I think it's pretty clear I was referring to the depiction of the violence being stylized, not the games entire art style.

"I can tolerate MadWorld because it's so stylized. I've said before though that I'd prefer it if the game weren't as over the top violent.
Seeing a swash of red pixels is fine to me. Seeing glistening intestines is gross and crosses the line."

Really? If anything what I saw in the trailer was scaled back compared to what I was hoping for. I heard there was going to be a gutting physics engine in the game and was hoping to see intestines spill out of a centaur and make a nice pile on the floor. Didn't see that though and any organs getting ripped out disappeared in seconds. I guess its a bit too much to hope to see entrails shrewn everywhere but really, scaled back compared to the hype.

"The solid graphics, the over-the-top gore, the visceral gameplay -- and did I mention the over-the-top gore -- make God of War III one of the most polished and fun games available at the show floor."
Graphics + gore do not equal "fun" in my opinion. I feel kind of sorry for anyone who feels that they do.

I think you missed the part in that quote where it applauds the gameplay. While God of War is over the top and gory it backs it up with good gameplay.

You see? It can work in both ways for people. People have different tastes, no matter how much it bothers you or me.

I agree, the people that grew up with this series did just that...Grew up. Sex, blood, and swearing is cool and adds to the realism but why go "over the top" with it. Gameplay should sell games and fortunately GOW has that.

While I do enjoy the God of War franchise, I hope this game ads some more elements to the gameplay rather than its basic lather/rinse/repeat gameplay (hack/slash/button-mash).

I'm not trolling, I was merely using his example in the opposite way. I like colorful platforming games like Ratchet, I'm just explaining there are people who don't like that.

I know several people personally who don't like to play colorful looking, maybe slightly kiddy looking games. Now, your first thought may be that they're ignorant. But are they any more ignorant than the person who comes on here saying "Oh I'm not playing Killzone 2 because it's too dark and grey"?

@ Jason Statham:
That is a straight copy and paste job there, no editing. Later in the article, it mentions (in a "by the way" sort of tone) that the gameplay is also good.

Screw the first one, you need to beat the *second one*. Those spinning Hades-blades in GoW were almost enough to make a normal person snap the disc in half. GoW II is a huge improvement over the first in almost every way.

Like Malice said...And I will say again...You can not almost never argue for innovation when you see a series of Halos and Gears of War selling and get praised at the end of the day...They are always the same...bar the interesting add ons none the less...Horde Mode, Map creation... Yea...With all the polish and intricacy this Dev. team can do with GOW...No one is going to argue..

When I was watching this, Uncharted, and Halo ODST at the Microsoft Keynote, there was only one thought in my head:

Yeah, the graphics are superb, but I'm so bored watching this.

I guess one of the creators of Heavy Rain was right. I'm getting older, and these types of games are starting to lose their appeal for me, especially since there are a surplus of these games out on the market (even if this game is far superior than the rest). In all honesty, I'm not excited about the next shooters and stuff. I'm having a hard time enjoying Killzone 2 right now, but I had a wonderful experience with Flower. I'm really looking forward to the new games that will give me a new experience, however imperfect it may be (i.e. Mirror's Edge), while I find myself bored with sequels that are only trying to perfect a formula that's been done for years now.

You're looking forward to Mirror's Edge mostly because you haven't played it is my guess. Wait until you have the helicopter shooting at you and you can't do anything about it.

That game is effed.

^I'm not saying I'm looking forward to Mirror's Edge, I'm just saying I'm looking forward to games as innovative AS Mirror's Edge.

And I've played the game before. Really the only part that frustrated me was that last room. but as I said before, even though it was imperfect, I still enjoyed the game a lot more than other highly praised games simply because it was a new experience, and didn't "play it safe" and just polish a formula that's been done before many times.

After watching the gameplay videos on Gametrailers, I also have to say that what I was expecting and what I saw did bring down my expectations. I have all GOD games and I still occasionally go back and play them because I like the combat so much but when watching the GT trailers, I did get that feeling that I have played this game countless times already(the perils of playing a series to much I guess). Probably the reason why is that the blades of chaos from the videos I saw do the same combos.

