Since this is an Epic game, it's going to have a rocket launcher identical to UT3's right? Because it seems epic always needs a copy/pasted RL from ut3 in all their games.

They had me at Castlevania when they mentioned this game, however when they said "like Metroid" it shot to the top of my most wanted XBLA list. This game will satisfy me until I get my hands on Metroid M.

Also, I don't get why the term "Metroidvania" is used to describe this game. I mean shouldn't that only apply to the Castlevania games? If another game is borrowing ideas from Metroid it should have the Metroid suffix.

In this case: Shadow Metroid...plex.

The term is used to describe Metroid's exploration based, linear-disguised-as-non-linear gameplay. I don't like it though, because Metroid did it for years before the first Metroid style Castlevania (SotN) came out. So I agree with you, only, the dumb term has been coined by the community, giving the illusion that Castlevania had just as much of a hand in establishing that gameplay as Metroid, which is false.

I think the unlockable is actually video of Cliffy B's head a-sploding. Now THAT would be EPIC.

Thanks, yeah my love for games hasn't died a bit, but my love for some of the knuckleheads on this blog has. Guess I got tired of the flamewars a bit.

I love how every article about Shadow Complex mentions "part this/part that." I think we've got it now.

As time goes on, my desire for a 360 goes up. Most games I want are multiplatform, and when I bought my PS3, the exclusives on that system intruiged me more, but the 360 has some non-Halo stuff that I want, and this is totally one of em.

Though, Lost Planet 2 confirmed multi brought my desire back down a notch too. I'm starting to wonder if less popular multiplayer games would be more fun on XBL too. PSN is fine for more popular titles, but there just aren't enough people playing Lost Planet or Bionic Commando online. I'd like to see stats.

Ha it's interesting to see someone on the opposite side of the fence. I've been looking to purchase a PS3 for YEARS now but haven't seen enough games to warrant purchase. I mean I know games like Little Big Planet are show stoppers and quite amazing, but I'm not really into user created content.

So far only Uncharted, MGS4, and Infamous are on my list of most wanted games for the PS3.

Though other than Splinter Cell Conviction and this game, there really aren't that many 360 exclusives to look forward to this year in my opinion. So I can see why you're still only thinking about getting a 360.

Naeem, if you're a superhero fan (especially someone like Spider-Man) inFAMOUS should be enough to warrant a purchase of a PS3.

It's only the 2nd game I've gotten that has made me not turn on my 360 in over a week (well, except to test out a Rock Band guitar before selling it.)

I haven't really enjoyed gaming all that much since the PS1/N64 days, and even those were not great compared to SNES/NES days. But I have to say I am pleasantly surprised with the 360 (I suspect I would feel the same way about the Wii and PS3, but I don't have those systems). In any case, it's a great time to be a gamer with 3 competitive companies each trying to outdo the other.

As a huge Metroid fan, THIS is the Metroid game that I'm looking forward to. I'm really excited to play this. Again, I'm a huge, huge Metroid fan, but "Other M" just has me confused and ambivalent. I mean, what kind of game IS that, anyway? 2D action, 3D platformer, first-person shooter, linear mission-based story-driven what?

Show me a 2D game with a huge, grid-based map, tell me I can explore at my own pace, find upgrades that let me kill dudes better and simultaneously allow me to reach new areas, tell me there are loads of secret items to discover, tell me I can attempt a speed run; EVERYTHING I have heard and seen of this game is perfect. Shadow Complex is THE Metroid I've been clamoring for. Nintendo's been sitting on 2D Metroid for far too long; I'm really glad someone took matters into their own hands and will deliver that kind of experience again. This time with great, polygonal graphics and achievement points! Needless to say, I'm super excited to play it.

I'm skeptical of Other M too. I'd personally take a 2D Metroid over any of the Primes any day. And Other M seems to take the game even further away from its roots.

Konami showed how great a 2D game can be with SotN. I don't understand why Nintendo/Konami won't let those series breath with a console release. Instead, they keep putting the good games on the handhelds and churn out mediocre 3D games (moreso in the case of Castlevania) for the consoles.

Castlevania is Metroid with swords, actually. Symphony of the Night was the first title to ape Metroid's style, and that came years after Super Metroid.

Me too. I know in their early history they had other types of games, but recently it has been all Unreal and Gears. I enjoy those games, but it's cool to see them try something different. I love Metroidvania games so I welcome anyone taking a shot and making a game in that style.

It's a shame there demo at E3 didn't go so well. Mic not working and the rather game killing bug at the end. Looks excellent though.

In case you missed the E3 Live demo, While the host was playing he killed the spider robot you see above. The problem is he trapped him in a corner and when he killed it it disappeared but the physical object didn't. The now invisible object blocked his path to the next door. He jumped on it 3 or 4 times before he paused it.

I saw the glitch too. However this is not even beta, so I'm not worrying yet. Especially with Epic having a good track record of continuing to fix bugs even months after release.

With speed runs that can be done in under 2 hours... The first run through of the game will probably take 10+ hours but after the first playthrough the speed runs will make the game feel short.

I don't consider the "bad" ending of SotN as beating the game, since its really only half the game.

10+ hour XBLA game. Sounds cool if it's fun, but I'm wondering the cost.

Sounds like they will most likely have my points.

Don't get me wrong with the following questions, I'm not trying to be a hater, because this game does LOOK like it has some potential (backed by a solid developer!), but:

What exactly is it about this game that has anything "Metroid"-esque aside from the obvious action/sidescroller elements?

In my opinion, Metroid is Metroid because it is a game of exploration. Earn one item to gain access to another area. Will this game feature a similar system? If so, then the comparisons are valid, but I just haven't seen those elements yet.

---

On a side note, any predictions on price point? I fear it'll be 1200-1600 points, which is a tad too much for games on a service like XBLA (I haven't purchased Braid, Penny Arcade or any other 1200+ titles for this reason, regardless of the "quality".)
