y does it seem like every game is being compared to GOW? Darksiders, Lord of Shadows, this.........
I know GOW is the best but games should stand on their own merits

It's not his fault that the game plays and looks like GOW. You are reading James Ransom-Wiley's "IMPRESSIONS" of Dante's Inferno. So his impression after playing is that it is a lot like GOW, because it is. I don't see anything wrong about that. It gives us gamers an idea of how the game will play. What else should he say??

Wow, could you reference God of War any more in that 'preview'? I mean, I know it has a lot that's similar, but try to focus on the merits of the game.

Merits? Its God of War with different character and enemy skins! Thats all i need to know, I dont care if its a direct ripoff of GoW because GoW is amazing and the more games like it means thats more amazingness to be had! Thats merit enough for me!

Dante's is developed by the same team that made Dead Space right? That alone is reason to be excited. :)

Honestly I think God of War started a revolution in gaming.

These past years we've moved further away from the basics and the essence of good old classical games but God of War bought back a very effective and simple combat system and a great story to boot to make an incredible hack and slash.

I'm all for these clones as long as their high quality and as fun to play as God of War 3.

After all God of War 3 is a long while off and it's the end of a trilogy so at least I won't miss it as much when its gone.

I remember when I first got GoW. It was the day of release and I hadn't heard much about it at the time (maybe because I wasn't paying much attention). I was captivated by it in the first level when you fight the Hydra throughout the whole stage......then you had sex afterward.

I think what started that "revolution" was DMC as it had the fun hack and slash combat and came out earlier.

The God of War series is much more consistent in sheer quality than the Devil May Cry series.

I hope the God of War series doesn't end up going the same way as Devil May Cry.

You can argue which game is better on and off but I don't think you can argue they tried to leech the series and ended up having a few bad results pretty much destroying all the significance and relevancy that game had in the genre.

I apologize for my previous comment but what you said makes absolutely zero sense considering that the only game in the series that was poorly received/made was the 2nd one. The rest have gotten high 8's 9's in all of the major reviews I've seen. There have only been 4 games and one bad one doesn't make the series irrelevant at all.

fred I don't think the DMC series is particularly bad but I'm making the point in 4 tries they've only made one game that scored in the 90's in the series. Thats a 25% success rate if they were shooting for 90's for all three games.

On the other hand God of War 1 scored a 94 on Metacrtic and God of War 3 a 93 which is a pretty consistent high score.

Devil May Cry was an undisputed classic of the genre recieving a top ten scoring for the genre of 94 on Metacritic. DMC2 to fell to 68 with DMC3 and DMC4 both hitting 84.

The diffference is the score Devil May Cry achieved is one of the highest in the genre and since then the series has consistently got worse.

If God of War 3 was to dip below the high mid low 90's it would be considered inferior to the original 2 and the series would be going backwards not forwards.

The difference between a 80 and a 90 does not make a game "irrelevant" at all

"DMC2 to fell to 68 with DMC3 and DMC4 both hitting 84."
"the series has consistently got worse."

DOES NOT COMPUTE

The real world difference between a 84 and a 94 is huge.

If you do a ranking of the best games in the genre a 94 scores right in the top ten. On the other hand an 84 wouldn't be in the top 50 and maybe not even in the top 100.

When your talking about points at the higher scale 1 point has a lot more significance from 81 to 90 than it does from 1 to 2.

And sorry for posting again, I know I'm probably spamming your inbox with stupid internet arguments but I seem to have trouble thinking clearly in the morning.

The original claim I made was not about the overall quality of the DMC series but rather that it was the original game (DMC1) that sparked a renewed interest in hack and slash combat.

