Hands-on: Darksiders (Xbox 360. PS3)

Gallery: Darksiders
For those of you unaware, Darksiders stars War, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Vigil couldn't divulge much on the story, but we know that War is out of the picture for an indeterminate amount of time, and in returning, he finds the Earth is void of all human life. In the wake of the loss of all humankind remains a war between the forces of Hell and Heaven. And War is stuck in the middle, without his fellow Horsemen and without much aid. In fact, the guy has even lost his horse!
We were able to play several different areas of the game, where both War has his horse and before he reclaims it. Out of all of the scenarios, our favorite was actually the game's first boss fight. We battled the Queen of the Bats on top of a roof in the middle of the night, and the sheer size of this Queen of the Bats was impressive. Then, we started to get into the boss fight and it was like pure magic.
So you basically pick up these bombs laying around the rooftop, throw them at the gigantic bat and watch as they stick on her body. Then, you pull out War's massive shuryken-like projectile, target one of the lit torches, then target the bomb, and release (think Link's boomerang). That will bring her down, and then you can unload on her with your massive sword. Other notable gameplay segments included an on-rails sequence while riding on the back of a large Griffin (not of the McElroy variety) that was highly reminiscent of Panzer Dragoon, and fighting in a dilapidated street against two of these things. Those things are brutal.
Fighting all of these enemies is fun, as the combat in Darksiders works really well, and just plain feels good. You lock onto enemies with the L trigger, which causes the camera to zoom out behind War so that you get a good view of the action and enemies around him. This is great because you mostly encounter large groups of enemies, and with the camera zooming out in this way, you aren't susceptible to being attacked from blind spots. And, while locked onto enemies, you can use the RB button to dash around and dodge enemy attacks, making it incredibly easy to navigate the battlefield and feel like a total badass. The button also doubles as your counter, by the way, which is accomplished through a well-timed press upon an enemy attacking you.
Throughout our hour-long session with the game, we were constantly impressed by it. Where had this game been hiding, and why haven't we heard much about it? The important thing is that we know about it now, and we're looking forward to checking out more come January 1.

Ever since the first trailer I've been stoked for this game. Hopefully they get the marketing bandwagon behind it because this could be a juggernaut.
CH3BURASHKA @ Jun 4th 2009 9:08AM
You're right; I barely know anything about this game, except its title.
cuso26 @ Jun 4th 2009 9:15AM
Every time I've heard the name of this game (all but 3 times now), I can't help but keep thinking "Darkstalkers", which immediately brings to mind horrid and awesome visions of Morrigan cosplay.
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jun 4th 2009 9:33AM
But mostly awesome, right?
And yeah, I keep thinking the same damn thing too.
el1pulpo @ Jun 4th 2009 9:15AM
Joe Mad FTW!
Man, this game makes my hands itch with anticipation.
PN04 @ Jun 4th 2009 5:48PM
I'd almost forgotten that Madueira was designing characters for a game. it's been so long since I last saw anything about it. glad it's still coming out and that it's something we can play unlike his last 3 or 4 video game ventures that were either DOA or for some random korean company.
headkicker @ Jun 4th 2009 9:16AM
Game Informer had an article about it when it was first announced. I always thought it sounded pretty good, but now I think it will be amazing and really suprise people.
emirabal @ Jun 4th 2009 1:46PM
Also Play had a great cover story and preview of it several months back, i fell in love with it immediately, literally in love.
steven(PSN: small_hands) @ Jun 4th 2009 9:26AM
Agreed! I knew mostly nothing about this and it looks and sounds pretty impressive! It is now firmly set on my radar this should keep my hack and slash cravings at bay for a few months until GoW3 release, hopefully it wont be delayed otherwise it might suffer from competition from GoW3 which would be a really shame as this looks very interesting!
baby sea tuna @ Jun 4th 2009 9:34AM
I understand it would have fucked up your joke, but it's "gryphon" not "griffin."
JW @ Jun 4th 2009 10:16AM
Actually, it can be either gryphon or griffin... both are acceptable.
Why do people feel to urge to find faults in every place possible? It especially cracks me up when they do so without any semblance of being competent.
Awesome.
Game looks good, though. :)
aristokrat @ Jun 4th 2009 11:01AM
Hey JW, there should only be one space between the lines "Awesome." and "Game looks good, though." What were you thinking? =p
Vegnagun bwf @ Jun 4th 2009 2:14PM
@aristokrat
":p" isn't correct. Emoticons will not be accepted as proper English.
aristokrat @ Jun 4th 2009 3:31PM
Fine. I am sticking my tongue out at you in a humorous fashion. Fixed.
That should be new thing: really detailed descriptions of what action best conveys your intentions. I have pulled down my pants, turned out, and pointed my ass cheeks at you in a rebutting manner.
*bonus points for puns!*
TheCoats @ Jun 4th 2009 9:48AM
first time i am hearing of this game....looks great but do you think it might become repetitive? or was it just plain awesome?
David Hinkle @ Jun 4th 2009 11:43AM
Seriously, it was plain awesome.
Temidien @ Jun 4th 2009 9:49AM
Looks like the love-child of Devil May Cry and Warcraft and that ain't a bad thing.
This is the first I'm hearing of this and it looks AMAZING. Will wait for a few reviews before picking it up, but if it plays as well as it looks, consider it a Day 1 for me.
