Hands-on: Joy Ride
Gallery: Joy Ride
Joy Ride reminds us of the Rush series. |
We also participated in a race mode that took place on a more linear track. The track -- again, like the Rush series -- had lots of shortcuts open to those with sharp eyes and good reflexes. Right now, there aren't any combat items or power-ups like you would find in a typical kart racer, so winning will depend on your ability to navigate corners and spot shortcuts. Again though, Joy Ride is still in pre-alpha. There's a lot of play testing left to be done, so combat items could make it into the game if BigPark decides it adds to the experience.
Graphically, the game is perfectly adequate, especially for a downloadable title. It's colorful and there are lots of customization options for the vehicles. Combine these options with Avatar support and it's unlikely you'll encounter another identical player. This gives the game a very personal touch and is pretty far removed from the licensed characters seen in similar racers.

There is still an unknown hanging in the air though, and that's how much all these customization options are going to cost. Joy Ride itself will be free, and BigPark assured us that players will still have plenty of options included with the base game, but we know that there will modifications for the vehicles that will come at a price. BigPark isn't sure about how the game will be monetized, but it's something to think about. While there will be premium tracks for download, it's important to note that if only one person in a group has payed for a premium track, all of the players in the group can still race on it, which is a nice touch.
All in all, we're sure that the combining the addictive qualities of Rush with microtransactions was a very attractive proposition for Microsoft, but the important thing is that the Joy Ride is actually fun to play. Even if you never pay for a single hubcap or spoiler or track, there's a fun, free game underneath. It's hard to argue with that.

I caught a Beetle Adventure Racing sorta vibe from that trailer, at least for a few seconds of it. Which is a good thing. A very, very good thing.
Dafrety @ Jun 4th 2009 10:44PM
Oh my god. That's the game! I remember it from when I was little, a friend had a N64 with that game. I had completely forgot the name of it but it was so fun! I've been looking for it for a long time but that was it. Thanks!
Omega2k3 @ Jun 5th 2009 6:44PM
I don't know, I was reminded far more of TrackMania than anything else.
Arctrick @ Jun 6th 2009 1:25PM
@Dafrety
YES!!! I had the EXACT same problem as you. I played this at a friend's house when I was little and loved. Thanks Fun DMC... now if only I could figure out where to buy it...
Sizer @ Jun 4th 2009 8:37PM
This looks pretty good for a free title. You could do worse than blatantly borrowing from SSX and Stunt Driver. I might even forgive them for that Yaris thing.
mars @ Jun 4th 2009 8:42PM
I just hope that you can't "buy" first place. I mean it would just be unfair if you could buy performance modifications or powerups (if they decide to add them) that make the playing field un-level
james @ Jun 4th 2009 9:35PM
i think all the cars you buy are merely aesthetic upgrades. a game like this seems like all the cars need to be pretty much equal.
cuteSAVAGE @ Jun 4th 2009 8:45PM
I was excited when I first saw this, lost it all when ModNation was shown. This write-up has brought back some of my initial interest, but it's going to be hard to compete with fully customizable... even if the price tag says free.
whaleshark @ Jun 4th 2009 9:15PM
I agree. ModNation Racers looks awesome.
But this is free, so they both have their pluses.
And also, I hope that this is ALL free. Like no buy able addons, or any of that stuff.
whaleshark @ Jun 4th 2009 9:16PM
"it's important to note that if only one person in a group has payed for a premium track, all of the players in the group can still race on it, which is a nice touch."
Now THAT is what I am talking about. That's a great idea.
Ezio Auditore de Firenze [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 4th 2009 9:29PM
yeah, modnation looks better so far.
