Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, minus the 'Castlevania'

Lords of Shadow's Gabriel, circa 2008
Lords of Shadow was a gothic action-adventure game starring a character named Gabriel, who just so happened to wield a whip -- iconic weapon of Castlevania heroes -- that emerged from a crucifix. Castlevania: Lord of Shadows is -- in keeping with the series -- a gothic adventure, starring a crucifix/whip-wielding character named Gabriel (who, like the rest of the game, looks exactly as he did last year). Both years' trailers even feature the same giant, stone golem boss character. Oh, and look amazing. Only now, Kojima Productions is steering MercurySteam along the development path.
2009, where everything old is new again -- and carrying the Castlevania name. Check out the game as it appeared a year ago in trailer form after the break (and in original concept art below).

Kojima Productions has a hand in Castlevania?
Yes, please.
erwr @ Jun 4th 2009 6:46AM
FUck you this is not castlevania!!!
sorry damn this ruined my e3 i was expecting a castlevania game..hell thats one of the reasons i bought a 360!!! this is bullshit.... the game looks like x-blades btw no suprise if it ends up like it.
fucking wasting the castlevania game./
R.I.P casltevania and fuck you kojima studiios.
Jampirow @ Jun 4th 2009 6:52AM
@erwr
Angry aren't we? There are two Castlevania games in production, they will probably change the story (and the songs - hmm, Castlevania songs...) to match with the serie's timeline.
And the other Castlevania stars Alucard, so you can still have wet fanboy dreams.

@erwr
Get a PS3/PSP we have 2D Castlevania games ;)
dgknight500 @ Jun 4th 2009 8:23AM
@Jam: 2 Castlevanias? I've only heard of Lords of Shadow... whats the other one (please don't say ds/wii)?
Jimbotron @ Jun 4th 2009 9:35AM
Meh. This just looks like a gothic God of War.
Jampirow @ Jun 4th 2009 11:22AM
@dgiknight500
Igarashi showed a teaser for a next gen Castlevania last year on the TGS. This game existed from the start and then adopted the Castlevania name, both games exist.

