The next Castlevania isn't being made by series legend Koji Igarashi -- it's coming from Metal Gear masters Kojima Productions. The game teased as "MASK" on the developer's E3 countdown site is, in reality, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. A 3D actioneer reminiscent of God of War, the game is under development at MercurySteam Entertainment, the studio behind American McGee's Scrapland and Clive Barker's Jericho, with Kojima Productions ... producing it.
There's already some Hollywood talent attached, including British actor Patrick Stewart, best known for his role as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Kojima is not directly producing the game; rather, he's there to "support" MercurySteam on the game, which is slated for 2010 on PS3 and Xbox 360. Looks like Mr. Metal Gear is wasting no time fulfilling his wish to work with Western developers.

I can kind of understand the need for a sequel to MGS3, although even then I think the ending to the game explained enough.. But yes, I agree. I didn't quite understand the amount of praise MGS4 recieved, but it was a fitting end to the series and tied up all the characters stories very nicely.
I don't understand the need for anymore sequels.

I told Joystiq they were developing a Castlevania game when the original countdown was posted and they just blew me off and took down my comment

The genre is games that are like 3D platform action games, except half of the time there are no enemies and you don't know where to go, and the other half of the time the game locks you in a flat area to beat up hordes of repeated enemies while for some reason the music changes.
The genre devours classic franchises that have nothing to do with each other like Rygar, Castlevania, Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, Zelda, and Prince of Persia, and leaves a homogeneous goo in its wake.

I do wonder how strongly reminescent of God of War this will be.

If there were a scale with Zelda on one end and God of War on the other, I'd hope this game would be closer to Zelda.

Normally I'm wary of console castlevanias, but with Kojima overseeing things I'm at ease. Hopefully it's open world like G4 said, that would be instant win.

I am so fucking happy that Kojima is producing this.
IGA has been producing all of the Castlevania games since SotN (except for Circle of the Moon), and I am so fucking sick of him. Pardon my pun, but the Castlevania series needs new blood. Kojima could be the one to bring it back to being a more serious game. I mean come on. It was IGA's vision to make a fucking Castlevania fighting game!
IGA made some amazing games, but he has run out of ideas.

I hope they put some of the same production value into Castlevania as they do Metal Gear games.
The last 2 console outtings were seriously lacking. (Although, I did enjoy Lament of Innocence)

I agree that it was sad to see relatively low-budget attempts at 3D Castlevania on the PS2 and Xbox, but even if they throw a decent amount of money at this one, does a 3D game from a European developer really have any chance of carrying similar aesthetics to the original games?

Ok so this game is being developed by the same people who brought us Crapland (Oh I mean) "Scrapland" and Clive Barker's Jericho? Both of those games were terrible and this same developer is now handling the development of a beloved long time running franchise like Castlevania? Don't get me wrong I think there needs to be a Castlevania game for a next generation console that actually does the series justice but handing it to a lackluster developer like MercurySteam? C'mon! WTF?! There needs to be a Castlevania on the next gen consoles that will bring back the high marks the series deserves. It should be done by the people at Konami who can actually craft high quality work. Why not get some of the folks who worked on MGS4 to craft the game? As long as they don't turn it into a MGS game set in Transylvania it would be interesting to see their take on the series. Kojima simply "producing" the game doesn't give me very high hopes. Back in the day just before Castlevania on PS1 every Castlevania was different and offered new challenges while upping the quality (barring the versions on the N64). The last Castlevania game that was truly awesome was Symphony of the NIght. Unfortunately Koji Igarashi has run that style of gameplay into the ground releasing one DS Castlevania after another with the same borrowed gameplay and only one or two new features and characters to introduce. While I enjoyed those games I'm personally sick of the same style over and over again. Castlevania has the potential to be an incredible 3-D third person game if it's done right. I could see a Castlevania that emulates Devil May Cry and God of War with incredible graphics and a well drawn out story line. Why has nobody tried to do this series justice in 3D in that style? The Castlevanias on PS2/Xbox were HUGE disappointments. I was so tired of running around a really bland landscape only to play a fetch and backtracking type of quest that was SO 2 generations back. The control, gameplay and graphics were uninspired and we all know that towards the later life of both the PS2 and Xbox there were quite a few developers who were really pushing the limits of those consoles and got some pretty incredible stuff on them.
If a third rate developer like MercurySteam is handling this game I already have very low expectations for a true Castlevania experience based off the titles they've already released and I've played. I'll have to revisit the past games to remember when the series was outstanding. I hope these people prove me wrong. If they can pull it off I will take back everything I just said.

I know what you mean but watch the trailer and you will see it's looking really good. Besides, with Kojima on board it lends some credibility to the project. He wouldn't put out a crap product.

Am I alone in thinking this is the best news to come out of E3 this year, period? That trailer looks absolutely great. If the game delivers on even half of that, it'll still be the best 3D Castlevania out there.

This needs to be said; this year is the best E3 Microsoft has EVER had. I won't even begin to list the 21 games I now really very much want, 16 of those brand new to me as of Monday, and one piece of tech that is totally revolutionary.
Insane goodness has been had, and will BE had.
(But where are my demos on Live?)

I have to say, this is a pleasant surprise for me. For the first time ever I can actually say I'm looking forward to a Castlevania game. I wish they would stop ripping off of the Hans Zimmer's Batman soundtrack, though.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow = Best Game coming in 2010. This is from a Castlevania fanatic. I own (in one way or another) every Castlevania game ever made.
I want a 360 Suikoden, but Castlevania will do just nicely.