Roofie @ Jun 4th 2009 9:37PM
It's pretty tough to compare this with ModNation when one is a full retail release and the other is just a free title meant for casual fun. I understand that they seem fairly similar with the arcade racing aspect, but it's like comparing Small Arms with Smash Bros.
cuteSAVAGE @ Jun 5th 2009 2:20AM
I guess that explains a lot. I didn't realize ModNation was a retail game. Apples and Oranges it is then. I'll more than likely enjoy both, but I'll only stick with whichever offers four player local split-screen. Right now it seems Joy Ride only has two player local play :(
klitorisaurus @ Jun 5th 2009 2:32AM
As a PS3 owner I'll totally trade you guys ModNation for this... I love stunt based racing games and from what I could see in the video, ModNation was more about racing, less about stunts.
chrisnick @ Jun 4th 2009 8:49PM
honest to god question from a person who doesn't use these things........ARE AVATARS USEFUL FOR ANYTHING GOOD WHEN THEY'RE THAT SIZE?
norm @ Jun 4th 2009 9:09PM
looks exactly like trackmania, plus avatars.
klitorisaurus @ Jun 5th 2009 2:08AM
Thats exactly where I was going! TrackMania is such an awesome series and would be perfectly playable on consoles.... Is that series underrated or am I just hanging with the wrong crowd?
Gibbeynater @ Jun 4th 2009 9:09PM
The artwork gives me Wile E. Coyote flashbacks. Please tell me that the Roadrunner will be playable.
finnith @ Jun 4th 2009 9:12PM
I'm happy that somebody else felt got that vibe, Looney Toons was great back in the day.
Phour ZwanZig @ Jun 4th 2009 10:08PM
I agree.. It sure looks like the worlds inspiration was RoadRunner & Wile E Coyote.. I was waiting for the Roadrunner to show in the trailer.. Oh Well..
Are we gunna get Acme power-ups.. Cuz it would be nice, but Id be afraid to use them..
finnith @ Jun 4th 2009 10:23PM
A rock will fall on you. Or you'll fall off a cliff. Or both.
koolin @ Jun 4th 2009 9:30PM
Needs a track editor, maybe a purchase addon...
jynxce @ Jun 4th 2009 9:32PM
Thanks for the followup right up, Joystiq. We all know if it's not some title by Jaffe on PSN, this game would get no coverage. Nice to know that some sites cover the games and not what console their on.
rolf @ Jun 4th 2009 10:28PM
LOL, An All New Avatar Adventure....
like there has been any OLD Avatar Adventures?
Still, looks fun!
Snowblind @ Jun 5th 2009 5:33AM
Kingdom for Keflings, which is actually very good.
um.. I also believe you can use them in Bomberman?
Tann @ Jun 5th 2009 2:20AM
Is there a track maker?
That would be cool :)
Snowblind @ Jun 5th 2009 5:32AM
Surprised this actually plays well, since it's free I'll definitely give it a shot though. A track editor would be really awesome, even if you have to purchase it. It's the only thing that looked at all appealing about ModNation to me.
sonic the plumber @ Jun 5th 2009 5:35AM
"like there has been any OLD Avatar Adventures?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Kingdom of Keflings was great, but as you say, we've hardly had reason to use the avatars.
I'm really looking forward to this, as I like the avatars and wish there were more uses for them in full games. Online GTA with your avatar would be very cool.
Phizzy @ Jun 5th 2009 4:38PM
I'm sorry, I think you're confusing 'cool' with 'fucking stupid'.
BIacked Out @ Aug 10th 2009 6:59AM
Yeah Avatars need more mediums to work with, but I can see that increasing as time goes on.
Maybe not as far as GTA, but we do need some leisure games for the avatars, like bowling or golf (which is being done) and other sports that arent actually sports.
umm....hello??? @ Jun 5th 2009 11:14AM
looks like fun--am definitely getting this. ; )
Forsakyn @ Jun 5th 2009 1:10PM
It's all fun and games until Rusty Nail shows up. And he will.
rolf @ Jun 6th 2009 12:06PM
OH YEA, I had forgotten about them
Good call.
Nick @ Jun 6th 2009 11:31AM
I like the TF2 art style. :D
stormtrooper190 PSN= (im not telling you that) @ Jun 7th 2009 10:24AM
modnation will own this
BIacked Out @ Aug 18th 2009 4:17PM
How u gnna compare a retail game to a free game? I agree Modnation looks great, but will not do very good/ or atleast not as good as LBP, nowhere near as much hype.
Diego_18 @ Aug 3rd 2009 8:21PM
Where can i download this game???? I have just bougth my xbox,,, and i loved this game!!!!
BIacked Out @ Aug 10th 2009 6:53AM
