Hands-on: God of War III

God of War III is the talk of many here at E3. Why wouldn't it? The solid graphics, the over-the-top gore, the visceral gameplay -- and did I mention the over-the-top gore -- make God of War III one of the most polished and fun games available at the show floor. Yet in spite of its successes, one can't help but think it feels a little too familiar. Perhaps, in many ways, God of War III is playing it a bit too safe, resting on the laurels of its predecessors.
That's not a bad thing per se, but we are an industry that champions innovation. Although God of War III doesn't stray far from the mold, it's still incredible fun and quite possibly the most gut-wretchingly violent game ever created. The creative team behind Kratos' latest are truly sick, devising an endless stream of creative deaths for enemies to suffer. Seeing someone's eye get ripped out may sound cool in SD, but God of War III makes sure you see every gory detail. The camera zooms in, proud to showcase the mutilation of the meticulously modeled and designed characters. There's more than blood that oozes (or explodes) out of these creatures; rather, we see guts and other bodily matter -- all in glorious HD. Kratos will, in the course of one short demo, impale a creature with its own horns, cut a gaping wound into someone's stomach, and rip a man's head off with his bare hands. And we're just scratching the surface.
Gallery: God of War III
It's easy to get caught up in the game's graphic presentation, but God of War III's gameplay still satisfies. Anyone that has played one of the PS2 or PSP games should feel comfortable here, especially as many moves are unsurprisingly transplanted from God of War II. The core battle system was always celebrated for its incredible flexibility: able to attract beginner gamers with its intuitive combat, while still satisfying the hardcore with a robust combo system. God of War III is no different -- we're confident gamers of all skills will still be able to pick up the game and enjoy it.
There are a few new additions to Kratos' repetoire, many of which can be seen in the game's debut trailer. Kratos does have access to giant metal fists which radically transform the pacing of the game's combat. With his default blades, Kratos is quite a fast and nimble character; but with the fists, he becomes a slugger, able to dole out massive damage at the sacrifice of speed. While the button inputs remain the same, the feel and timing are completely different. These appreciable differences in the weapons is one of the reasons why God of War's combat remains so fun, even after so many iterations.
Another fun addition to the combat is a new grab move that allows Kratos to use an enemy as a shield and ram through a large crowd of undead. Kratos can also gain control of a variety of beasts, whether it be harpies that allow Kratos to fly to unexplored areas, or a giant golem that allows Kratos to swipe away at enemies with mindless ease. We've seen this all in the last trailer, and we're glad to report it's as fun as it looks.
It's hard to really find flaws in the E3 demo, but perhaps this should go on record -- the QTEs feel far more difficult to see in this iteration of God of War. Perhaps it's the overwhelming detail on the screen, but it can be easy to miss the button inputs when they appear at the far corners of each screen. Perhaps this is more my problem than the game's, but it certainly felt less intuitive than the on-screen indicators of, say, Heavy Rain.
Yes, God of War III plays it safe, but perhaps it's good to follow the "if it ain't broke" mentality. If God of War III is indeed the last game of the "trilogy," then we see it as a promising last hurrah for the series, and we're eager to get our hands on the game when it ships early next year.

When I first saw the live demo during the SONY press conference, I was like WOW and OMG this game looks stunning!!! The graphic look amazing! And I'm glad that Kratos got some new moves and brutal combos!!!! March 2010 is long but it worths waiting for!
GiggMan @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:25AM
How can you change the gameplay? Honestly I really would like to know.
I guess it's GOW's own fault for having great gameplay to start with.
NaeemTHM @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:46AM
I can see why people would want it to change. I mean we've had three games with identical combat and gameplay. That can get a bit stale after a while. I guess it's the same reason people complain about the Zelda series or teh Haloz.
But honestly, unless they do a DMC3 like revamp, I really don't see anything wrong with the God of War formula.
aristokrat @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:16AM
Definitely agree with you on the point that GOW had great gameplay to start with. In fact, it was so much fun that people were clamoring for more, and that's what II and III gave/are giving them. I don't understand why you'd change it (regardless of if its broken) if that what the general gaming populace is actually asking for. I feel like that's the general point of sequel, something the jaded gaming press overlooks. Mario has been basically the same since the beginning, with refinements and slight expansions, but that's a fun, winning formula and people still want more of it (replaying the same game over and over can only provide so much satisfaction). If you want something different, get a different game.

