means cheaper to make and better battery. $250 for a 4+ year old system????
Jono @ Jun 2nd 2009 6:08PM
If you buy an iPod touch, you have no need for a Zune HD. Let's face it, the iPod touch is massively better than anything Microsoft can come with since the App store has had quite some time for a great deal of Apps.
I already have an iPhone and i'm mesmerized by the Sony Mylo. I mean Sony PSP Go! This will be my second PSP purchase. I wish it was more rectangular though, I dislike the figure 8 shape it takes on after sliding it out so you have access to the controls.
Olicon @ Jun 2nd 2009 7:35PM
I think PSP Go will also sport much longer battery life than any MP3 players out there.
And the final nail in the coffin for me is the ability to interface with PS3--so that you can stream in media via wifi, rather than having to synch up with your computer all the time.
I think the next Zune might be able to do that too.
game xpert @ Jul 31st 2009 10:08PM
really? with i have an ipod touch and it is good.....for music. with this psp you get music FULL games not just apps, and a huge selection of titles. if you still rather an xbox 360 or Wii i say get the xbox360. trust me
Dale @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:49PM
$250? Seriously? BAH.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:50PM
I'm thinking this will be a day 1 purchase for me. I sold my old PSP because it's just to big. You can't really fit it in your pocket, so the only time I used it was in the car when I wasn't driving...which is just about never. Can't wait!
crazypenguin @ Jun 2nd 2009 5:46PM
Vote my comment down too, but i don't see an issue with the price. i was expecting 300 if it had 16 gigs of storage. might be a day 1 purchase, depends on how the platform develops till october.
Dartmerc @ Jun 2nd 2009 8:02PM
Yeah, it's certainly on my list. Jack spelt it out during the keynote - it's for people that want something light and convenient, and not have to worry about physical media.
That is me.
muir666 @ Jun 24th 2009 10:08AM
It would be on my list but $249 is 178EU which shud make it £152 for me yet they say it will be the same in europe as america. someone please explain that reasoning
handlas @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:50PM
ya...far too expensive. But I don't care about handhelds anyway. So lucky me?
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:50PM
I'll hold off on a PSP2 I think...
I didnt even pay for a launch PSP-1000
charlie b. @ Jun 2nd 2009 5:37PM
i hear that. plus, i still got plenty of UMDs that i still love to play. what am i supposed to do with them?
Richard @ Jun 2nd 2009 7:15PM
This isn't a PSP2
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 2nd 2009 7:48PM
I KNOW its not a PSP2....which is why I said I'll WAIT for a PSP2..
Richard @ Jun 3rd 2009 2:31AM
I'm looking at what you said right now.
"I'll hold off on a PSP2 I think..."
Implying that this is in fact the second PSP iteration. Are people blind? I don't know why I got voted down.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:46AM
So maybe I should have said "I'll hold off FOR a PSP2"
I guess you got downvoted cause people knew what I meant
mr nimblewick @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:54PM
And it's still going to look like that?
chilaxin5 @ Jun 2nd 2009 10:09PM
LOL.
Kinsey @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:54PM
I agree thats it is pricey nor will I plan on buying one, but everyone has to remember it has 16 gigs of memory.
fanboi @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:16PM
to think that the DSi is cheaper and has some actual improvements
cruznik71450 @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:19PM
I love my DSi. Very nice for when I went to the Rock Hall.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:55PM
God damn sony. Digital download device for that much? Looks like it will be a wait till it drops to the 150-199 mark. They could kill with a lower price point.
kidvalor @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:56PM
I will buy one only if the downloadable games are cheaper than the UMD... but we all know thats not gonna happen
Latin_Trident @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:57PM
i can buy a shotgun for that price
richard @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:47PM
and what hold up a game stop??
Rod @ Jun 3rd 2009 2:08AM
Sounds like a fun new game. "Sony Executive Hunt™".
D_Average @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:57PM
Ouch! At that price, I better be able to make some phone calls or somthin. Oh wait, it'll have skype support. I'm sold.
Massmass @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:57PM
lol, wow another dropped hail mary pass...
If it truly costs more than $200 to make they should have just developed a PSP 2.
This is just a completely ridiculous price point for technically old hardware wrapped in a new form factor that may legitimately cost more to make, but why bother.
mcdull @ Jun 2nd 2009 4:05PM
There are $200 components in an iPhone and they sell it for $600
Cost and Price is not always related.
Massmass @ Jun 2nd 2009 4:23PM
No? Really? Wow, such insight...
The point is, you're paying a premium for something that doesn't deserve a premium. This doesn't have much style. It doesn't have much of anything going for it considering how old the PSP is now.
Sony had a chance to kick some ass with a PSP 2 (again it could have been done near this price point) and all they did was a feeble slap.
shawn @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:58PM
ok how many versions of the psp are gonna be released
Apollo @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:58PM
*In Kaz Hirai voice*
TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS!
deaftly @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:59PM
Smaller, very little space, your umd's won't mean shit and more expensive then the better models. Way to go Sony.
TTownEP @ Jun 2nd 2009 11:46PM
Well if you already have UMDs, you already have an old PSP. Play them on that.
CaramelZappa @ Jun 2nd 2009 2:59PM
This handheld generation is just too expensive. My original GBC was just $70. Now nintendo wants $180 and sony wants $250 for their new handhelds? Ridiculous.
baby sea tuna @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:00PM
Way too expensive.
kshinabarger @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:05PM
This is a big no for me. Too expensive. I'll keep my PSP-1001 unit and keep waiting for the rest of the UMD games to hit the Wal-Mart $10 bin...
Sean @ Jun 2nd 2009 3:05PM
Wow...$250... Yeah that's a competitive price with a music players but with people mostly seeing this as a game machine (and being sold in the games sections of stores), I don't think that many people are going to shell out for a device that expensive.
Hell, I can get a 360 Premium from Dell cheaper than that. I know it's not the same but still... I was kinda hoping it would be cheaper.
