Impressions: Mass Effect 2 'suicide mission'
Apparently, humans have been reported missing all across the galaxy and, as players, we are working with a "shadowy" pro-human group to get to the bottom of this body-snatching business. This is generally considered a suicide mission (more on that after the break), but nonetheless, we do proceed, recruiting a squad of "the most dangerous, powerful individuals" (oh c'mon, they're aliens) from the known universe to help us.
We caught a tease of one such individual, Thane, described by Hudson as "the most deadly assassin in the galaxy." The mission to encounter Thane showed off some of the new combat enhancements developed for Mass Effect 2, which appear to improve the real-time playability of battle. Hudson described these tweaks, including location damage (i.e., exploding heads, blown-off limbs), as creating "a new precision-shooter feel," but we were still seeing evidence of the clunky experience that marred the original. Animations were stiff and inconsistent, and the AI, both friendly and enemy, continues to manifest itself as robotic (sure, some of these characters are robots, but we were under the impression that they were a bit more intelligent.)
Shepard does appear more capable with a firearm in this sequel, as the demo was played almost entirely in run-and-gun fashion, showing off a seemingly improved cover system and better weapon handling. BioWare is including nine new weapons classes and another new heavy weapons system, featuring a missile launcher, which our demoer used to pelt a wave of enemies. Of course, the pause-and-strategize alternative is still available, too, using a slightly revamped Power Wheel, which can preload "real-time" attacks and help steer squad mates.
Mass Effect 2 is still more RPG than shooter and really shines when the game enters into the dialogue-driven cinematic storytelling choosing. BioWare has added a new twitch element, called "Interrupt," which can be used to force action into conversation when the appropriate blinking icon (the Left Trigger, for example) appears on-screen and is quickly pressed. Frustrated by a stalling interrogation? "I've got nothing more to say to you," offered up an NPC, crossing his arms in dismissal. No problem. Just "interrupt" with a quick shove ... out the window. "How 'bout goodbye," Shepard absurdly one-lined as the man plunged to his death. Wait, there was more: "So, when do we read him his rights?" followed up a squad mate.
Shepard was (played) more apathetic than cold-hearted throughout the demo, coolly watching as Thane crept into the background of a conversation set and offed an important-sounding Asari and her bodyguards. "I was curious to see how far you'd go to find me," Thane gurgled out to Shepard when he was finished. "Well, here I am." We're not entirely sure what was supposed to happen next, as BioWare jumped ahead, skipping past "the entire new level of interactivity" in the planetary scouting mode, too ("We'll explain more about this later in the year," Hudson promised). Let's just assume, then, Thane joined up -- before things went really wrong ...
Yup, this was the point in the demo that Hudson prefaced with: "What we're about to show you is actually a spoiler that is from something that we will never show again outside the game." So, consider yourself warned before you read on for the the long answer to: Is Commander Shepard alive or dead?
Our next glimpse into the game opened in the midst of chaos. Shepard's ship, the Normandy, was hemorrhaging flames and metal. Hudson explained that it had been "severely damaged by a new force in the galaxy." Shepard is played as the good captain, evacuating as many of his crew as possible and presumably sacrificing his own opportunities to hop inside the various escape pods along the path. One too many missed opportunities and Shepard is seen cannon-balled out of the Normandy's exploding side, careening helplessly into space, gasping as the last of his air tanks fizzle out. And then, silence.
This "sets the stage for the very real possibility that Commander Shepard can die in the end of Mass Effect 2," Hudson cryptically posed. "You can actually keep playing after the credits roll; you can go finish adventures; download new stories; and carry your character forward into Mass Effect 3 ... but only if you survive." It's a suicide mission, remember? So save often.

Sure, he's not dead.
From the beginning I was hoping for a "we lost contact with the ship, no response, command's assuming that Shepard's dead." type of plot twist.