No, GoW games are always fixed camera and when you play them you'll realise why they are fixed camera. They create a great cinematic feel to the game and they are always posistion perfectly.
Danthok @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:26AM
Give us some in game footage!!! Or at least a new trailer
DeathroW @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:49AM
There already was some in-game footage @ E3.

It looks good but not like Jaffe's hyperbowl a while back.
"I thought GEARS OF WARS 2 looked about as good as a next-gen game could look...."
"I ain't no fan boy but this mother f**king game looks like nothing you've ever played...and you can hold me to that when this thing hits and when they start showing gameplay footage. It looks like a painting come to life- it's THAT good looking"
Pfft!
IMO think it looks good but they could have changed the camera up a bit. Make you closer to teh action.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 3rd 2009 12:00PM
I'll probably still get it but it would have been nice to get a camera and perspective of say...Lost Planet 2?

Perspective of lost planet 2? Behind the shoulder type thing? No thank you. God of War games rely on showing alot of the environment to match the scale of the story. Cutting that out for a more intimate camera view ala Ninja Gaiden would kill the theme.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 3rd 2009 2:35PM
Lost Planet is NOT over-the-shoulder like Gears. I wouldn't want that either. I just want a slightly closer perspective with those same graphics and style. It would look amazing and feel more immersive IMO.

It looks pretty damn good, but I think Uncharted 2 looks WAAAYYY better. I'm stoked for that :D

So it's everything it's supposed to be and more;is funny thought how people say that the gameplay is the same but who in the world fixes things that aren't broken.

game looks awesome...just one minor complaint...now i've never played any of the previous GOW games, and I can't remember if Devil May Cry his this option, but I really hope there's a way to turn off that annoying combo counter that pops up when you kill a number of ppl in succession, then describe how awesome or brutal the kill was...i mean, i just did it...i can see that it was a brutal kill on my own....it just makes the game seem too arcadey in my opinion...kinda like if you killed the enemies, then it said how many points you got for it.
aristokrat @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:07AM
Yet somehow the brutal killing of 1000's of enemies in mere minutes isn't arcadey?
Ashitaka @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:13AM
I thought that too while watching the video!
I mean, I didn't care with the previous games, it is somewhat cool.
But now, in HD? I just want to enjoy the scenery and the gore, I don't want a hud nor some numbers describing my brutal combo!
rich @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:15AM
yes...the brutal killing of 1000's of enemies in mere minutes is arcadey...the combo counter makes it seem too arcadey...the word "too" meaning that I already find it to be arcadey but the combo counter takes it up a notch....in. my. opinion.
HamalSharatan @ Jun 3rd 2009 12:39PM
I don't understand what's the problem.
David @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:39AM
From what I've read in other sites the QTEs are more intuitive in this game than before. That is because the buttons that appear at the edges of the screen correspond to the buttons on the controller (far left: square, far right: circle, and so on) so you don't really have to be looking to know which button to push. If you see a button appearing on the right of the screen with the corner of your eye just press the circle button.