I'm sorry, but I am with erwr on this one (maybe not as mad, though). Even with Kojima at the helms (errr, what is his involvement with this game again?), I am not at all excited since this was not a ground up Castlevania game.
I mean... it doesn't matter I guess. A good game is a good game. But it just rubs me the wrong way that a game was already in development for over a year and they just slap on the Castlevania name and now it instantly Castlevania. I don't know if it is subconscious or not, but in the back of my head, all I see is that other game.
I will have to wait to see how it turns out. As for now, I am not excited as I thought I would be :/
Oobgarm @ Jun 4th 2009 7:25AM
BAWWWWWWW
If you haven't realized that the 3D Castlevania's don't cater to fanboys, then I feel bad for you.
Vidikron @ Jun 4th 2009 10:27AM
No need to feel sorry for them. The 3D Castlevanias have always fallen far short of the 2D games, so they're not missing out. Maybe this one will change that, but I'm taking a wait and see approach. But the fact that the Castlevania name has apparently been tacked on isn't encouraging.
EGOvoruhk @ Jun 4th 2009 7:33AM
When that whip starts moving, it looks a lot like God of War
Victor @ Jun 4th 2009 7:45AM
the gallery is named Order of Shadow :P
MaxShrek @ Jun 4th 2009 7:59AM
as much as I'd like a new 2D Castlevania, this does look fekkin sweet.
dgknight500 @ Jun 4th 2009 8:19AM
Oooooh. I remember this game now....
ToTheMoon @ Jun 4th 2009 10:34PM
yeah, it's called God of War... imitation is the best form of flattery.
Buttscratch @ Jun 4th 2009 8:28AM
first, igarashi has said many times he can't do 3D well.
second, kojima said this isn't tied in with any other games, making me believe it is not a true castlevania game. if it fails, it doesn't hurt castlevania. I mean, look at judgement for the wii. I played it, Yeah, I cried, so what?
third, i'm sure igarashi was totally ok with this idea.
so I'm not worried.
holyice7 @ Jun 4th 2009 8:48AM
To be frank, not a whole lot of the fanbase gives a large damn what IGA thinks. I, for one, would be quite pleased if he'd quit riding SotN's coattails ragged and try getting back to basics.
I'd be more than happy to see Kojima take over Castlevania. He has experience doing the whole vampire thing, albeit in a decidedly less Gothic atmosphere. Remember Boktai?
Castlevania could do with a slight Westernization. Vampire lore is steeped in Eastern mythology, not FAR Eastern. Kojima would really do this series a lot of good.
And, if you really look at it critically, the Ninja Gaiden/God of War brawler gameplay style would have been the next logical step for Castlevania. It just never really got to that point because of the limitations of the design staff.
Danzaiver @ Jun 4th 2009 8:39AM
So the MASK was actually Castlevania, sweet!
A must buy for me! Damn... so many games... >=3
T @ Jun 4th 2009 9:54AM
Wow...I've been fooled. I remember this game last year and thinking "Wow GoW clone..."
Now they add Castlevania and I'm foaming at the mouth for it. (Having completely forgotten the game last year)
I'm suddenly less interested knowing the Castlevania name (and potential reboot) comes from it not even being a Castlevania game at first....
chris @ Jun 4th 2009 10:40AM
Tactical espionage whip action? Count me in.
Trev @ Jun 4th 2009 10:48AM
So is it "Lords of Shadow" or "Lord of Shadows"? "Lords of Shadows"?
Martin @ Jun 4th 2009 10:53AM
I'll pass on a gothic God of War clone. Castlevania, to me, has always been about exploration. I didn't get the impression from that trailer that exploration is a big focal point here.
Rorschach @ Jun 4th 2009 12:05PM
CastleVania has been arguably my favorite game series, however I'm not sure if I'm going to consider this a legitimate entry considering that the CastleVania name is tacked on; an afterthought. This game wasn't even intended to be a CastleVania. In some ways, I consider this spitting in the face of 'Vania fans. Add the fact they tried to throw Kojima's golden plated name in to draw interest. Do you really think he directly has anything to do with it? I doubt it. How many of you had ever considered playing a CastleVania before this one simply because of Kojima?
Monkey at Work @ Jun 4th 2009 12:53PM
my thoughts exactly, beat me by a couple minutes!
Erluti @ Jun 4th 2009 12:22PM
Uh, he's wielding a cross. Crucifixes still have Jesus on them.
NemesiN @ Jun 5th 2009 1:00AM
How horribly wrong you are...
Erluti @ Jun 5th 2009 9:19AM
From Dictionary.com:
cru⋅ci⋅fix [kroo-suh-fiks]
–noun
1.a cross with the figure of Jesus crucified upon it.
Or did you mean Jesus was on it but I couldn't see it?
Monkey at Work @ Jun 4th 2009 12:52PM
Wow this is disappointing, I'll give Kojima Productions props for the aesthetics, but really, the only connection this looks to have with Castlevania is a whip. This looks like another Gods of War/Prince of Persia esque game.. while those are both two great games by their own rights if I wanted that I could just play those instead of some clone touted as a Castlevania game as an obvious afterthought.
I find it ironic that in order to play a current Castlevania game, instead of the 360 I have to play on my brother's Nintendo DS.
Oh and just because the Xbox platform is capable of amazing graphics doesn't mean they can't realize SoTN-esque games for it using sprites.

why did you guys (joystiq) post the old trailer? when thee's a brand new trailer out that's 10 x as good.

Where is Dracula?
Isnt he iconic for the series? Even if he got killed in everyone and keeps coming back?
Bah. I say.
Astral Drmz @ Jun 5th 2009 2:10AM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Death in more 'vanias than Dracula? Where is he?

Patrick Stewart voice over = ultimate win.
joe @ Jun 4th 2009 7:38PM
The whole tacked-on aspect does bring up memories of Star Fox Adventures. Unpleasant memories. On the other hand: Patrick Stewart. I am conflicted.