Cash @ Jun 3rd 2009 3:31PM
Basically, Shepard is faced with a "who lives and who dies" scenario, just like in the first game. The difference is, if you don't let someone else die, you yourself are toast, which is stupid as that would mean game over. So it's a choice that really isn't a choice, if you want to keep playing the game.
Amada @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:30AM
Nothing like spoilers on the first sentence. I have the feeling I'm not going to be enjoying the remainder of Mass Effect I quite as much. :\
Azerael @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:52AM
It's only been out for *two years* already.
What's taking you so long?
MaRRODkez @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:13AM
It's not really even a spoiler, anyway. Though you're sentiment reminds me of how I've occasionally ripped on people for spoiling parts of Bioshock, which I still haven't played :P
The Baron @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:55AM
So your enjoyment of the game was entirely based on an assumption that Shepherd will die at the end?
I've got news for you buddy. The only reason people thought Shepherd was dead because BioWare released a trailer saying "Commander Shepherd: KIA". It has NOTHING to do with the first game, and common sense says Shepherd's not dead anyway, since they announced you can port him over into ME2 with your ME1 save file.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:31AM
@Markez
Your just asking for some dick to spoil by revealing that. :O
Draimen @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:54PM
I didn't read any spoilers up until the end of the article, where they warn you that there is a spoiler.
And it's hardly a spoiler.
Ezio Auditore de Firenze [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 3rd 2009 3:12PM
markez, vader is, in fact, luke's father.
sorry for spoiling the game.
MaRRODkez @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:52PM
nooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoOooOOoooooOoo
Rop @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:33AM
Darn it, I'm really concerned about this 'clunky' experience as, James so noted. :( At times it rendered the battle experience of the original somewhat unplayable, but still enjoyable to a degree...
I hope they tackle that as one of the priorities to making this one of the best RPG's around. Development is still kinda early, so I'm hopeful it'll be addressed when the title nears its completion.
Dan @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:51AM
This game would shine if they greatly refined combat, the menus, and the overall environment.
I actually very much disliked the previous game.
The original had no cities other than the citadel (and one or two human outposts), which wasn't very large, so there was no exploring new cities, buying upgrades, or doing side missions.
The combat was stale, unresponsive, and just plain boring.
The environments were just plain awful.
Sure you could "explore planets" but every interior was practically the same. Every mine/underground area was copy and pasted for the most part.
I had never been so bored with the environments in my entire life.
Plus having to scroll through all your worthless upgrades just to delete them was so tedious.
I literally dragged myself to finish the first game, so I really hope they improve upon the old mechanics, I know BioWare has it in them.
Mudassir @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:34AM
SHE's not dead. I played as female because Jennifer Hale made her sexy.
Tehman @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:51AM
So if I die in the game as Shepard....
I can't play Mass Effect 3?
Damian @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:24AM
I am guessing if they include that option. shepard is not even playable in mass effect 3, and maybe you meet him as your new character if you save him, but i will be saving my crew.
Nozzinja @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:52AM
"No problem. Just "interrupt" with a quick shove ... out the window"
I LOL'd so hard when i read that...
sounds good, i guess i better finish the first one.
Arnie @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:41AM
I laughed out so loud the guy in my cube turned around and looked at me quizzically.
It sounded so corny and at the same time so awesome. I so wished that this game would come out in the Fall. I guess Dragon Age will have to do for my RPG fix.
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:02AM
Unless that was at the end of the game I doubt that's what happens as the ending, probably more along the lines of Dawn of War Dark Crusade where if you lost your capital city youd watch the cutscene of it being conquered, but you could just load your last save and not die
mnemo @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:03AM
The answer to "alive or dead" is "no"? Well... :-)
jedi58 @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:29AM
I don't get the question.... at the end of Mass Effect you see Sheppard climb out of the rubble?
Jon @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:33AM
That's exactly what I was thinking...I must have missed something, but Shepard did not die in my game.