I also know the game is 9 months out but the graphics though up to par did not separate from the other games coming out with similar gameplay.

As far as purchasing the game, it's still day one for me but I have never been the one to gloss over a game shortcomings. The criticizing about GOWIII are the same when Ninja Gaiden came out and they were spot on with the fact that if you played the game, wasn't much difference in gameplay but the games were still a lot of fun.

The developers here have the same problem. They got it right the first time but finding ways to make it better or keep the same level is tough so they play it safe.

Well I think of this way: The 3 God of War games are supposed to be taking place one after the other with little to no pause in the story, right? So why would Kratos all of the sudden change his fighting style now? It's been working for him so far. I think you have to think about it in terms of the game's timeline, and not real life's. I think he's going to display enough new tricks and tactics to keep his enemies guessing but ultimately stick to what's gotten him through the last two games.

If you don't like GoW3 because it's too familiar, then how did you get through the day when Microsoft announced Halo 3 AND 4 in the same keynote? How about Super Mario Galaxy 2 where Miyamoto indicated the plan was to take the existing levels and just create new goals (i.e. move the cheese)? Note now that Miyamoto says that's changed and now almost 90% of the levels in SMG2 are new! At least 100% of the levels in God of War 3 are new.

Personally, I'm very ready for an HD version of God of War. Maybe it'll be time to retire the franchise after that, I dunno.

Since I've never played the games before it won't be stale to me. That being said though I think it would have been nice to keep the core gameplay and perhaps add a few new elements to it as well...

Still though between this and Final Fantasy XIII Versus it's gonna be hard for me to not get a ps3....

I'd like to see GoWIII use the motion controls that are coming out early next year. That would be a great reason for a delay. You might look like an asshole swinging your arms around in your living room, but I bet you'd end up with the greatest piece of exercise gaming ever.

Why do cretins want to change GoWIII into first person shooter? What was showed was all us people wanted, us who actually liked the previous two games(not you lame ass journos who didnt even finish it on easy).
New weapons, new abilities, new mechanics. All wrapped up in glorious HD in dark God of War universe. You cretins need to STFU before you ruin another franchise, like you ruined Resident Evil.

And once again, being "more of the same" isn't a bad thing. In fact, I think I made note of the cool new things you'll be doing in the game. Why do you think this is a negative preview at all? /confused

Champions innovation....really? Call of Duty says hi. No, putting it in a modern setting is not innovation. Resident Evil says hi. Let me stand still and shoot at you while you keep coming.
The majority of gamers, and game sites DO NOT champion innovation. You will revere the tried and true and familiar. More Mario and Zelda, wow that's soooo new. Look more Metal Gear.....sweet it's like nothing ever before it. RTS?!?!?!?!? Man that's so original and never been seen. We need more FPS people......./sarcasm

IT"S A SEQUEL!

(Meaning we get to see Kratos or Mario or Zelda do exactly what they do but in new places! If you want a game in which the basic gameplay elements have changed then you do not want a sequel, you want a brand new game! The only real problem with Nintendo, or anyone else guilty of this, is that they keep giving us brand new games but then slap a mascot like Mario or Zelda onto it. I mean, are there ever going to be any new characters? Remember, I am not against sequels; they should keep making Marios and Zeldas forever. But major innovation is not for sequels - unless it doesn't change the basic gameplay elements. Example: A 3D sequel to a 2D game, such as Mario 64. You still jump, open boxes, collect coins, fight koopas and such, and rescue the princess. That's a sequel!)

Just to clarify, God of War 3 will be amazing. I'm saying only that it is a sequel so it doesn't have to be innovative.

I'm definitely looking forward to GOW 3 and it's collectior's edition (with games 1+2) but I'm a little worried. The games looks seriously gory.On the one hand gore in games = AWESOME but on the other hand playing GOW 3 when it comes out, being addicted to it and then imagining all of your family anfd friends being ripped to shreds by Kratos. The latter. Not so good.
