Joystiq Podcast E309 - Carl's Jr. edition

We've been downgraded from the mysterious oil tanker to a Carl's Jr. in a sketchy L.A. neighborhood. Yeah, we've seen brighter days. Still, that didn't keep us from giving you our thoughts on all the big three press conferences.
Oh, and about the paper rustling at the beginning: Just hang in there, it ends fairly quickly. Sorry, we were starving, we had no choice.

You guys seriously need to be introduced to either personally cooked food, or simply better food...
The last time I had fast food had to be nearly 4 - 5 years ago...
And don't use the "we can't afford, and or get good food" because that's a full-on lie.
sicsided @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:17PM
WITCH!!!!!
Velsar @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:17PM
Mmm angel-hair pasta with a lavish butter-sauce, complete with butter flake croissants, salted cucumber slices, and sparkling cider... mmm.
I'd share, but you wouldn't accept, you prefer your Carl. Jr's.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:19PM
Velsar, I'm sorry we can't all live up to your expectations.
Shagittarius @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:19PM
Antacids over here!
Velsar @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:26PM
*Holds out a free plate of angel-hair pasta with included amenities.*
I see.
Thank you guys for agreeing with me, I'm so glad people understand logic, have kept some of their intelligence, and aren't completely idiotic.
Mmm strawberry swirl cheesecake, with white wine.
el serpiente @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:36PM
Velsar, no one gives a shit about the food Rachel Ray taught you to cook this afternoon.
This website is not a platform for you to spew uninteresting things that interest you about yourself.
Velsar @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:39PM
Who's Rachel Ray?
Oh and um... El, you should know from your previous encounter with me, that nothing you say matters to me, will be treated as if it's from a mentally disabled idiot, and is just worthless to type.
Good food recommendations and encouragement is important, btw.
Wow, I've had all the components of a traditional fine-dine meal, all that's missing is the traditional Cigar after, lol.
Mmm I need a snack.. cococut clusters with swiss chocolate... milk with a cream surface, mmm sounds good.
justin.mcelroy @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:45PM
That would of course be ideal. But in the case it was a situation of necessity. You've got a crew of 18 dudes and it's 9 o'clock at night and no one knows the city, it's quite a bit trickier.
Next year though, we're hiring you as our personal chef, promise.
el serpiente @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:52PM
And here you go, continuing on and on with the uninteresting stuff again...
Velsar @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:58PM
Ahh that's why you need one of those tom-tom's for your rented car, that way you can just type in restaurant and OFF YOU GO...
Quattro @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:16PM
You can eat your shit Velsar, and I'll enjoy some Burger King.
The Baron @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:32PM
They're at E3.. you wanna send them a kitchen suite for their hotel rooms, go ahead.
Velsar @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:56PM
You seriously underestimate the capabilities one has by just visiting a grocery store...
Being at E3 doesn't excuse them from eating healthily.
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:32PM
if you want them to take that time off getting teh news just so they can eat fancy well fuck you! Also, saying you're going to treat a guy's responses as if they're from a mentally retarded person is not gonna win you friends. Guessing your response will be you arent trying to get friends, you obviously are, or at least trying to get people to agree with your opinions, or else you wouldnt post at all.
Velsar @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:44PM
Friends are nice, but El has made several replies to my posts, and they've all been idiotic and immature and as such I only place her/him and several others in such categories.
And actually, I could just simply want to state my opinion somewhere...
It doesn't take time out of the day to eat well, it's called multitasking, something all journalists better know if they want to stay in the industry.
Random G @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:46PM
Batman just spanked yo ass!
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:59PM
thankfully their multitasking resources are spent on both getting the news, delivering it, and adding delightful quips to it.
Josh @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:17PM
Is that really Justin or not?
Random G @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:44PM
to Josh
No, I think the Justin McElroy that replied to Royal's comment is the real one. Unless Justin has succeeded in cloning himself.
Saria the Cat @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:58PM
Do you realize where they're at right now? You can't cook yourself food if you're staying in a hotel room with no kitchen. I know that normally the guys do make themselves food --- Chris Grant even had a mini-rant last podcast about "gamer grub" and how it makes him want to cook himself a nice fancy meal.
I'm all about home cooked food but if you're on vacation or somewhere not home, it's near impossible to cook yourself something.
...And what the frak, you talk about eating healthy and then finishing it with a CIGAR? Sorry Velsar, I like you, but this shit's bananas.
Saria the Cat @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:08PM
...And about 75% of the food you're suggesting is not healthy at all. Cheesecake is one of the worst foods for your body! I think by eating "healthily" you mean "expensive and fancy." A slice of cheesecake is equivalent to a regular Carl's Jr. burger in terms of nutrition, except the Carl's Jr. is cheaper and it has protein.
I'm not saying I like fast food --- I hardly eat it since it is more expensive to eat out than in, and we don't even have chains in Berkeley. I'm just pointing out that the food you're suggesting is just as fatty and ill-nourishing as a Carl's Jr. meal.
chispito @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:51PM
Right, everybody has a home cooked meal when they're traveling for work.
Velsar @ Jun 6th 2009 8:06PM
I actually didnt' state to finish it with a "cigar", I simply stated that my meal sounded similar to the old adage of fine dining and cigars, I read some old stuff...
But just so you know, since cigars aren't actually inhaled, and as long as you don't over-indulge (once a month or maybe twice a month is fine) and you are responsible with it, it isn't actually UNHEALTHY, unless of course you have predispositions regarding health that make your throat or mouth more susceptible to infection. It is a toxin, I will agree, as it can cause cancers in the throat and mouth and gum if you over-indulge or are just really unlucky, but stress in itself is one of the most powerful and known killers, and the ability to relieve said stress in a permeable and not simply "blocked" manner, is a good thing... alcohol and drugs don't work the same way, nor do cigarettes and their 3000 carcinogens and chemicals... it's a risk and I haven't done it, but I've looked into such things for research purposes, and it's not a farstretch to say I might try it sometime when the occasion merits it.
As for cheesecake, PURE CHEESE, that is not modified in any manner aside from germ removal, is actually HEALTHY... it's the things the companies and what not ADD TO IT that makes it so unhealthy... and so a PURE CHEESE cheesecake would actually be very healthy as long as you ate just a slice. Butter is dangerous unless you use non fatbased solubles in it and of course it's home-made (to stop a lot of the fat and chemicals from entering it) and noodles need to be cooked just right and properly split so as to prevent any chemicals or nutrient loss.
It's easy to make food in a hotel, as they do actually have a kitchen, usually in your room... so that's not an excuse, and secondly, you could pack quick-heat frozen meals that you made before it, and as long as they are properly contained they will be as good as they used to... so no excuses in that.
Fast foods contain grease... and I'm really not a fan of hamburgers... can't stand most American foods.
Mr French @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:17PM
ahhh. good to hear your beautiful voices.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:18PM
Brought to you by Carl's Jr.
charlie b. @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:20PM
"Carl's Jr. in a sketchy L.A. neighborhood."
as a life-long L.A. resident, welcome gentlemen.
seriously, the convention center is nice and all, but the area around it is not so much. carry pepper spray.
Royal @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:22PM
Holy Christ this is a bad podcast. Please just stick to blogging.
Justin McElroy @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:46PM
Dad?
Random G @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:06PM
Royal, if you don't like the podcast, then you don't have to listen to it.
They're taking time out of their busy schedules to make a podcast for the community. The least you could do is appreciate that.
Last year, the fancast crew was harshly criticized for the poor quality of their episodes, rather than thanked for their hard work. That had better not happen again.
Royal @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:44PM
Random G,
I am a big fan of Joystiq and think they're by far the best videogame blog on the net. So I figured I'd check out their podcast. It's just not near the quality of the blog. I couldn't even finish it because it was so bad. I can understand why they were "...harshly criticized for the poor quality of their episodes". If this is indicative of their other podcasts, then I'll know next time to skip it.
Random G @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:59PM
I meant that their shows from E3 2008 were considered by some to be of poor quality. You should give them another shot once everything returns to normal.
Saria the Cat @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:01PM
@Royal: E3 podcasts are not indicative whatsoever of the normal weekly podcast. Equipment and sleep are extremely limited. Listen in after E3 or even to a pre-E3 episode. The trio is ridiculously funny and delightful to listen to --- you can't find the same personality in other gaming podcasts.
ThatPCgameryouhate @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:01PM
Hey Royal if you're going to bash on the Podcast do it on iTunes. Just rate it, 5 stars is the worst, so stick with that, and write something like:
I can't believe how awesome this podcast is. I think God blessed this podcast, and all it's hosts just for me.
Zertoss @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:22PM
Shadow Complex sounds like a fan-made Sonic the Hedgehog game to me. One that has a lot of crying and wrist-cutting. And that DAMN 4th Chaos Emerald.
NaeemTHM @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:52PM
Sweet! I've been dying to hear about your thoughts on E3. I hope there's plenty of Splinter Cell Conviction talk.
I am a machineee @ Jun 3rd 2009 5:53PM
Uhm, I guess most of you aren't from California. Carls Jr. definitely is higher up on the food chain of... erm, fast-food chains.
From the 99 cent Spicy Chicken to the AMAZING Western Bacon Cheeseburger. Come find me, Joystiq staff, I'll buy one for each of you, they are that delicious.
Trev_tron @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:00PM
Scratch one lunch!