Man if this feels to "samey", I hope I see the same complaint when the galaxy 2 preview goes up. Nintendo never gets bashed for rehashing gameplay elements, it's always everyone else...
redjack @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:54AM
I'm pretty sure you bash Nintendo all the time for the same gameplay and mark it as a rehash. But this is different?
I'm with everyone else on the "if it ain't broke" I'm just saying your arguments on Nintendo threads always turn out hypocritical.
I'm definitely psyched to see the conclusion of the story. It seems like he's doing a little battle in some of the trailers with the titans... did they betray him as well? Will the conclusion of this game be the death of all Gods and Titans leaving man to choose his own fate? It'll be interesting to see. I've loved their take on Greek Mythos.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:00AM
"I'm pretty sure you bash Nintendo all the time for the same gameplay and mark it as a rehash. But this is different?"
I only do that precisely because no one in the media dares to do it for some reason. I realize that the gameplay in god of war 3 is the same, hell I could have told you it was going to be like that before it was even announced. I don't even really care that Nintendo rehashes gameplay, I just want them to be treated like everyone else does.
Hexen @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:11AM
sadly that won't happen, no one in the media would dare to say anything negative about Mario and how the gameplay it's always the same with no new innovation.Nintendo (especially Mario) will always have a free pass while the rest have to deliver fresh gameplay or else.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:17AM
Exactly. When I had galaxy I was looking at the booklet and I said "What the hell? These are the same exact moves I had in Super Mario 64". The only difference was the few costume gimmicks they threw in there like the bee suit.
redjack @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:26AM
They dare to do it. They just never look at it as a disappointment. And true, its bias, but I don't think people can get past the nostalgia or Shiggy's involvement whenever they consider those games. And they're always damned fun. But so is God of War.
My guess is people look at newer IP's and they just want more from them. What could be done with God of War? Aside from getting a statistical mathematician like Richard Garfield involved to make the combo system and use of other weapons insanely intricate and adaptable there's nothing really. They've added riding creatures and some new moves to deal with the sheer onslaught of enemies that come at you.
But is that enough? No. These days nothing is ever enough from a new IP. Its how the industry has geared those games to us.
redjack @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:34AM
"Exactly. When I had galaxy I was looking at the booklet and I said "What the hell? These are the same exact moves I had in Super Mario 64". The only difference was the few costume gimmicks they threw in there like the bee suit."
The gravity elements and the different planets were the innovation. And it was said at the roundtable last night that the sequel will be about 90% new as they have a lot more gravity tricks they'd like to work in and while the first was a broad audience game this one will be harder.
But you're right. Its always jump, hit something on the head and repeat. There's some depth in different challenges but ultimately that's all it is. No combo system or anything of the like.
But trolling Nintendo pages isn't going to change the media bias. Just make more Wii owners come and hang out with you in your threads.
nofriendo @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:42AM
Wow tmac. Way to bring in your nintendo bashing on a article that has nothing to do with nintendo. Your desperate. No one cares.
"tmac can you take out the trash today?"
"How do you expect me to take out the trash when nintendo graphics are so terrible"
MaliceMajorE15 @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:44AM
it really funny how fickle the games journalism industry can be sometimes. gears of war 2 "played it safe" and didnt really deviate gamplaywise or if at all from its predecessor, yet nobody says anything (cept maybe david jaffe in his interview with kotaku) and now people are saying god of war 3 hasnt changed either, implying that it is getting stale or summink.
baby sea tuna @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:03AM
Um, have you ever been on the Internet? If I hear one more person calling Gears 2 "Gears 1.5" I'm gonna jam a Lancer in their grub-hole.
MaliceMajorE15 @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:13AM
lol. i dont know if u are agreeing with me or disagreeing with me but gears 2 wasnt a whole lot different from the first cept for a few new moves and the plot evolved as it should, otherwise its the same. im not saying that that is a bad thing all i was saying is that no-one complained about it and god of war is the same and people are leveling that at it.
however i will conceed that there are more versions of god of war so maybe people are getting bored. good thing this is the concluding part
Badboy1979 @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:19AM
I think he's saying that Gears 2 did get alot of complaints for being "almost the same" as Gears 1 (aka calling it Gears 1.5). The same was said of a lot of games based off of successful sequels. (ie. Halo 3, Resident Evil 5, etc.)
I'm all down for not changing the ingredients if you've got gameplay that makes your fanbase happy.
Personally, I'm looking forward to God of War 3 and i'm hoping they do release a version with 1 and 2 included on the disc since I've never had the chance to play either.
MaliceMajorE15 @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:25AM
oh ok. but my original comment was levelled at journalists. they'll give gears high marks even though its the same game with another broken multiplayer componant that dint work for weeks after the release. if it was any other game it wouldnt have scored as highly. so it appears for certain titles they are willing to overlook things. to be honest i wouldnt be suprised if there was some kind of payola involved. but ill leave that to the conspiricy theorists

Blech. That sounds way to gory and over the top for my tastes.

I guess it's good that Madworld isn't on a HD console then, huh?
tmacairjordan87 @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:02AM
Madworld's on the Wii, so the gore's ok baby sea tuna. That's how nintendo fanboys work.
samfish @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:15AM
I can tolerate MadWorld because it's so stylized. I've said before though that I'd prefer it if the game weren't as over the top violent.
Seeing a swash of red pixels is fine to me. Seeing glistening intestines is gross and crosses the line.
Ashitaka @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:20AM
"Seeing a swash of red pixels is fine to me".
It seems that pixels is all you wii owners can see when playing your console aha xD
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:34AM
God of War isn't stylized? Are you afraid that the incredibly accuracy of it will give you flashback to your own time fighting the Titans on Mount Olympus?
It's not like this is Postal. You're a powder-white guy who has been a god at times and you're fighting in fantasy worlds.
