Interview: Final Fantasy XIII's Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama

We were given the opportunity to sit down for a brief roundtable group discussion with Final Fantasy XIII's director, Motomu Toriyama, and producer, Yoshinori Kitase, shortly before getting eyes on with the newly announced summon Gestault mode. Check after the break for the full interview and, if you haven't already, make sure you read through our impressions of the summon system.
We know the game is coming out at the end of the year in Japan and next Spring in the US, but what about Europe?
We're targeting to release Final Fantasy XIII in Europe in 2010.
Can you share any details regarding the story?
The world is split into two areas -- a futuristic city called Cacoon and an outside wilderness called Pulse. The game's main characters, such as Lightning and Snow, have been influenced by Pulse and as a result the Holy Government of Cocoon is attempting to exile them. They have to stand up to their destinies. It's hard to explain the story without giving too much away.
What makes Final Fantasy XIII different from previous Final Fantasies?
Final Fantasy XIII is the most evolved version of the series, so far. It's set the furthest in the future and features a new evolved combat system.
Which of the previous Final Fantasies is XIII most similar to?
In terms of the world and the futuristic setting, it's most similar to Final Fantasy VII but in terms of the group-based simultaneous combat system, it's more similar to XII. We try to take the best of every Final Fantasy for each new game, so all the other games have had their influence.
Can you explain what we'll be showing to us today?
We'll be showing you the Shiva summon and the newly announced summon Gestault mode.
Can you go into detail on summons?
You saw Odin being summoned by Lightning in the latest trailers, so you've seen one of our summon animations. One summon partners with each character in the game. These summons have individual Gestault modes, which changes the style of the combat system.
How was the game's story developed?
I (Toriyama) tend to start with the overall story of the game first, then I'll create characters to fit within that framework. Then I'll develop both of these together simultaneously.
Will there be the option for Japanese voices when the game is released in the west?
I (Kitase) would be interested to hear what you think. Is there a demand for it?
I think definitely, yes.
It would depend on how many discs the game takes up. Voice data tends to be massive and we want to keep the number of discs to a minimum.
Does that mean there's the possibility of having multiple discs for the PS3 version?
We're planning only one disc for the PS3 version, as it's a Blu-ray.
How many discs are you expecting the Xbox 360 version to have?
Not a ridiculously massive amount. We want to keep it to a minimum as the more discs a game has, the more expensive it is to produce.
You're showing us Shiva's motorbike Gestault mode, but what about the other summon we've seen so far, Odin?
Our big reveal for this show is Odin's summon animation. We can't go into detail regarding his Gestault at the moment. Fans of the series should have an idea of what to expect from Odin's transformation. Keeping imagining for a little while and we'll have more footage for you as soon as possible.

lol multiple disks on the 360 FAIL
Snowblind @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:54PM
Just like FFVII, VIII and IX had multiple discs?
It takes only a few seconds to switch them, and I can assure you no 360 fan is upset by the fact they'll have to use multiple discs to play the game.
eNrique @ Jun 4th 2009 12:25AM
Yeah snowblind, but technology EVOLVES.
Multiple discs is sooooooooooooo 1997.
You have to MOVE FORWARD, ever heard of Blu Ray?, it holds up to 50 Gb of space, against some other obsolete tech that only holds like, 7.3 Gb.
Blind indeed.
And I will be soooo pissed of if the developers choose to cut off japanese language from the PlayStation 3 version just because the xbox can't hold the maasive amount of audio required.
Playing it in english will be like watching a 007 movie in japanese.
:s

Fail? Like all the other Final Fantasys that were multiple disc.. yay I'm looking at your precious Final Fantasy 7.
Let's not forget that the 360 can do a FULL install... which means you'll never have to swap discs and that the drive will only read disc 1 once for 5 seconds to confirm you have (own) the game.. something even your precious PS3 can't do.
eNrique @ Jun 4th 2009 1:44AM
"Let's not forget that the 360 can do a FULL install... which means you'll never have to swap discs and that the drive will only read disc 1 once for 5 seconds to confirm you have (own) the game.. something even your precious PS3 can't do."
Ohhhhhhhh...
