Hands-on: Lost Planet 2

I'll admit, I wasn't a huge fan of Lost Planet. No, sorry, I should say that I wasn't a big fan of the 20 minutes of Lost Planet I played before I got too bored to continue. It seemed too clunky during my brief time with the game, and the snowy wasteland just wasn't inviting enough for me to invest much more time into it.

But at E3, I spent a few minutes with Lost Planet 2, and was actually really impressed. Not sure I'm ready to call myself a total convert, but I'm certainly ready to give the series another chance.

I was grouped with three other attendees, all of us thrown into a lush jungle and pitted against a mutli-legged beast (notice I'm not quantifying the number of legs. I really need to start taking better notes).

The animal seemed insurmountable, until I noticed the glowing spots at its joints a convention from Lost Planet 1 that I apparently didn't make it deep enough to discover. After that, it was a simple matter of blasting away with the multitude of weapons scattered about.

My favorite was a very powerful feeling rocket launcher that spiraled satisfyingly into the creatures legs with an explosion of orange goop. Or at least it was my favorite until I climbed into an armored mech that let me wield both a machine gun and a massive shotgun. It got even better when one of my team clung to the side of the mech, aiding in the monster murder.

The isolation I felt with the last game was completely done away with, and watching three other people swinging and hovering around as we worked together to bring the animal down was undeniably exhilarating.

It was a thin vertical slice, but if it's any indication for what we can expect when it drops, you can count me in.
