Metal Gear Solid coming to PSN June 18
Jack Tretton wasn't lying when he said we'd be seeing a lot more PS1 releases over in the West. Konami has announced that the original Metal Gear Solid will finally be heading to the PlayStation Store in America -- and pretty soon, too. You'll be able to replay Solid Snake's original adventure on June 18 and, similar to previous high-profile PS1 releases, will cost $9.99.As for Europe? No word, yet. Normally, we'd say there's no chance of both the US and Europe getting the same PS1 titles around the same time, but we just heard that Final Fantasy VII is coming to Europe too, so you never know.

"

Now theres a surprise.
(im not blaming Joystiq im blaming SCEE"
dblakenz @ Jun 5th 2009 4:10AM
I live in New Zealand and were put in the "European" region even though were about as far from europe as you could possably get! Is annoying. America is closer to Europe than we are!
On the plus side I do have an origional 60gig that plays my PS1 and PS2 Metal Gears fine :) But It would be nice to have more PS1 game to d/l and bring back the memories of 10 years ago! The Japanese Store has plenty so it can't be that hard to do!

"Jack Tretton wasn't lying when he said we'd be seeing a lot more PS1 releases over in the West."
One game is "a lot more"?
Compared to the offerings on Japan's PSN, yeah, I suppose it is.
Banman @ Jun 4th 2009 1:52PM
Why are you questioning yourself?
Engerz @ Jun 4th 2009 1:55PM
Dude, we're getting them within this year.
What? done with Final Fantasy 7 already?
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Jun 4th 2009 1:57PM
There have been a lot of PS1 games added in the last month alone.
waves @ Jun 4th 2009 2:09PM
Yeah maybe it's picking up now, but they should have started a long time ago (like MS and Nintendo did). Over the holidays I got a chance to see how many PS1 games are on the Japanese store, and it's shocking. I don't want to play FFVII again. I'm more interested in playing some of the more obscure games, but that's only going to be possible after they've built out a much larger library.
Also... Bushido Blade plz...
Eric E @ Jun 4th 2009 2:28PM
@waves
Bushido Blade 2 you mean (much better). Still have my copy as i said not too long ago down there VV
Great Game.
abelpc @ Jun 4th 2009 1:51PM
Open the flood gates.. Lets see Tons more!
Michelobius @ Jun 4th 2009 1:51PM
I just wish I could digitize my current versions of my PS1 games. I already bought MGS and FF7 10 years ago.
Eric E @ Jun 4th 2009 2:01PM
You CAN! through remote play but its not perfect (works fine for RPG's but not when you need fast reaction time)
OR BETTER YET! you can rip a PS1 game, and put it on your psp yourself if you homebrew/hack it.
Michelobius @ Jun 4th 2009 2:05PM
I don't have a PSP.. I really should get one, but I was referring to the ability to play the games without swapping discs. Then I could just box my PS1 titles and transfer them all to my hard drive.
Eric E @ Jun 4th 2009 2:16PM
I prefer the 2000 to 3000 and you might get it cheaper. Just look into the differences (not much) before you decide.
batithumann @ Jun 4th 2009 2:34PM
You can! But it costs $9.99
R. Salas @ Jun 4th 2009 1:53PM
im going to buy a psp so i can play MGS and FFVII on it.
Brian @ Jun 4th 2009 1:56PM
Anyone else wondering how the Psycho Mantis boss fight would work on the PSP?
|MaguS| @ Jun 4th 2009 1:58PM
You can shoot the statues on the side also, but in the options I believe it has an option to swap ports...
DangerMouse @ Jun 4th 2009 1:58PM
You can change the controller ports in the PSP menu during the game.
NaeemTHM @ Jun 4th 2009 2:21PM
You have to switch to a DS.
Alex McKee @ Jun 4th 2009 2:36PM
The DS has multiple controllers? And a PS1 emulator? I was not informed.
Billop @ Jun 4th 2009 4:06PM
Yeah been a while since i played MGS on PSP, but you could swap ports. Just Press HOME and click "settings" then "Change controller ports"
Engerz @ Jun 4th 2009 1:57PM
Oh man, oh man. Looks like I'll be buying myself a bigger card to fit FF7 and now this. Can't wait!
Eric E @ Jun 4th 2009 1:57PM
This would be great if i didn't already beat all my old PS1 Favorites during the dry spells of the PS3.
I still have my MGS (2 copies actuallly, best MGS game) and my FFVII + IX (9 is better) and my Castlevania:SOTN (best game ever) and Marvel vs Capcom and Bushido Blade 2 (not on PSN yet but it should be)
This is why you hold onto good games, dont fall for gamestops crap, these games are worth 10x what i paid now.
Thats right kids, hold onto your copy of Lair!
Michelobius @ Jun 4th 2009 2:08PM
I've always been a proponent of keeping my games. Part of me is a bit of a packrat, I suppose, but I can never definitively say "I'll never play that game again," especially when they're as great as MGS and FF.
I dunno about Lair though.
Levi @ Jun 4th 2009 2:46PM
