Seen@E3: Infinity Ward accepts Call of Duty 4 Guinness record

Activision's booth yesterday played host to more than just sweaty gamers and DJ Hero videos: Call of Duty 4-developer Infinity Ward was rewarded with a Guinness World Record for "the most popular online console game" citing the fact that it's been played "been played by over 13 million gamers on Xbox Live since its launch in November 2007." So, you mean to tell us that CoD4 took that honor without even including the PlayStation Network community? Dayum! Pic of that certificate after the break. Congrats, IW!

Damn! That's pretty much half the 360 userbase! But, will Infinity Ward pull the plug on COD4 online when Modern Warfare 2 comes out?
tobz1000 @ Jun 4th 2009 2:45AM
Of course.
Ezio Auditore de Firenze [PSN SniperChameleon] @ Jun 4th 2009 3:50AM
nah. they've pretty much already stopped updating it and left it to fend for itself.

errr halo 3 anyone?
ThatPCgameryouhate @ Jun 4th 2009 3:15AM
Halo 3 is very close. I think it has 10 million sold copies, where as COD 4 has sold ~7.5 million (http://www.vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=7316) on the 360, and Halo 3 has sold ~10 million (http://www.vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=6964). So, either a lot of gamers rented or shared COD 4, or I don't know what's going on. I thought that Halo had a larger online base.
B @ Jun 4th 2009 4:11AM
Doesn't matter how much it sold, just how many logged in online at one point in time. Rentals/Used Games/Borrowed-from-a-friend probably accounts for a large majority of that.
Bobby S. @ Jun 4th 2009 10:12AM
^ Well Halo 3 has been topping CoD4 online activity for quite some time now. CoD4 surpassed it only a few times according to Major Nelson.
XGM @ Jun 4th 2009 10:26AM
I know the record is not accounting for it, but there is also tons of PS3 and PC copies out there.
arrness @ Jun 4th 2009 2:42AM
i felt that... if there is any time where those words are appropriate, it is now.
Opportunities.

"Close to 15 million people have played Halo 3" (as of 3 months ago).
Does not compute?
Churchy @ Jun 4th 2009 3:02AM
Guiness employees are on their way now to destroy any records stating the facts you just cited, when you wake up in the morning it will be like no one at all ever played Halo 3.
B @ Jun 4th 2009 4:14AM
That just says it's been played by 15million people, not played on Xbox Live like this article.
sonicspike41 @ Jun 4th 2009 4:22AM
@B
"According to the data we receive from Xbox LIVE:
* Close to 15 million people have played Halo 3, Launch-to-Date."
Premature ejaculation man @ Jun 4th 2009 4:33AM
But that's how Bungie would get their stats no?
Jeremy White @ Jun 4th 2009 2:53AM
Yes, it is.
OmegaVader @ Jun 4th 2009 2:57AM
I remember finding the Guiness Records book fascinating as a kid.
Then I grew up. What a farce the whole thing is!
gamer1 @ Jun 4th 2009 3:02AM
How is this posible when Halo 3 had sold more copies than COD4 and is usually at the top of the LIVE Activity charts for Xbox 360 Live Titles? I think COD4 is a great game and their certificate is commendable for its milestone, but somewhere someone is not crunching numbers correctly, or that someone doesn't care.
NeilNaS @ Jun 4th 2009 5:30AM
Halo 3 might have sold more, doesn't mean people played it!
Rop @ Jun 4th 2009 3:31AM
Damn! I'm the only idiot who hasn't got this game. I've been meaning to get it for a while now, but the expensive price point, at the time, was a deterrent.
I also got given COD 5 as a pressie instead of COD 4, so that played a role in me not going for COD 4 as well. Anyway, I really should pick it up, seeing as it's now more than half the price it was selling for originally.
Infinity Ward really deserves this recognition!!
NeilNaS @ Jun 4th 2009 5:29AM
Cod5 as a present? Must've sucked.. quit flossing with Treyarch's shit rope and start thinking about acquiring the most played xbox live game!
Rop @ Jun 4th 2009 6:09AM
Yeah, it sucked big time, alright... I was so disappointed, but didn't want to disappoint friends.
See, they figured that 5 was newer and therefore better than 4, so they opted for the newer version, thinking I'd want the latest release.
I'll take your advice though, and pick it up sometime this week when I get the chance. Hoorah to late night shopping, hey? :D
HazyCloud @ Jun 4th 2009 9:50AM
@ Rop Make sure you gran the GOTY edition if you are wanting to play online. It includes a token for the map pack they released.
Rop @ Jun 4th 2009 4:12PM
Oh yeah, didn't think of that, thanks, Hazy Cloud! Appreciated, mate!
xtremeholymuffin @ Jun 4th 2009 3:47AM

And what about the millions on PC? That's gotta be more than the PS3. Hell, people still play CoD1 and United Offensive!