You know, you don't have to do that on the PlayStation 3, because, everything comes in just ONE Blu Ray, and it does't sound like a chainsaw.
Also, let's see how the 20Gb and arcade owners do with the full install...
*chuckles*
And Final Fantasy 7 and its multiple discs are soooooooooooo 1997, technology evolves, something even your precious fanboyism seems to forget.
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 4th 2009 1:45AM
"which means you'll never have to swap discs and that the drive will only read disc 1 once for 5 seconds to confirm you have (own) the game.."
When was this confirmed? I'm sure this is not possible. I know 360 can do full install but even with full install many games still aren't optimized to run off the HDD so there is minimal differences. Last time I checked you need the disc to run the game, so I would believe one would need disc 2 to play content from it.
"something even your precious PS3 can't do."
While the PS3 cant do full installs it's because this isnt necessary. PS3 games are optimized to do automatic installs some large and some not. These partial installs help reduce load times and keep enough of the game on the PS3 to make it run as smooth as possible. While games like KILLZONE 2 and Resistance 2 don't have massive installs or any at all these still run great without them and have quick load times.
"Fail? Like all the other Final Fantasys that were multiple disc.. yay I'm looking at your precious Final Fantasy 7."
I'm sorry but this is a fail because the game is gimped already and this isn't the days of the PlayStation 1 where games needed a multiple disc because of size limitations.
Snowblind @ Jun 4th 2009 5:03AM
Actually with games like Lost Odyssey, you can use any disc if it's installed to the HDD, not swapping necessary.
Access Granted @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:48PM
Sweet can't wait to get this on 360! they can just release the japanese audio as dlc. I bet it will only be like 4 discs ala, Lost Odyssey. I hope this is as good as FF7 was if not better. My wallet will be crying because of all the awesomeness this holiday season!
PranaFerox @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:56PM
1) ONLY 4 discs?
2) This game is not coming out until next spring at the earliest, so that's not exactly holiday season. Unless you extend your holiday season to Easter, or something.
Mark @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:51PM
"How many discs are you expecting the Xbox 360 version to have?
Not a ridiculously massive amount. We want to keep it to a minimum as the more discs a game has, the more expensive it is to produce."
So heavilly compressed and heavilly gimped it is then, as I don't think anyone has made any radical advances in compression technology in the last 5 years...
Oh dear, kick in the teeth for X360 owners....
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:55PM
what did you expect? the game was long into development on the PS3 I'm guessing before the decision to make it multiplatform. The demo alone was more than 5 GB.
Snowblind @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:06PM
You may want to look up on data compression then.
They actually had a gameplay demonstration of the 360 version at E3 and it looked *identical* to what we've seen of the PS3 version. You're welcome to take a fanboy approach and comb through it for the tiniest differences, but seriously. It's the same damn game, enjoy it and don't worry over what system someone else is playing it on.
P.S.
the game was developed for the PC, so it could easily be ported to any other system. It's quite clear they've always had the intention of making it multiplatform.
deanb @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:09PM
@Snowblind - Developed ON the PC not for the PC. All games are. Just depends what SDK they use to code it originally. In this case the PS3 SDK then ported to 360.
Snowblind @ Jun 4th 2009 5:05AM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Engine
"The Crystal Tools engine, originally named the White Engine, is a game engine built by Square Enix to be used on all seventh generation game consoles; the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and with Microsoft Windows PCs."
MRLN @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:50PM
Multiple Blu-ray disks would be something else entirely.
As in, freaking epicly long and worth $100 that it would cost.
skyzbig @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:59PM
Oh God, can't we all just enjoy the game for Christ sake?
Well, when it gets here that is...
Matthew Moore @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:21PM
I agree with Skyzbig, Final Fantasy is a great series and I am glad the game itself is underway, regardless of what system I buy it on.
As to what Snowblind says about the game being developed for PC, I highly doubt that. When was the last time square had any serious focus on PC for a mainstream final fantasy title.
Neophoton @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:19PM
Agreed.
Let people play it on whatever system they want to play it on. Not like it's gonna kill anyone.
I'll be enjoying this on my PS3 next spring. Shame it won't be coming any earlier.
