Why would any sane programmer make a PS3 exclusive these days?

You could state Dave's comments as insane all you want, but its the truth considering the current economic climate.

Usually third party software developers have shareholders to answer to. If a game does not sell well right off the bat then there is hell to pay. Just look at all the Sony exclusives that have come out. Other than MSG4, which is a proven franchise, all Sony exclusives sell like crap for the first few weeks and end up being million unit sellers months later. Sony can afford to do this because most exclusives are made by their in house studios.

There had to have been some type of Payola by Sony here to subsidize the slow sales early on in the game's release, or else it would be suicide for a company like Rock Star to put all their eggs in one basket knowing full well how much time and money is put into PS3 development.

Good for PS3 owners though, hopefully the game is good. Business wise though it could bite Rock Star in the ass if the game isn't a home run.

@firewarrior - Whoa, whoa, there... keep it together. You can say it's insane to make a PS3 exclusive without implying that it's okay to make an Xbox exclusive. Chill the hell out.

@Dave:

Actually Sony paid them nothing for this, Rockstar didn't want to piss Sony off with the GTA IV DLC 360 exclusive stuff, so they negotiated a deal that Sony would get an exclusive IP instead.

This is that IP.

Any developer who realizes how much potential and depth they can put into a ps3 game if they're willing to focus the time, effort, and money towards it.

They can't afford it?

Nah, they probably paid more than Microsoft did for the GTA4 DLC, though where they got the money from is beyond me.

well Jack did say when gta4 was announced to come out for 360 that they "allowed" rockstar to do it because they promised that the next big franchise would be ps3 exclusive.

@Rippedpants

What the hell is Jack insinuating that Sony is like the godfather of gaming?

When I watched Coppola's Godfather I didn't get the impression that the Don was running some mob that was was in third place, playing catch up to another mob that would break down all the time and another one who would shoot you with finger motions.

It seems Mr Tretton is overestimating their influence over third party software developers of late.

I don't think it's big enough to be an exclusive... on a 3rd place, semi-flailing console. Hopefully a timed exclusive.

Also, it will NOT have the same effect at GTA3. GTA3 revolutionized the sandbox genre. I don't think that's possible again.

Man, that announcement was crazy. I love that logo.

I cant believe that didnt even show a teaser. I guess Rockstar North doesnt want anything "fake" to be shown. Thats understandable and respectable. I cant wait for anymore info.

Sony killed it!!!

My moneys on it NOT being Rockstar North as they handle pretty much just the GTA games, im guessing its one of the lesser American Rockstar Studios. There is only so many programmers in edinburgh!

im sorry, but if MGS4, killzone2, littlebigplanet all couldnt come even close to what gta3 did for ps2, then this game wont either. and im not an xbox fanboy, if anything i AM A SONY fanboy but I can be realistic and unbiased too.

Well, I hate to disagree, but GTA3 is much bigger than the MGS and Killzone series. And it sure is hell bigger than a new IP that didn't sell all that well.

On the other hand, I have to question all of this too. Why is this considered a big exclusive? It's a new, unproven IP. Then again, maybe Joystiq just got caught up in the excitement when Sony claims that this game will do as much for the PS3 as GTA3 did for the PS2. Uh huh.

yea but gta 1 and 2 werent as popular as most people think. gta3 was what got the series really going, where as MGS was a much bigger hit and had a much bigger fanbase then gta1/2 had. gta3 wasnt a success because of its fanbase, it was because of its innovative 3d open world. MGS4 was a success but it was still just MGS, and LBP had some success but a lot of people discredit it right away because it looks childish, and killzone2... well.. i thought KZ2 was amazing and should have been a system seller but its just another PS3 exclusive that had good sales, but wasnt anywhere along the lines of gta3, halo2, mgs2 or what not.

After the POS that was GTA4, I won't be buying any rockstar games any time soon, exclusive or not.

What ever happened to the agency? is this the same thing?

I Guess I'll be waiting for uncharted 2 and hopefully another Heavenly Sword before my ps3 gets any serious use again.

Lol look at all the butt-hurt 360 fans!

Geez. Instead of whinging, just get a PS3 already. I've got both consoles, so now I can enjoy Crackdown 2, Mass effect 2 & Left 4 dead 2.

AND THIS GAME.

But I gotta be honest, Sony's done good with this one. Just what they needed.

Across the globe?!... pretty neat. Think about it.... GTA, WORLD. And who says Sony paid them?... maybe Rockstar finally realized the potential of the hardware/Blu-ray?

Cry me a river, fanboys. You know YOU'D WANT IT!! ;]

This is surely a bitter pill to swallow for XBOX360 only owners, but I think recently the Sony Fanboys were much worse then their counterparts. Just looking at some of the comments on kotaku drives me right back here again. What riled them up again? Maybe the first Sony conference in 3 years that can be called a success after the riiidge racer fisaco? Some news worth celebrating? Suggestions?