Draimen @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:54PM
Shepard doesn't die in Mass Effect 1. At all. But there was a teaser trailer for Mass Effect 2 that came out awhile back that said he was KIA. Here's the teaser:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmFbteHdiSw
That's why everyone was wondering if he was dead or not.
Cal @ Jun 3rd 2009 12:41PM
He doesn't die in Mass Effect, but in a teaser trailer for Mass Effect 2 they showed an N7 suit and a computer screen saying that Commander Sheppard was either missing, presumed dead or KIA
Chesley @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:31AM
I see a couple things that worry me--mainly the fact that we were told completely different things by Bioware before concerning Mass Effect 2; we were informed we'd be playing as a new character, so on. It makes it sound like they don't know where to go. On top of that, an ending where you can die is a pretty courageous stunt, but "...by a new force" makes it sound like a new bad guy's going to appear near the end of the game that we only will learn more about in Mass Effect 3, which means this one's likely to feel incomplete.
knor @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:55AM
I'm 99% certain BioWare said from the very beginning that Mass Effect would let you play as the same character over all three games, I remember this because it was one of the original things that drew me to the game in the first place.
and on a side note: am I the only one that actually liked the combat in Mass Effect?
Draimen @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:54PM
They never said you'd play a new character. I remember them specifically saying that your character and saves would transfer to Mass Effect 2.
And I liked the combat of Mass Effect.
Premature ejaculation man @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:46AM
Any spoiler for Mass Effect 2 information is very tempting. Though I am not reading! I am strong! I - I am...
Azerael @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:52AM
Take my hand.
We'll go through this together.
BE STRONG COMRADE.
uncle jesse @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:03AM
Not strong enough to not prematurely ejaculate, BOOM ROASTED!
If you don't want any spoilers than I definitely hope you stay strong and don't read this article. There's some info in there that might make you... uh, prematurely ejaculate?
Darth Bo**ocks @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:00AM
Where's Wrex? Where's Ashley? And Where's that weird alien chick I made love to?
MrXBob @ Jun 3rd 2009 1:01PM
Mass Effect 2 and 3 will use your save games from the original.
Wrex and Ashley (along with Alenko) are all characters that can be lost in the original game. If they died in your game, they wont be in Mass Effect 2. If they lived in your game, they will be in Mass Effect 2.
So it makes no sense for them to show these characters in trailers - some people saved them, some didnt.
Og @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:27AM
This all makes me wonder if I want to play Mass Effect 3....
@Darth Bo**ocks- Wrex better be in this one. I don't care if there is some assassin dude.
b.balance @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:36AM
I don't know reviewers care too much about the combat, KOTORs comba system was horrible yet it's not why people play the game, it's just a break up from all the talking. Sure it's fun to use a biotic lift on an enemy then snipe his head off but i'm sure most people play the game for the conversations and storyline. My personal favourite part is ''Say goodnight Manuel'' then you knock him out, or the crazy salarian trapped in the cell on Virmire. Awesome stuff.
IceKXG @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:37AM
Well, of course Shepard dies...why else is he called a "Spectre"? With those newly found powers, humanity has to find a way to distinguish itself from all the aliens and what better way than to be the first REAL Spectre.
Gimbal @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:22AM
My paragon of virtue Shepard will not be pleased to be working for Cerberus, who I am assuming is the group they are talking about when they say a shadowy pro-human group.
I was curious how they were going to handle people who have done multiple playthroughs and on each playthrough a different cast member may have died.
Technically I was already told the answer but I never found out if it is ok to talk about it or not. Plus, things might change before release. But I didn't think to ask about how your skills will transfer. If you start a new Shepard will he/she be level 1? If you bring in your Shepard from the first ME will he/she have to start at level one or do the skills transfer over?