As for the ratings you really can not judge the quality of a game based on the metascores. There is a consideration of appeal; the DMC series, especially after 1, has less western appeal then GOW which is focused on myths and figures familiar to a western audience. There are many reviewers who were turned off by the difficulty of the third as well and their scores reflected that. DMC3 was the best in the series according to many fans yet got a lower score on metacritic.
Yet they (the third and fourth) still got scores from major reviewers in the 80's and 90's and the 4th sold over 2 mil.
I am not arguing that one is better than the other, I happen to love both game series, I just don't think that your claim that the series is either decreasing in quality or irrelevant is obvious from the evidence.

The ripping-off doesn't bother me so much. If it's fun, has a great story, and great graphics, then everything is copacetic. After all, even if this is a clone of God of War, it is easily arguable that God of War is a clone (albeit more advanced) of the original Devil May Cry, even down to the collection of red orbs. Mind you, I'm not saying anything bad about either game. I love Devil May Cry, I love God of War, and maybe I'll love this. I'm just saying.

They can copy the gameplay, but can they match the whole package? The best thing about God Of War (and MGS) is the epic story, dont think any video game characters have come close to matching the sheer awesomeness of Kratos and Solid Snake / Big Boss (except maybe Kain and Garrett).

This is kind of what I figured with Dante's Inferno. It's a good thing for fans of the genre and people without a PS3. They did a good job improving the survival horror genre with Dead Space with small additions like being able to run and shoot so maybe they can bring something fresh to dethrone the god of war.

Of course it will have a great story, it does have a very rich lore and story to work with. I mean the story has been an important piece of work for coming up on a 1000 years.

Depending on how they handle the material, and translate it to gameplay, traveling the layers of Hell seems quite epic. The story and the material is there, and has held the test of time longer than any video game character. The question is how they handle and translate that story.

this is a pathetic ripoff of god of war. i mean sure it could still be great, since god of war is great, but judging from what we've seen of this game so far, one might believe that the developers don't have an original thought in their heads. it's too bad, since these guys made dead space, so obviously they possess great talent.

Well, it's not like GOW invented the 3rd person action genre - it succeeded because it was a highly polished, fresh take on it. I have no problem with another game of its' ilk - the thing is that many games try to ape the success of a popular title missing the polish and detail that made that title so popular - that why I think many games that don't do that are labeled 'generic'.

If this has the polish and personality to make it stand out then great.

There's three great HD gameplay videos of GOW3 on GameTrailers and man does that look awesome even if it's familiar.

Not everything needs to reinvent the wheel.

Having never played God Of War 1 or 2 and not having a PS2, I'm happy to see a game like this...don't need to come in late on the GOW story arc or catch up with the character, I can just jump into Dante's...I feel the same way about Bayonetta...new IP means I don't have to feel funny playing DMC 4 having never touched the older ones...

Well, good I say. Since we Xbox owners can't play GOW, at least will get a comparable substitute. Coke, Pepsi, whatever, does the same thing, and the taste is close enough.

Cheat codes won't save your soul, but slaughtering demons and tormented sinners will because as Jesus said, 'Do unto others as you would have them do to you...unless they're already in Hell in which case slice them in half or something. Kthxbai.'

Also, I can't imagine a scene with Virgil...

Virgil: Dante, in mortal life these sinners
[Dante cuts them in half]
Virgil: Christ, Dante, I'm trying to teach you a lesson!

"Inferno is no hackneyed clone, it's an impeccable replica."

And this is why as a PS3/360 owner I will be skipping this. If you only have a 360 I could see the value in picking up what looks to be the best GOW rip off ever, but for a muti console or PS3 owner whats the reason to pick this up this fall? There are plenty of great games coming, and with that said is the wait for March going to be that long, especially if Darksiders hits in say January?

Darksiders, Dante's Inferno, Castlevania: Lords Of Shadows, GOW3 !!

Man, next year will be very busy for me, each title is awesome in its own way, for each of them has a distinct feel to it, none of them are too similar, granted that they're all fast-paced action titles, which is a good thing, I actually felt Fallout 3 was a bit slow ( I'm an Action fan !)

So, guess i'll have to get extra controllers. Cause my Kratos-like anger spills on to the poor controller too..