Liam @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:29PM
Sony has been Sqenix's platform of choice for well over a decade; just sayin...
It's awesome that it's only going to be one disc on the PS3 though. The only i didn't love about VIII was the whole 4 disc thing. I lost disc 3 after I got to 4 so I could never go back and replay it all the way through; it really sucked
Chad @ Jun 4th 2009 5:23PM
Ehh... FFVII was three discs... why does everyone keep saying four?
Liam @ Jun 4th 2009 7:03PM
VIII (8) was 4 discs
Sora @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:42PM
"Will there be the option for Japanese voices when the game is released in the west?
I (Kitase) would be interested to hear what you think. Is there a demand for it?
I think definitely, yes."
If this makes it into the game, we owe you guys one.
Saria the Cat @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:43PM
I don't give a crap about having multiple discs. I'd much rather have multiple discs than heavily compressed files. As for it being "more expensive," that's B.S. --- discs are dirt cheap these days. It'll be more expensive, but only marginally. Oh, and Japanese audio DLC plskthx.
technole @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:06PM
The media cost is not the primary issue.
Microsoft requires almost 2GB of copy protection data on each 360 disc. Look it up. This is why developers like John Carmack at id have complained that size is an issue because there are increased costs when you don't even have a full DVD to work with.
This impacts coding a great deal. Not only do you have to go back and recode disc transitions, that's only step one. What if someone wants to go back to an area on the first disc? Ask the user to switch or does that data going or have to be duplicated on each disc. So you have even less to work with.
Draco @ Jun 3rd 2009 11:11PM
I believe Microsoft (presumably Sony and Nintendo too) charge more for every disk in a game. it's lame, but thats what's been reported.
eNrique @ Jun 4th 2009 12:30AM
microsoft charges royalties per game disc, so YES, it's more expensive if they launch it on multiple discs.
So yeah, enjoy your 12 discs collector edition.
*chuckles*
B-real206 @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:17PM
I'm curious if there is going to be an install and how long will that take.
When is this coming out in japan?
Kenaf @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:25PM
Why haven't I heard of anyone asking if we'll get a playable demo in the US? Sure I know its not in Advent Children Complete, but what about downloadable?
Ex14 @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:41PM
Would this be comign to Asia T-T i really want it here!~
Hithere @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:45PM
Stop spelling it "Gestault." It's gestalt.
Vincent @ Jun 4th 2009 11:48AM
Oh good, for a second I thought I was the one spelling it wrong all these years. Yeah wtf is with the "U"?
steven(PSN: small_hands) @ Jun 4th 2009 7:35AM
Cant freaking wait!!!
And to everyone arguing about space, it is an issue for developers but if you have no problem swapping disc then fine, my console of choise is the PS3 and will be looking forward to devoting some serious playtime to this!! You should just be happy that you get a choice of what console you get to play this on... cleary though... the PS3 version will be superior this time around... :-P haha couldnt help it sorry!
Sandi @ Jun 4th 2009 10:55AM
Would LOVE to have Japanese voices retained in all versions of the game. Who can we contact to tell them so??
If the voices cause a problem with space on the Xbox 360, can't they put the voices as a downloadable extra on Xbox Live? It might take forever to download if it really is that much space, but it would be so worth it. I REALLY would like to have the Japanese voices. Multiple discs isn't a huge deal imo either.
TristanElf @ Jun 4th 2009 11:30AM
I would love to see them keep the Japanese dialog as an option. I'll probably be playing the PS3 version, and I hope that a blu-ray has enough space to contain it. If not, I would be willing to use some hard drive space to download them, too. Like Sandi above suggested.
Chad @ Jun 4th 2009 5:25PM
Oops, didn't have my reading glasses on. lol You say VIII... so that's correct. :D
vannyx @ Jun 5th 2009 1:14PM
My number one concern since the Cue still stands and hasnt been asked or addressed by anyone. What compromises where made to make this game multiplat. Why not do the world wide release that was original promised and then release the 360 version when its ready. Why are ps3 users in the US being punished and shat on. I dont remember anyone compromising bioshock , or delaying it so it could be released at the same time for the 360 and the ps3.