I thought I was the only one that liked the first Solid title the best.
mattimus @ Jun 4th 2009 4:01PM
"FFVII + IX (9 is better)"
Yes. FFIX is the game i really want to see on PSN. FFVII is a nice placeholder til then.
Quattro @ Jun 4th 2009 6:21PM
9 is better. Just picked myself up a brand new copy.
Banman @ Jun 4th 2009 1:57PM
My question is how well will these games translate to the PSP. Doesn't it only have 6 buttons?
Eric E @ Jun 4th 2009 1:59PM
you can pick ad adjusted layout, common theme is to hold select like a Shift key to make L1 and R1 into L2 and R2.
You need to make it a little different depending on the game.
I already beat MGS1 on my PS3 and used PSP to remote play some of it. I forgot what scheme i used b/c select is the codec button...
David Black @ Jun 4th 2009 2:00PM
It has the same number of buttons as the original PSone controller.
Eric E @ Jun 4th 2009 2:08PM
@davidblack
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PS1All3ControllersTopButtons.jpg
You might be thinking of SNES....
even still MGS uses L2 and R2 to bring up the menu (items w/ L2, weapons with R2)
DangerMouse @ Jun 4th 2009 2:13PM
you can also choose to make the analog stick's left and right movements act as R1 & L1 or R2 & L2. There's a few different options, too.
Doombot (zuburi) @ Jun 4th 2009 2:15PM
I thought they always had it so left on the analogue=L2 and right on the analogue=R2.
Patrick @ Jun 4th 2009 1:57PM
Already got it on disk, but it's great to see it finally on the store!
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 4th 2009 1:57PM
Niiiiiice....now people who dont have "The Essentials" Collection can play this....
I might pick it up so I can play in on my PSP without using remote play...
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Jun 4th 2009 1:58PM
I already have the MGS collection with this included but I might repurchase it to play it on the PSP. I guess it just depends how the controls are remapped.
roger @ Jun 4th 2009 1:59PM
I just bought a GC so I can play the twin snakes version for this as well as the REmake.
Kdiggy @ Jun 5th 2009 8:40AM
both great games.
|MaguS| @ Jun 4th 2009 1:59PM
MGS isn't Solid Snakes original adventure...
koehler83 @ Jun 4th 2009 2:03PM
+1 to you sir.
It's not even his second adventure.
Cosmo @ Jun 4th 2009 2:03PM
Well it is in 3D.
Temidien @ Jun 4th 2009 2:06PM
Thank jeebus I'm not the only one who caught that, I was THIS close to burning down the internets.
DangerMouse @ Jun 4th 2009 2:06PM
PS1 games on the PS3/PSP are great. Full manual scans, screen options, and the ability to transfer save files between the two systems are an added bonus. They need more of them, and i would also like to see some older consoles (genesis, for example) emulated the same way.
I already have two copies of this game, so i'll pass. Now just waiting on Capcom to start putting their classics out.
dudes113 @ Jun 4th 2009 2:09PM
Considering FFVII was 1.3 GB, any guess on how big this one would be? I need to decide between buying a 4 GB or a 2 GB card.
Eric E @ Jun 4th 2009 2:24PM
well thats 3 discs, and this is 2. (and also FFVII has a lot of repeating data so you can visit the same town on all 3 discs)
b/c 2 CD's(.7gb each) should almost be able to hold 1.3gb that FFVII was.
so its hard to tell because i guarantee every disc wasn't full they just had to find good times to stop it.
MGS HOWEVER seperates the game sections pretty much into 2 cds but the still need to copy the textures, scripts, sounds and code from the first cd into the 2nd.
I am going to guess about a gb should be safe but most likely under a GB.
Billop @ Jun 4th 2009 4:08PM
I have a Multidisc eboot (Both discs in 1 game) and its roughly 900mb.
coffins outside the door @ Jun 4th 2009 2:09PM
Holy shit! Awesome, awesome news.
tteppic @ Jun 4th 2009 2:10PM
MGS was a fantastic game, but i think i can speak for everyone when i say ''this and FF VII are two titles i think everybody will have in their libary on disk already'' therefore, as great games as they are, the chance of them being downloaded are a little slim compared to some other titles. people dont sell copies of games they love. i can honestly say i still have MGS and FF VII so i wont be downloading either, but its nice to see them come to the store for the people who missed them or were born a generation later or some simmilar lark!
squallgengar @ Jun 4th 2009 8:06PM
They sell them if they own the black label versions and wanna make about $60. Then they buy the digital copy, still own the game, and are up $50. The only way I'd take a physical copy over a digital is if the physical copy was a special edition and had bonus stuff.
Snowblind @ Jun 4th 2009 2:12PM
I want to see FF9. I already own copies of most big PSOne games, but I have three copies of FF9 and they all seem to lock up in various places.. Don't know if anyone else has that problem.