Scratch one lunch!
Trev_tron @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:05PM
Dammit, sorry everyone.
The Dark Wayne @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:32PM
NOICE!
Dr. @ Jun 3rd 2009 7:36PM
God dammit, I just spit pepsi all over my monitor.
Random G @ Jun 3rd 2009 6:20PM
SCRATCH TWO LUNCHES! Pass the ketchup Dom.
Josh @ Jun 3rd 2009 8:54PM
Golden Sun DS was the highlight of Nintendo's conference, and probably my favorite news from E3. It's too bad you all missed it.
Saria the Cat @ Jun 3rd 2009 9:11PM
If it's amazing fast food you want, you guys need to get Inn-n-Out! There aren't any of those where you're from, right?
ThatPCgameryouhate @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:02PM
There's not an In-And-Out 1,000 miles from anywhere, where I'm from, so I always feel sorely left out when people talk about it.
QAguy @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:02PM
I like Joystiq...probably my favorite gaming website...so I decided to check out the E3 podcast because I wanted to hear gamers thoughts....WOW....this was pretty bad. I'm not trying to bitch, just offer constructive advice. Sounded REALLY lazy, tired, and like you guys were actually bored. IGN's podcast are horrible as well...what the hell is going on...if the gaming industry wants to be taken "seriously" they need to take their work more seriously.
You guys really couldn't wait until after you ate to do this...really? I understand this is probably a shoe string budget operation...but c'mon fellas...dont let them see you sweat....
I'll check you guys out maybe in a couple of months and see who things are but for now I'll be listening to 1Up's podcast...its the only "professional" gaming podcast I've heard so far...go ahead vote me down now...
Asg @ Jun 3rd 2009 10:16PM
Chris Grant, broken time machine metaphor was great.
Tomek @ Jun 7th 2009 2:16AM
Loved the show guys.
I listen to the joycast because it's about games and more importantly, it's funny. What I enjoy is the guys hanging out and shooting the shit about video games, and this show delivered that in a new setting that provided some character.
