Hands-on: Lost Planet 2

But at E3, I spent a few minutes with Lost Planet 2, and was actually really impressed. Not sure I'm ready to call myself a total convert, but I'm certainly ready to give the series another chance.
Gallery: Lost Planet 2
I was grouped with three other attendees, all of us thrown into a lush jungle and pitted against a mutli-legged beast (notice I'm not quantifying the number of legs. I really need to start taking better notes).
The animal seemed insurmountable, until I noticed the glowing spots at its joints a convention from Lost Planet 1 that I apparently didn't make it deep enough to discover. After that, it was a simple matter of blasting away with the multitude of weapons scattered about.
My favorite was a very powerful feeling rocket launcher that spiraled satisfyingly into the creatures legs with an explosion of orange goop. Or at least it was my favorite until I climbed into an armored mech that let me wield both a machine gun and a massive shotgun. It got even better when one of my team clung to the side of the mech, aiding in the monster murder.
The isolation I felt with the last game was completely done away with, and watching three other people swinging and hovering around as we worked together to bring the animal down was undeniably exhilarating.
It was a thin vertical slice, but if it's any indication for what we can expect when it drops, you can count me in.

The isolation and lack of hope was what made the other game so enjoyable...
DeepFriedSushi @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:52PM
same, it was like you were alone in the elements.
LP1 is bashed more than it deserved graphics were great, motion blur was phenomenal, gameplay was solid, tons of weapons and mechs.
Levi @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:17PM
Agreed.
Boff @ Jun 4th 2009 4:07AM
Absolutely. Loved the huge bosses too.
pkilla @ Jun 4th 2009 11:47AM
Yeah I have to also agree. Not sure why lots of people didn't like it. The story was lacking but the game play was absolutely fun. Isn't that 80-90% the point of a game?
Shagittarius @ Jun 4th 2009 4:49PM
Yes, Lost Planet was a very good game , not sure why so many people seem to not get it.
Destron @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:37PM
I hope they do a competent port this time around - the Windows port of LP1 was horrific.
"Hey Bob! Can you get this thing on PC? You have till five!"
Rodrigo (revenge of the ps3) @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:40PM
i didn't liked the 1st one either, but i might try this when it comes out on ps3... while that happens i will try the 1st one again on the 360
toonces @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:41PM
Please tell me they aren't letting the cheating PC dick knuckles play w/ 360 users on live.
BIGGEN (LIVE-PSN: BIGGEN1103) @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:42PM
i'm hoping the same thing too
BIGGEN (LIVE-PSN: BIGGEN1103) @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:41PM
20 minutes? that's a travesty. i'll admit, the campaign was lackluster, but still fun. so i take it you didn't get into the multiplayer because that's where it bred n butta was. actually, i still play Colonies Edition everyday ;D
Lori @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:45PM
you might want to tag this as PLAYSTATION 3 as well, as the game was confirmed to come to ps3 today, hell, even features on the PS.blog.
j.howlett @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:55PM
i liked the snow in the first one of the little that i played. i was just confused after it was ported to ps3 and the 360 got a newer version that didn't let you play with others that had the originals. i put it off and forgot abot it. maybe i'll double dip when this comes out
Travis @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:59PM
Wasn't this supposed to come to the marketplace during E3 (The demo I mean) or was that another game?
Jonathan @ Jun 4th 2009 4:37AM
I recall hearing that as well. They may have decided against releasing one, but I'm hoping that's not the case as I'd like to try out the new co-op mechanics ASAP.
AoE @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:23PM
another chance would imply you gave it a chance the first time around ;) 20 minutes doesn't even get you through the first level, does it? And how many multiplayer matches (the true fun of the game) could one possibly squeeze into a 20 minute session? I am guessing none...
Anyhow, good to know there will hopefully be another LP player when 2 rolls around! :)
Alex @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:52PM
Did it have the wonderful Capcom fight mechanics where you fall on your ass every time you get hit? And then stand up, get hit, and fall again? and again? and again?
Levi @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:21PM
Wtf is with all the Lost Planet hate?? The fact that the game didn't feel like a clone of every other game was a good thing. I liked the snowy setting. The formula I blasting through enemies with minimal damage to beat the boss at the end of the level was very old school but worked well. In fact, I think the boss battles are what made the game so good.
Gillfigno @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:26PM
Lost Planet is easily one of the best games of this generation.
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:44PM
+1
Agreed on everything you said, LP was sweet. It felt new and fresh. I bought it first day it came out and had a blast with it. It had some very impressive enemy animations and some of the biggest bosses ever. LP2 is looking 10x better overall so yeah, first day purchase again baby!
xFenixKnightx @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:40PM

Tom @ Jun 4th 2009 1:07PM
Then why bother commenting?
St!nkyP33t @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:27PM
nothing says "credible games journalism" like giving a multi million dollar, pretty popular game with solid single and multiplayer 20 minutes of your Glorious life and then proceeding to talk about it like your opinion is useful.
you do post on a credible games news blog/site however, so i assume not every game you see or play is exactly what you were looking for, and i suggest you maybe not take on news assignments that you dont give F$&k all about.
at least the post got me to sign up for comments :)
arrness @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:33PM
the main focus here is reporting on lost planet 2, i dont find it so wrong that he said he didn't like lost planet 1, judging by a lot of comments, which are directed towards how much people didn't like lost planet 1.
i think it makes people who didn't like #1 be at least slightly more interested in 2
FritzTHECAT @ Jun 4th 2009 1:13PM
I have no problem with people liking or not liking things they are talking subjectively about.. But by his own admission he has no idea what even happened in the game past the initial game controls. Thats really all I meant to say.
For example, I was slamming on the RedFaction demo so badly the other day after playing it for about 10 minutes..., until a friend came by, played it, got the mech, started blowing crap up.. and then i was like.. wow.. i was wrong, while maybe this game isn't neccessarily my bag, i really did just write it off by only giving it a small amount of my attention.
now imagine if i was writing my opinion on that game on a gaming blog.
oh wait.. I am!!
arrness @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:26PM
ive been watching this game for a long time
most likely day one for me
arrness @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:29PM
also i dont know why everyone is complaining about it not being a snowy environment, from the end of the first game, what do you expect?
jungle environment looks GREAT.
moby @ Jun 4th 2009 12:47AM
I really enjoyed LP1 except for the almost impossible boss scenes on the hardest mode.
I'm eagerly awaiting v2!
Alex @ Jun 4th 2009 1:16AM
oh yeah, bring back the big hootered girl too, perhaps in a bikini since she'll be in a jungle?
Danielnator @ Jun 4th 2009 1:16AM
YES YES YES GIVE IT TO ME NOWW