Storm Eagle @ Jun 4th 2009 9:54AM
I saw this game for the first time in a GameInformer months ago and ever since then, I've been on the lookout for any info on this game. It looks like it's coming along very very nicely and I'll definitely be picking this up on release day.
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Jun 4th 2009 10:08AM
Agreed, this game looks better everytime I see it!
KilgoreTrout XL @ Jun 4th 2009 10:12AM
I was hoping for something along the lines of BG: Dark Alliance. But that was still pretty cool.
Alex @ Jun 4th 2009 10:45AM
I opened this page, saw that image and immediately thought: This is going to be horrendous.
Drew -- PS360: uphillbothways @ Jun 4th 2009 11:10AM
Ummm... image link to "one of these things" doesn't work for me. Anyone else?
David Hinkle @ Jun 4th 2009 11:46AM
It's been fixed, thanks! It was pretty late last night when I wrote this up. :)
Drew -- PS360: uphillbothways @ Jun 4th 2009 11:49AM
Thank you, Sir David.
ryan @ Jun 4th 2009 12:20PM
Will I get downvoted for saying that this looks more exciting to me than God of War 3?
Jonathan @ Jun 4th 2009 11:48AM
I've been looking forward to this game since I read about it in Game Informer's August 2007, yes '07, preview.
Letters2Kay @ Jun 4th 2009 12:00PM
As soon as I heard Joe Maduereira was making a game, I was all about Darksiders. He's an amazing artist and his Battle Chasers is one of my favorite comic series of this decade. His concept art was amazing and the game looks as though it's actually able to do it justice. The concept is just as amazing and even if this game were still under everyone's radar, I'd still be all about it- but I'm glad it's getting some more attention. I'd love to see what Joey Mad! comes out with next...
Now if only Vigil games would pick up the rights to Tim Vigil & David Quinn's comic masterpiece Faust, I'd straight up fuck these guys. If anyone else is familiar with this book, you know what an awesome, gory game that could be. M rating to the extreme...
Stix Remix @ Jun 4th 2009 12:26PM
Now this is how developers should include Biblical allusions.
mikenapoli87 @ Jun 4th 2009 12:42PM
Wow. Joe mad has some nerve. He left battle chasers without finishing it, and now he expects people to jump onboard to this game. For any one that doesnt know Battle Chasers currently has 9 of its 10 issues released and its been a few years since issue 9. Joe mad really let a lot of people down. dont get me wrong, i love his art but imo("opinion!") he has no respect for his fans.
PN04 @ Jun 4th 2009 5:56PM
To be fair he hah every intention of finishing BC. but between his video game company tanking and having a contractual dispute with Wildstorm who actually owned his book it forced him to go elsewhere, that's why he ended up doing stuff for marvel again (marvel Ultimates) rather than his own book.
harvsorrow @ Jun 4th 2009 1:11PM
Why does hell hate War?
Yet another goodie for 2010 (albeit EARLY 2010)
Vegnagun bwf @ Jun 4th 2009 2:11PM
SUPER early.
Patrick @ Jun 4th 2009 1:20PM
Played this at the Leipzig convention in 2008, and thought it was pretty decent, but nothing mindblowing. Hopefully they've improved upon it
Max @ Jun 4th 2009 3:07PM
Does anyone else think the character design/armour is really inspired by World of Warcraft?
Thief @ Jun 4th 2009 3:14PM
Does anyone else think the character design from World of Warcrafts four horsemen were inspired by some other lore?
...oh, you were talkin about Arthas. Yeah, totally the same gear =D
PN04 @ Jun 4th 2009 5:47PM
Madueira has be influenced by anime and video games for years, just look at his stints in Xmen and Battle Chasers and you'll see Darkstalkers characters Final Fantasy characters, even Fatal Fury characters so WOW stuff is hardly a surprise.
Orion @ Jun 4th 2009 1:48PM
I can't believe that because of this article and video it's gone from a game I didn't even bother to know anything about, to a game I wish was out tomorrow for a day one purchase.
Wow..just wow. VERY impressed, and the gameplay sounds like EXACTLY what I want.
Vegnagun bwf @ Jun 4th 2009 2:11PM
I remember seeing something in Gameinformer about Darksiders a long time ago and it looked pretty exciting. I'm glad that it's shaping up into a good game and I look forward to buying it January 1st. :3
Saria the Cat @ Jun 4th 2009 2:11PM
The concept is what really grabs me. Apocalypse mythos? Yes please!
Bitter Kevin @ Jun 4th 2009 2:27PM
This game looks legendary but it seriously needs a name change. Every time I see "Darksiders" I have to think to myself, is that the badass game with War vs Heaven & Hell? Call it The Horseman or Dark Rider or something! Bad marketing could kill this game's sales!
Thief @ Jun 4th 2009 3:13PM
This game is going to work with both 360 and PS3's new motion cameras....
YOU DO THESE ACTIONS WITH YOUR BODY!
theoreticallyme @ Jun 4th 2009 4:34PM
wrong.
thanks for playing...
Johnny, tell him what he could have won!!
Sega Uranus @ Jun 4th 2009 4:06PM
I've been pumped for this for quite some time. I will probably get downvoted, but I think this looks better than Bayonetta and God of War III by far.
Rop @ Jun 4th 2009 4:51PM
Actually, this game - to me, anyway - is so much more akin to the likes of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver series. Through out the video all I could think of was that game and the series... seriously.
Just beefed up, but with heaps more promise and variety.