Well, as long as the inventory system is fixed I, and everyone else, will be much happier.
cmccarthyco @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:25AM
The developers have already said that even though they wont say which characters are for sure back for the sequel, that if you let a character die in Mass Effect 1, then they are dead for good. So if you **spoiler** let Wrex die or Ashley then they are dead and gone assuming that you will use your ME1 save file for ME2... which ... I don't see why you wouldn't. So the thought that Shepard can't die, while not really that common to kill the head of the franchise, isn't outside of the ME universe...
If you havn't played through ME yet, go do it. It's been two years and weather the combat is in your liking or not, this is one of the best story driven games in a very long time. So play the game, then play it again so you can save who you want and complete their side missions so you can have the best ME1 file ready to jump right into ME2.
One gripe i have though ... weren't there supposed to be more DLC for ME1? There is "Bring Down the Sky" but weren't we promised something like 6-12 additional episodes at one point? Well regardless i can't wait for Mass Effect 2. And will be saving every 5 minutes if it is a suicide mission...
Draimen @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:54PM
I don't remember anywhere that you can let Wrex die.
d3athcr4ft @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:15PM
Its not so much that you can "let" Wrex die, as it is that you can, um, "cause" him to die. lol
Jon @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:31AM
I must be missing something...I played Mass Effect all the way through, and Shepard definitely did not die in my game.
Why is everyone always asking if Shepard is dead? What did I miss? Maybe it was a DLC pack I didn't buy?
b.balance @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:47AM
It's true, Shepard doesn't die in Mass Effect 1. What people are refering to is the first Mass Effect 2 teaser trailer where it shows Shepards status as KIA. Then the other trailers that are out now, where they refer to a 'suicide' mission. It's pretty much confirmed that you'll start as off as Shepard in ME2 but halfway through the game you can die. My assumptions based on the new trailer (trailer spoilers here) is that the Normandy gets blown up in space but his crew exits via escape pods, and shepard stays behind so everyone presumes he's dead.
Jon @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:15AM
@b.balance
Thanks a lot for the information, I appreciate it!
Can't wait for ME2!!
Storm Eagle @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:48AM
I personally don't care who I'm playing as. So long as I can facepalm fools out a window when they give me lip, I'm satisfied.
uncle jesse @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:05AM
I can't wait to dance with Thane at the bar.
Lustis @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:41AM
I didn't read the spoiler area. I think it was the first time I ever didn't read something that said that. Mostly because I really loved the first game. I think I'll go play some soon.
Hector @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:52AM
I don't think it's wise for Bioware to punish so hardly all the players who play as an extremely good Shepard...
I mean, I'm really good, I save everyone else in the normandy and then the game ends for me? And everyone else is free to continue playing and downloading DLC? C'mon!
Heh @ Jun 3rd 2009 12:08PM
Nice guys finish last, man.
MrXBob @ Jun 3rd 2009 1:40PM
Everybody keeps jumping to conclusions and getting their panties in a bunch. Seriously, CHILL.
Nobody said 'if you save everyone, you die. game over, you wont ever play the sequel' - so stop thinking that. There is a 'possibility' that you can die - look up that word. And if you die - there is absolutely nothing in the world stopping you from reloading your last save and trying again.
They didnt say there is no way to rescue the crew AND survive youself.
Nihilism98 @ Jun 3rd 2009 3:42PM
Want.
Also, Wrex better still be around.
hkdarkgen @ Jun 20th 2009 1:23AM
Ok... So, I have read what people have said and I have got a real good perspective on what may or is going to happen in ME2. I am a pro Mass Effect player... that is privileged too live in the city that makes this awesome game. My question is... I have finished mass effect many times... and I am actually working on finishing it on Hard Core setting... (Kind of easy) I have to say. What does that say for me and my different endings of ME 1? I have been good and ruthless, (spoiler) I have done the death scenarios for Ashley, Wrex, and Kaidan. (Spoiler) I have save the counsel, let the counsel die. (Spoiler) let the rachini live and die. I have done it all. How will all that I have done in ME 1, effect what will happen in ME 2? I mean, do they base how ME2 starts from your last save file in ME 1.
